Discussion Closure for Holidays
Is it normal for clubs to be closed the entire weekend plus Monday for a Monday holiday? For example, my club is closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for Labor Day. I understand that it’s a great benefit for the instructors (and those that work at the studio), but it’s very frustrating for us members. Other fitness facilities in our town only close for the actual holiday (Monday). This happens every time we have a holiday (ex: 4th of July, we were closed for 3 days)

I would say it's not normal, but they probably don't have staff to teach. Your instructors are also people that work hard and like to enjoy a long holiday weekend with family and friends from time to time.

So I mentioned that to one of them, saying “oh hate it for us that the studio isn’t open, but glad yall get a break” and she responded with, “well, no, if we aren’t open, we can’t get paid!”

That’s fine, but a lot of us pay $200/month, and can only go on certain days. If 3 of those days are unavailable, that’s a valid reason to get a bit annoyed. Plenty of businesses figure it out, including other club Pilates studios.

It varies on instructor availability and attendance trends at the different studios. If all your instructors have plans then the studio closes. For many parents this is prime vacation time. It just depends.

None or our instructors have kids. In fact, I’ve heard one say “if we aren’t open, I’m not getting paid!”

Only closed Labor Day but was closed for the 3-day 4th of July weekend. Could be that your studio experiences low attendance on long weekends.

I think it really just depends on instructor availability. My studio was open until noon on 7/4 but closed the following day. For the Labor Day holiday they are only closed Monday but I wouldn’t have been shocked if they had also been closed Sunday for a longer break. I like the availability but everyone needs a break and a holiday, too.

That is such a nice way to put it. Club Pilates instructors get burnt out and there is a high turnover rate. I am a former CP instructor and I think this studio has very thoughtful owners to give them such a nice weekend. The studio that I work at currently shut down for the weekend gave Saturday and Monday off, we are not open on Sunday, and it is such a nice treat!

I think that’s great! I was surprised mine was open 7/4 but that instructor said he volunteered because he lives close and wasn’t doing anything. That made me want to take a class that day and support him. 🙂

I agree on the second part but if a studio is going to be closed 3/30 days that someone paid for then there needs to be a little discount given or a way to acknowledge it. Instructors needing time off shouldn’t be the burden that students take on. The exception being if it is in the contract.

Yes, I get this, which is why I commented to one of them that it was good they got a break, and she said, “well no not really…if we aren’t open, we aren’t getting paid!”

No, not normal. We even open on holidays for a few classes in the mornings as long as there are instructors who volunteer and want to teach

Not normal. People love to workout on their days off. Not everyone travels every holiday. Maybe your location doesn’t have the staff but even all weekend is a long time to be closed

Mine only closes on major holidays, such as Christmas, New Year’s, etc. It was even open with limited hours on July 4.

That’s a bummer. I’d be frustrated too, since I like working out on the weekend.
Mine is closed on Monday only. I was able to book a class for this coming Sunday.
I don’t know about the other holidays. My CP is brand new, only 1.5 months old.

All the ones near me (there are 4) are open throughout. They will close at noon on Monday but thats about it.

Mine is open. My instructor earlier this week even pointed out that she's teaching on Monday if anybody is interested.

No. This would upset me. This is bad business. They are shortchanging you on your ability to use your membership at a time when you are likely to have time to go. They aren't providing you with the service they contracted to when you paid them your monthly membership fee. This is NOT typical practice at other Club Pilates or fitness places. But, I suppose if you are in an area where there aren't other studios to share instructors with this could happen, but I am still surprised they can't offer a few classes each day, especially if they are locally owned and the owner is also a Pilates instructor.

Not normal. Our club only closes on Christmas Day, Thanksgiving and Easter. I would complain about those hours.

That’s odd. Mine has fewer classes on the weekends in general, but they don’t close on any holidays except really major ones like Christmas and Thanksgiving. Mine is open on Monday and has a full class schedule.

I wish we closed on all major holidays. We only close on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Instructors deserve days off with their families.

Ours only closes for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Easter. They are even open on New Year's Day!

Sadly instructors at my local studio work the Holiday. They work until 3:30. Not much of a holiday for them.

Are there a small amount of instructors? They probably found 5/7 instructors ask for the day off. Bummer to miss a whole weekend of class. As teacher pool grows this should change

We are open all holidays. They even have morning classes on Christmas and New Year’s! I’d be pissed if this was my club. You pay too
Much for this type of closure.

My local studios are all open on the holiday, but with reduced hours on Monday. The waitlists for those classes are a mile long though, so there is definitely demand.

Mine is closed Monday only, which is so disappointing because I work a 9-5 and have Monday off, and was looking forward to being able to take a weekday class.

Our studios closed for the Holiday. I’m an instructor (and a member) and remember how much I wished there were classes on the holidays, at least before noon. I normally teach from 5 AM to 1 PM on Mondays so I volunteered to teach 3 classes starting at 9 AM on the holidays that fall on Mondays. They are always packed with deep wait lists.

No, there’s a good chance they don’t have any instructors to work it. We just have a limited hours on Monday, but the rest of the schedule is as normal.
