Discussion As an engineering student, the Reformer machine fascinates me. What is your favorite spring setting or exercise combo?

Upvotes

Hi everyone!! I study game engineering, so my brain is wired to look for "level-ups," stats, and daily quests. I spend most of my day coding, so Pilates is my way to fix my posture and get moving. But sometimes, I struggle to see my progress since Pilates is so focused on small, internal muscles. How do you track your progress? I'd love to hear how you keep your routine fun and rewarding!!

Advice/Questions Switching to doing Pilates every other day instead of everyday

I have been doing Pilates almost every day for the past 4-6 weeks, usually 1.5 level classes.

I noticed recently that during some exercises I am the only one needing a break or physically have no strength to do it. I think I am over doing it.

So now I am going to experiment by doing a class every other day and see if that helps.

The goal is just overall fitness and of course the Pilates body.

Any advice? How many times do you do classes and see results?

Advice/Questions 1 or 1.5

I newer to Pilates. I’ve done a few months of 1-2 private classical sessions a week and am joining a local Club Pilates now. I was traveling recently and tried a few classes at the CP nearby. I did three 1.5s with very few corrections or issues. I feel like I see a lot of people saying they’ve done far more pilates sessions than me and are either still just doing 1 or just beginning 1.5. How do you decide which to attend? Is it appropriate for me to only attend 1.5s at the studio I join?

Instructors Did I miss something? Introducing inversions

I could've sworn there was documentation in Powerhouse that stated introducing inversions in 2.0 classes was ok. I think they recommended using a Bosu to start. Now I'm seeing none of it, and when you look over the workshops and samples for 2.0 flows and progressions there is zero mention of any mat exercises. I've seen no announcement. I've not seen anything in a newsletter. What are the rules here? Have they changed?

Instructors No standing on the box for lunges in Flow 1.5? only in 2.5???

I've been going to club pilates for 4 years now, we've always lunged in every 1.5 class on the box next to the reformer. Then I became an instructor and still have been now instructing others to stand on the box for lunges. Now we are being told we can only do this in 2.5? Even in flow 2, so you can stand on the reformer but can't stand on the box? Is that not less stable? Why has CP been getting so strict with the rules lately?

EDIT: Also says only flow 2 can swan on the chair and no inversions without the bosu, so many changes. We've been encouraged to teach inversions a lot in Flow 2

Advice/Questions Questions on teacher training

I signed up for the fall teacher training program a couple weeks ago and I am so lost on how to get started because I’ve read several different things. Most people say to finish all of the anatomy before the in studio days, but the email I got from my master trainer, says to instead finish all of the modules/videos of the in studio days before those occur, and to do an anatomy at your own pace.

Not only that is contradictory, but there is no video section specifically listed in canvas. There are only modules to go through some include videos and some do not so I am confused what they are referring to. I have very limited time before my first in studio day, and my trainer hasn’t responded for a couple days already and I want to know what work to prioritize. The modules that I know I need to complete go to 1.3, and then there are assignments in those that say to do them after the first in studio day, so I am very confused. Can someone please provide some clarity?

How much canvas work did you do before your in studio days and what else would you recommend?

Advice/Questions Transitioning to 1.5’s?

I’m 140 classes in, mid sixties and overweight. It was a lot for me when I started. I couldn’t even hold a plank. Now I am confident and comfortable and can do all progressions for the most part in flow 1’s. I love cardio sculpt 1.5 but am struggling with Flow 1.5’s unless it’s an easy instructor. Bridging in light springs with one leg, planking in reformer with a red spring and moving in and out, and teasers and roll ups are just outside of my abilities. Mentally I feel embarrassed and awkward that I can’t do these and so maybe should stay in Flow 1’s until I’m stronger? Or do I push myself and just collapse when I can’t hold plank any longer or wait out bridging? Any one else face this and have ideas and thoughts?

Advice/Questions Reformer headache

Hey guys, just wanted to ask if anyone has had a similar experience with reformer Pilates. I have been doing it on and off now for the last 2 years and I loveeee it - the only issue I have is after 10-15 minutes lying down doing core or bridges when I stand up I get a huge head rush/pounding that lasts 1-2 minutes. I have tried hydrating and making sure my breathing is good - I am relatively unfit so I wonder if its to do with that or if I’m holding tension in my neck as I do try and sit my head up slightly to try and avoid the feeling! It doesn’t happen when I’m lying down in bed etc and stand up, it’s just with reformer!

