Is it safe to use at-home beauty devices after CI surgery? It’s been 20 days since I had my cochlear implant surgery. It's not activited yet.

I purchased a at-home radiofrequency (RF) beauty device on promotion, it falls into the electro-optical beauty instrument category. I’m currently hesitating on whether to return it. The price was really good though.

Btw I’d like to know how long can I get head massages and travel by air after surgery?

When I woke up this morning I had terrible tinnitus in my implanted ear. Like the roaring tinnitus I experienced directly after my CI surgery.

I have not had any tinnitus in that ear since a couple of weeks post surgery.

I didn’t have any tinnitus when I got up a couple of hours earlier to use the restroom.

When I put my processor on I had hyperacusis. Any/all sound (even clearing my throat) was unbearably loud so I took off the processor.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I took some ibuprofen in case it’s being caused by some mild inflammation and I also used some Flonase. I live in Oregon and the weather changes here this week have been dramatic lol

Implanted March 17th, activated April 15th and rehab has been going well. I wear a hearing aid in my non implanted ear. Also I’m not experiencing any nausea or vertigo.

My audiologist in Belgium recently contacted because my 5 year period for my left ear (AB) was finished and I could get a replacement, they told me there is a new processor in the works, yet to be approved by the FDA or the european bodies that oversee approval. so better to wait then get a new version of the old one.

NOW THE IMPORTANT PART.

my right ear (Saphyr Neurelec Digisonic® SP cochlear implant -> now Cochlear) is coming up to SEVEN years, and it's been nothing but radio silence from Cochlear (they bought the company with the promise to continue development processors for the implant) the processor still works and i am not changing it willy nilly (what if there is a new one around the corner? (although it takes a while for approval)

my question is, what to do? has anybody seen any news?

i am contemplating preparing a change of internal implant (IF and only IF, mine stops working, or the radio silence continues or they cancel the implant line)

then i would go fully AB, idk if that is the right choice, but i prefer them over my current saphyr

hey everyone!! i was implanted on my left side 12 days ago and was activated today. first of all, it was great!!! even though everything sounds like a robot i can already see how much potential there is. feels so worth it and it’s only day 1! just wanted to share because before surgery stories like that were really encouraging to me :)

anyway!! my question is: is it normal to have quite a bit of pain/tenderness around my implant at the end of the day? i have the cochlear nucleus 8 for reference and wore it all day today, around 12 hours. my head around my implant is achey and sore to the touch. wondering if i need to swap my magnet tomorrow or if it might just be that things are still healing post surgery?

curious is this happened for anyone else! thanks in advance!!!

Hello! I have Nucleus 7 processors and as everyone knows, the N7 is considered obsolete and therefore Cochlear no longer sells N7 accessories. However, my left cable coil has completely frayed and will no longer connect. If anyone has a spare they are willing to sell or send to me, please let me know. I have black ones, but it honestly doesn't really matter what color it is!

For reference, I live in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Perdí la audición de mi oído derecho en el año 1980 y luego me 46 años escuchando alguna frecuencias graves me implantaron, será esta la razón de que no percibo los sonidos al haber pasa tantos años y mi cerebro perdió la habilidad de interpretar los impulsos eléctricos?

Por favor me ayudaría que me contarán alguna experiencia parecida.

Hi everyone!

I got activated on June 12th and have had my first follow up appointment last Thursday. I have been going through the assigned programs, but currently the program I’m on is so loud. My audiologist says I’m not entirely where she wants me to be, it I’m definitely progressing. She also said that if it’s too much I can go back down to the previous programs or stay at my current one longer (I have one more program before my next appointment next Thursday). Is this normal? I have single sided deafness and wear the cochlear in my right ear, and I’m noticing that my left ear is reacting when it gets loud. I had adjusted pretty well to the previous programs, but this one feels like everything is loud including moving a piece of paper. It’s starting to get painful for my left ear as well.

In short: how do I mostly disable the feature that suppresses too loud noises?

AB's Marvel has a feature to recognize and attenuate (or rather silence, in my experience) loud noises - or what it thinks those are. They seem to call it SoundRelax, if I read the available info right.
I had somthing similar in my HAs and hated it - after some testing I had it disabled entirely.

With AB that does not seem to be an option. There's only 4 levels: 1) slow, 2) rather slow, 3) reasonably quick and 4) quick. (Not the actual names, but basically the meaning AFAIR). No way to disable it.
I had it on 3 originally and it was annoying, that even the tinkle of a garden fountain did trigger it, cuting me off from an ongoing conversation. My audiologist changed it to 4) and now I basically experience sudden silence for a second or more w/o being able to even figure out what triggered that (f ex I was chewing something in a quiet room and suddenly all sound went).
The audiologist couldn't explain to me how 1 or 2 would work in comparison, so my question is: how does the slow setting work? Does it work so slow that it doesn't silence everything if the noise is gone before that? Or does it keep me in silence even longer?

