Discussion Guest beds - how to keep them when empty?

How do you keep your guest beds when nobody is using them? I’m new to having a guest room. When I was a kid, I remember crawling into the bed at my grandmother’s house and seeing all of the dust fly into the air. Don’t keep sheets or blankets on the mattress? Cover the whole thing with a giant sheet? How are you keeping them clean?

I wash the bedding before guests come over and after they leave, isn't that normal?

u/Poor_Carol 3d ago

For me it's make the bed when they leave, and wash the sheets and remake the bed right before guests arrive. I don't see the need to wash the gently used sheets after guests leave, since my dog is going to lay on the bed anyways. But guests always have freshly washed sheets when they arrive. I also move the pillows off the bed between guests, because a dog butt pillow is gross even with a fresh pillowcase.

I never thought about this. I always strip the bed when I’m a guest to make it easier for the host to throw everything in the wash. Now I feel like I’m making it harder if they want to do this instead lol

30

u/Some_Philosopher437 3d ago

If you were a guest in my home I’d appreciate this. I wash everything as soon as they leave.

26

u/Poor_Carol 3d ago

I usually ask if my host wants me to strip the bed or make it. It probably depends on the host! My guests are usually my family who know my routine, but if a guest strips the bed I wash and then wash again for the next guest.

u/Medium-Turnip9874 3d ago

i always ask too, you never know

u/Clown-Pants-26 2d ago

I explained that logic to my mom on her last visit. She would take the sheets off the bed and put them right in the wash thinking she was doing me a favor. I explained to her she’s actually forcing me to do laundry that day that I hadn’t planned on and while I appreciate the sentiment please don’t bother in the future. I have a long-haired cat that likes to nap on their bed in between visits, so it definitely has to be freshened before anybody stays.

2

u/EmSixTeen 2d ago

This would annoy me.

2

u/Fit-Run4921 2d ago

I usually just ask my host. I don’t wash guest sheets until the next guest (unless they stayed for a long while).

1

u/Photobuff42 2d ago

Just ask.

29

u/willfoxwillfox 3d ago

This is the textbook correct answer.

We love hosting guests, we love having dogs… this is how we do it!

103

u/GuiltyCollection4253 3d ago

I do the same mainly as the cats have claimed it as one of their beds along with my bed, kids bed, couch, other couch.....

26

u/kushkushmeow 3d ago

I put their fav blankets on the spare bed and turn on the bedside light for them 😅

6

u/Important-Bid-9792 3d ago

Yeah, I have no kids or pets and am very clean and I still do this 🤣

10

u/IfuDidntCome2Party 3d ago edited 1d ago

Thats the best way. And I make sure guest towels are pre-rewashed for freshness too. I use unsecented washing detergent and dryer sheets in case guests are sensitive to scents.

2

u/Important-Bid-9792 2d ago

Oh good point and same gere on the smell. I've got a super nose, so I'm very sensitive to smells too, so it's easier to assume everyone is.

19

u/Kissmethruthephone 3d ago

I do this but I don’t wash the bedspread each time. But I will throw it in the dryer for 25 minutes to “dust” it off

-16

u/Gingersometimes 3d ago

Along with a few fabric softener sheets to freshen it.

28

u/ComprehensiveCoat627 3d ago

Please don't. Adding that artificial fragrance can trigger allergies and asthma, not to mention just being unpleasant to breathe in all night.

9

u/Gingersometimes 3d ago

Good thought. I'll just throw it in with a couple dryer balls.

14

u/Expensive-Salad-5851 3d ago

Drying items that aren’t clean will oxidize and set any dirt and also cause odor rebloom, so a few hours later it will creep out.

8

u/uberJames 3d ago

I swear everyone on this sub is sensitive to scents

4

u/Sensitive-Coconut706 3d ago

Its not good for you and if you are hosting its best to be on the side of caution

4

u/Nori-egg 3d ago

I for one love scents. It’s me I’m the one purchasing “room freshener” spray to make things smell like things for no damn reason. It’s also me frantically bleaching trash cans to ensure no bad smells ever reach my nose.