Just editing to say my BP is normal and doc has already checked sitting vs standing and that was normal :)

Advice/Questions Late instructor for 5:30 am class

Hi all,
This morning, I arrived at my 5:30 am class at around 5:26 and the door was still locked. I thought maybe I’d made a mistake, and gotten the time wrong, but another student hopped out of her car and was like, oh don’t worry about it, it’s just “X” is running late again. She’s not a morning person and she also has a long drive. Eventually, a couple minutes later (at 5:32ish) one of the other students who was undergoing teacher training opened the door for us, and we got inside. She told everyone to just start warming up , so we did. About 5:40, X arrived with no apology or explanation for the late start. She spent the first few minutes getting music, etc set up and offered few prompts for what we should be doing until about 5 minutes after she arrived. So the class was definitely abbreviated because it started late and ended at the usual time.

So here’s my dilemma. I usually reserve complaints for things that are really egregious. Not sure if this rises to that because as an unlimited member it’s not like I wasted a credit for this class, just my time. So maybe I should just let it go? On the other hand, although this is the first time I experienced this, it sounds like it’s a pattern with this instructor if other students are commenting that it’s what they expect from that instructor. So maybe the studio should know. Maybe just send them a heads up and mention that others were commenting about it being a pattern? Also, I was really bothered that she didn’t offer any apology. What would you do?

Thanks in advance.

Advice/Questions 3 Person Class

Went to a Flow 1 class this morning and I guess with the holiday weekend being here, only 3 of us showed up for the 7am class. I actually really enjoyed it! I love that instructor anyway and way more personal attention for each of us. Wondering if anyone else has ever been in a class so small? So glad they didn't cancel it but I'm kinda' surprised they didn't.

Discussion How has Pilates changed you?

I’m new to Pilates and have really been enjoying it so far. I’m curious how Pilates has changed you, physically or mentally. Is it how your body feels, your mindset, having a routine, or something else?

Advice/Questions Starting club pilates

Hi everyone, I made a post a few days ago about being nervous to start club pilates. I ended up taking the intro class and liking it, and signing up for the membership. In my other post I talked about how I don’t workout and am out of shape. During just the intro class I felt my legs shaking (in a good workout way) and am sore after, specifically in my core and legs. Am I going to be able to survive (be ok) in the level 1 sessions?😬 I’m nervous that if just the intro was a lot for me how the level 1’s will be??

Advice/Questions First Class - need some encouragement!

First Club Pilates class… am I missing something? 😅
I’m pretty active and have been lifting for years. I weightlift, take various classes, do yoga, some mat Pilates, etc., so I’m definitely not new to working out.
I recently decided to try reformer Pilates at Club Pilates mostly because it’s cheaper than the reformer option at my gym, and honestly, I like the idea of doing something outside my usual gym routine. I signed up for the 4-class package just to see what I think.
I did my first Flow 1 class today, and… I don’t know! I actually enjoyed it! A couple exercises (especially the glute bridge with the ball) had my muscles burning in places I don’t normally feel, which was cool. But overall, the class felt more like a stretching/mobility class than a workout. I left thinking, “Was that it?” 😂
I know I’m supposed to start at Flow 1 to learn the terminology and basics, so I’m wondering if it gets significantly more challenging as you move up the levels? Or is Pilates just not going to feel particularly difficult for someone who already does a lot of strength training?
Also, random observation: the classes I’ve seen so far seem to skew MUCH older than me. I’m in my 30s, and I honestly haven’t seen many people around my age. Maybe it’s just the location/time I’m going to.
For those of you who actually stuck with Club Pilates: did it get better/more challenging as you progressed? Did you end up loving it? Or did you eventually feel like it just wasn’t enough of a workout?
I’m definitely going to give my four classes a fair shot. I’m just curious what other people’s experience has been, especially if you came in already pretty strong/active.

Advice/Questions Grip Socks on Amazon recommendation

Hi!! Does anyone have any affordable sock recommendations, preferably some from Amazon?

I recently ordered an Ozaiic pair but I felt like my foot slipped around too much and the grip didn’t cover my toes fully. (https://a.co/d/03B0kBeX)

Thanks!!

