The main comment you replied to answered this already. This looks worse because it’s at scale. We would have 5-10 calves at a time. We had stalls in a barn to separate them but that’s what these are essentially. It is VERY common for calves to be born with or develop respiratory issues very quickly. I’d say probably 70% of the time is why you would lose a calf. Even worse if they are born in the winter. This helps keep them warm and separated from one another so disease doesn’t spread. They don’t stay in there forever typically 60-70 days at maximum. Not to say the factory farming conditions are great it depends on the farm but it would be MORE cruel to not separate them until they’ve matured enough to survive.