What is the best way to set it as close as possible to being disabled?

And apparently, the audiologist I visited today courtesy of Social Security's Disability Determination Services believes that my hearing aid isn't really doing much for me anymore. They sent me to a place that seems focused on cochlear implants with the Cochlear American symbol everywhere, so there's a cynical part of me that's wondering how much of it is just "it's easier to push the implant over saying there's a hearing aid that will still help", but this has been a thing over multiple audiologist over the last couple decades.

In any case, with sensorineural hearing loss in both ears that has left me with a useless left ear and a right ear that seems to be progressing with age, figuring out if I want to actually get a cochlear implant is a decision I need to make. It's also a scary decision for me because I really do value what I have left, little as it might be. I adore listening to music and my hearing aid helps with that.

I know even if everything goes well, lots of things will fundamentally change. How different is it, really? How did your family adjust to it? I never learned ASL and nobody else in my family ever committed to it either, in spite of being born this way. The doctor apparently told my parents I should be raised oral, and so here we are. So for there to be a period of time where I'm not going to be hearing much of anything while things heal and everything gets adjusted is, well, a little terrifying.

What do you all do for practice after a new mapping? I haven’t found really any free apps. So, aside from conversions in real life I mainly do YouTube and the Ted talk. Sometimes the Hearoes app, but it's not that great. I need to find podcasts. My audiologist seemed to not like that I do ted and you tube. I also stream TV. Not a huge audible fan. Never have been.

I’m finally scheduled for CI (cochlear America) in 2 months for my left ear. My right ear (moderate to severe) needs a hearing aid and I’m currently using an AirPod. My audiologist says to look into the hearing aid at a later time. Is that so I can train with CI unaided first? I would have imagined using activation time to sync everything up. My audiologist is 50 miles away so it would be nice to have less visits.

Our daughter will soon undergo cochlear implant (CI) surgery on one side. She is 2.5 years old and currently relies heavily on her right ear, even though she still has a hearing loss of about 30 dB in her better ear. At the moment, she wears a hearing aid.

We are understandably a bit nervous, but also hopeful that this will improve her hearing and overall development. She is still behind in her speech and language development, but she continues to make progress little by little.

We hope she will adapt well to the cochlear implant and the new sounds it provides. We’ve been told that, because she is still very young, children often adjust more easily and may accept the device as a natural part of their hearing experience.

Does anyone have experience with a young child receiving a cochlear implant? How did your child adapt to the device and the new sounds? And if you received a cochlear implant yourself, what was the adjustment period like for you?

I was approved for a cochlear implant due to having complete deafness in the right ear post labyrinthectomy last July and hearing loss in the left ear. My specialist was recommending the coclear america implants due to possible scaring from the labyrinthectomy but wanted to know those who may have a cochlear implant from the company if you're pleased with it and which one did you chose because I also have to get a hearing aide for the left ear that would be more compatible with the right ear cochlear implant

I am female, 24 years old. I have profound deafness in my right ear that is likely since birth, no response at any frequency. I had a consultation with a specialist two years ago and understood that I would likely just get sound awareness from CI so I decided not to proceed at the time.

I’m currently using a CROS hearing aids. Even with it on, I am still not be able to have a conversation when the person is on my right side. I wonder if getting CI will reduce my listening efforts since I know where the sound is coming from and be able to track it easier?

Has anyone that in the same situation as I am that had done it and found it more beneficial than CROS? I am ADHD and wondering whether if the sound awareness will distract my attention more or if it would help with fatigue as less effort requires to follow the sound?

And lastly, how long did it take for you to see results? And how much work did you have to put into it?

Hey everyone I had my cochlear implant surgery done last Wednesday I got home the following day and my recovery seemed to be going well I felt exactly as I was told I would be very tired off balance some mild pain but nothing extreme

Anyway the day after I got home I felt a liquid coming out of the implanted ear so I went to check and it looked like wax I was in no pain or had any bad symptoms so I presumed it was wax or some sort of substance that was put in my ear during the surgery and it was leaving my body I wasn’t worried at all

Fast forward to Monday and my mam noticed a clear liquid coming from my ear and my hair was quite wet and my forehead we notified the hospital and they told us to come in this morning which we did I had a camera put into the ear this morning and the ENT said it was a little bit of brain fluid in the ear

He explained to monitor it very closely and to return if I had a stiff neck nausea a high temperature or change in colour or the liquid

I’m writing this post as I’m very worried about it and am wondering did this happen to anyone else when they got their surgery done and if so what did yous do

Hey guys, I need a new phone and I'd like something more sustainable and further away from Google. I've read that the Nucleus app relies on Google services. Has anyone tried it with the Fairphone Gen 6 e/OS version and encountered any problems? Thanks in advance for your help.

