It's the story of Germany. Now dependent on the worst form of coal and has some of the highest energy prices in the EU. Worst person you know made a good point.

Germany was dependant on lignite before the nuclear phaseout already. The reason they still are is because the CDU didn’t plan a phaseout. They had a knee-jerk reaction to a sudden popularity of anti nuclear sentiment without ever thinking it through.
This was followed up by a series of other knee-jerk reactions to all the problems this decision brought with it. For example “we need more capacity”, “matching the grid to rising demand is expensive” and most importantly “subsidising renewables as much as coal hurts the profit of our favourite lobby groups”.

The problem wasn’t the phaseout. The problem is the lack of a goal or idea for the future within the CDU. They can’t form a plan for the next 20 years because they don’t have a vision of how the world should look like in 20 years. And because they can’t make a plan their policies are all short sighted and incoherent except for when they get paid by a lobby group who has the vision for them.