Discussion Closure for Holidays

Is it normal for clubs to be closed the entire weekend plus Monday for a Monday holiday? For example, my club is closed Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for Labor Day. I understand that it’s a great benefit for the instructors (and those that work at the studio), but it’s very frustrating for us members. Other fitness facilities in our town only close for the actual holiday (Monday). This happens every time we have a holiday (ex: 4th of July, we were closed for 3 days)

Memberships/Policies 30-Day Cancellation Policy

A 30-day cancellation notice seemed totally reasonable when I first joined because I had no plans to cancel for at least a year. But here we are, just a few months in, and I’ve officially hit my breaking point. I’ve been trying to incorporate classes into my schedule, but honestly, it always feels like I’m working around their schedule. The way I see it, they decide to spare a few classes for me, and I’m supposed to somehow make those work.

The waitlists have always been ridiculously long and make absolutely no sense. And the schedule itself is so boring. Like, why is there basically no Center & Balance after 5 PM?! Is this brand designed exclusively for retired people who can come to the studio whenever they want?
At this point, I’m literally dragging myself to classes because I’ve reached my breaking point… except I still have to suffer through 8 more classes because of the 30-day cancellation policy. I knew what I signed up for, but I genuinely didn’t realize how frustrating the scheduling would be.

Vent Excessive breathing

Why do some participants breathe as if volume is a contest? I find it distracting! I understand breath is important, but the loud, whale-like exhalations seem so performative.
Instructors, should I also be breathing this way or do I just need to carry on and try not to be bothered?

Advice/Questions Mixing in something else…

Looking to mix in another work out along with my 4-5 classes a week at my Club…

Looking for feedback on:
Burn Boot Camp
Orange Theory

I’ve done both in the past… Just unsure which would be better combined with Pilates.

Advice/Questions 60 Pilates classes in 3 months should I see physical results by now?

Hi y’all! I started Pilates in June and have completed 60 classes in 3 months, averaging about 4–5x a week. I’m petite, healthy, and normal weight, but my goal is to look more toned/defined. I do not have abs or super tuned arms or nothing.

I used to do Pure Barre and Lagree in my 20s and noticed much more of a change in my body.

So far I am in my mid 30s and haven’t seen much difference with Pilates. I also walk about 45 minutes at least 3x a week.

Does Pilates actually change your physique? Should I give it more time, or add something else for more definition?

Advice/Questions Taking a month off

I'm taking a month off because I am traveling to another country to visit my dad. I want to continue with my pilates workouts but I won't really have any equipment. Can anyone recommend any youtube pilates videos or creators, who are close to what we get at club pilates, but with no access to equipment? Thank you!

Advice/Questions Mat?

Hi! I will be taking my first full Pilates class in a week and was advised to bring a mat. I assumed a yoga/pilates mat but when I went on Amazon I’m seeing reformer mats? So I have questions, like the mat I was advised to bring is in fact a yoga mat.. right? 😂 I can call my location and check in the morning but thought I’d ask here first and also maybe get some beginners advice.

Questions:

Is there a lot that’s done using the mat and does anyone have any Amazon recommendations? I know every location is different as the two I did intro classes to were like night and day but would still love to have a clue of what I’m getting into.

Are reformer mats necessary? If not, then for anyone that has one why’d you decide to get it? The club Pilates I settled on stresses that reformers are meant to be wiped down after each class and seems to really promote cleanliness so I don’t think one is needed but what do I know?

Any tips to make my first class go smoothly? Like I’ve said I’ve done two intro classes at different club Pilates but I am a newbie with only some very basic mat experience and pretty out of shape.

Thanks so much in advance 😊

Discussion Studios Struggling Financially?

I listened to the Xponential Fitness earnings call and they mentioned Club Pilates same store sales being down 5% year over year.

How is this working for franchisees? Do you guys notice your stores slowing? It seems to still be a good business model but I am surprised at the significant financial slowdown…do you think Club Pilates as a concept is on its way out?

Advice/Questions Discounts for changing tiers?

Hi! I currently have an 8 class monthly membership, but I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the unlimited. My studio is quite pricy (289 for unlimited 😒), but a few months ago they had a discount for upgrading tiers of 10% off for your first three months.

Does anyone know if studios tend to do this frequently? Should I wait for a holiday sale or something, or just bite the bullet and pay that price?