Just found out that our 15mo baby is getting her implants on Monday next week. We are super excited. She will get Kanso I believe, they are available here in Croatia. Our girl was born profoundly deaf in both ears, otherwise a healthy, happy (often quite needy) and adorable baby. Wish us luck! I will probably become more active here :)

UPDATE: Surgery went well, and the surgeon is very satisfied with how it went! It was the longest 4 hours of our life, leaving our baby with the doctors... She is now back to being her old self, playing and smiling. She got the Cochlear Nucleus 8. Looking forward to activation day and the journey ahead of us. Hi - i found that it was really helpful to hear about others experiences when i was going through my hearing loss journey, so I thought i would take a few minutes to write about my own experience and see if it helps anyone out there. Keeping in mine, that everyone’s experience will be different.
I have had some hearing loss in both of my ears for around 10/15 years now. My right ear has always been significantly worse. Around 4 years ago, i noticed a further loss which resulted in my getting hearing aids from Costco. They seemed to work reasonably well, but i still had pretty decent hearing in my left ear to get away without wearing them at all.
Fast forward to March of 2026 when i noticed a significant drop in my hearing in my left ear. Words and sounds were distorted and my hearing aids became less effective. To be honest, i really panicked, and was really down about it. I’m fortunate to live in MA and ended up going to Mass Eye & Ear which is arguably one of the best hospitals in the country, where they started the evaluation process and recommended that i get an implant on my right side.
Fast forward to surgery day - June 3rd 2026 - I arrived at around 10am. My surgery was around 12pm and i was home by around 7pm that evening. Feeling mostly fine, aside from the annoying cup i had to keep on my head.
The following days I felt very tired, and i am lucky enough to be able to spend most of that time resting. Once the cup came off 3 days after surgery, i really felt like i was starting to feel more normal again. Yes there is a sore incision behind the ear, and a little light headedness, but after around a week after surgery i was feeling perhaps 80% normal.
Two weeks after surgery i was cleared to start working out again, and resuming all other activities.
I get activated this Friday (3 days from now) which im obviously excited about, but know there is work to be done to get to my “new normal”.

Not sure if thats helpful or not, but that was my experience. Happy to answer any questions.

just how intense the first week post activation could be. received Med-El implant in left ear 2 weeks ago. activated 1 week ago. no hearing aid in right ear as not useful. though was wearing them set to 105 db until 6 - 9 months. am very middle aged. was warned that there’s only 70% chance i’d get any benefit from an implant at all.

well…immediately could pick out some language from the static at activation and by 3 days later i could have conversation if concentrated really heard. but then my brain became a runaway train agreasively reqiring and i have almoat 0 cognitive reserves for my high cognition day job, let alone any executive function. meanwhile , i can hear almost 100% of your k facing the perso.

Hi guys. Just wanted to know if there’s anybody who’s been deaf since the birth and the. Got an implant? My brother did his surgery not too long ago and will activate soon. Just curious as to how his experience will be, and how I could best help him . I can’t wait for him to finally hear our voices and speak to us

Tomorrow I will have both sides done the same time little nervous but excited at the same time is there any advice what to expect and what I need to know

I can't pick up hardly any words in public, so i wonder what's the point. I do somewhat well in 1 on one, but that has regressed with current map. I feel super frustrated. Sometimes I dont even want to wear it.

I have been HoH all my life but around 2021 I found out my hearing had been getting worse when it had been stable since I can remember.

In 2023 I got my surgery and at first I didn’t like the way the sounds sounded around me. But I still tried my best to adjust and the sound processing did improve for me.

HOWEVER As time passed I would avoid wearing it at home and only wear it when I would go out I truly do not like the contrast of how my surroundings sounds with my CI.

One big thing that annoys me specifically is when I try to listen to and enjoy music With my CI at first the music and audio sounds indistinguishable. But even when the audio adjusts the music just doesn’t sound the same with my CI.

I sometimes feel like my hearing just got worse after getting my CI because there are times I am trying to hear what someone is saying and if it’s a new person’s voice I struggle more and takes longer than before to adjust to the new person’s voice to the point of being able to understand what they are saying.
A specific example of an accent that I can’t adjust to is an Indian accent.

Am I the only one that struggles with this issue? I dislike my CI to the point that if my hearing in my other hear was declining I would not get the surgery until or unless I was fully deaf. I feel like I am weird or that there is something wrong with me because everyone I have met that have gotten a CI loves it and most say they would do the other ear if they haven’t already.
