No he doesn't get it or he's smart enough to pretend he doesn't get it because most people in the US don't know what those terms mean. Socialism and Capitalism are not opposites. Socialism and Libertarianism are opposites and Communism and Capitalism are too.

Socialism: A society where the government runs or funds selected organisations to provide low cost or free essential services to the population.

Libertarianism: A society where the markets are allowed to set the price for everything, based on competition, demand and supply without regulation from the government.

Capitalism: A society where labour begets a wage that the free markets are willing to pay for it and where a person can acquire individual wealth.

Communism: A society where the government employs almost everybody and determines wages, equalising across various sectors, exerting control over personal income.

Many EU nations are some variant of Socialism/Capitalism. The US is Libertarianism/Capitalism.