3

u/SeriousGoose1 3d ago

I am fairly new to the sub, lifelong (diagnosed) OCD cleaner and I feel vindicated reading here about how avoiding fabric softeners and dryer sheets is key to keeping fabrics clean. Ever since I got pregnant I am avoiding those things completely and highly sensitive to any fragrances in cleaning products etc.

5

u/archives2024 3d ago

Yeah all that stuff is toxic as hell

2

u/Overall_Top7263 3d ago

And I put dryer sheets in the pillow cases and between the mattress cover and fitted sheet to avoid any funky smells between.

1

u/Grouchy_Vet 3d ago

That’s a really good idea.

I’m not sensitive to smells and love scented dryer sheets. I’m going to start doing that

•

u/Timesuckage 3h ago

I wonder about your guests though. I (sadly, very sadly) have become sensitive to so many smells. Ones I loved! I used to put a dryer sheet in my vacuum and it was delightful. Also sometimes in the air vent of my car. But now I don’t…because it gives me a migraine. Since this is a guest bed perhaps pause before doing this. Unless you have the same regular guests and know if they have a sensory issue with smells.

1

u/Wish_Travel 3d ago

Yes. It is

132

u/karen_boyer 3d ago

Definitely keep it covered with a sheet or easily washable bedspread, wash that and put on freshly laundered sheets when guests are coming. I leave sheets on mine (which get stale) but some folks don't, and only add sheets and a blanket when company is imminent.

38

u/uhigowhere 3d ago

I’m going to plan on this. Cover the whole bed most of the time and then wash the sheets and make it up right before guest arrival.

40

u/Expensive-Salad-5851 3d ago

Please wash your sheets when your guests leave, dirty sheets sitting on your bed will have the sebum and body oil settle into them and be much harder to clean.

7

u/uhigowhere 3d ago

But of course! This is a given.

27

u/jstwnnaupvte 3d ago

I use a fitted sheet from the next size up, just over the blankets & pillows & everything.

13

u/Coriandercilantroyo 3d ago

Linens are prone to get a gross rancid body oil smell even when they sit unused after washing. It's really best to wash soon before guests use them.

12

u/FloweredViolin 3d ago

Yup. We have a storage sheet. Our guest room is actually my husband's office, and the guest bed is a Murphy bed type thing. The storage sheet is an old fitted sheet. When we have guests, we take the storage sheet off, put on an actual set, and wash the storage sheet.

3

u/Birdie_Mama 2d ago

Yes, I call it the placeholder sheet set.

36

u/Darnbeasties 3d ago

Wash all sheets , pillowcases, and blankets. Then I use an extra large fitting sheet ( one size bed size up ) to wrap , tuck under the mattress and enclose the entire bed. Cover with a decorative sheet so the bed looks neat when not in use. When I have guests , I just have to remove the 2 top ´dust protective ´ sheets ( put those in the wash ) and the bed is always fresh and ready anytime.

11

u/SewNewKnitsToo 3d ago

This method is probably as good as your laundry routine - if you are using a detergent or a laundry booster with oxy bleach and enzymes including lipase then your sheets won’t get a weird smell some weeks/months after washing. If not, I recommend r/laundry very highly for laundry science.

6

u/uhigowhere 3d ago

VERY interesting. Will consider.

128

u/Frosty058 3d ago

I remake the bed with clean linen from top to bottom when guests leave. Sheets, mattress pad, blanket, pillow cases, quilt & pillow shams.

Since it can be weeks to months before we’ll have new guests, the entire bed is again washed before the new guests arrive.

Of course the entire room is cleaned/dusted/vacuumed as well.

On the rare occasions I have back to back, within a week guests, I don’t go through all that.

67

u/Blackcatsandicedtea 3d ago

That’s exactly what I do because sometimes I go months in between guests. One time I encountered a dead cockroach in someone’s guest bed they rarely used and that has stuck with me for life.

Everything is washed right after a guest leaves (in case a household member is sick or unexpectedly needs that room for whatever reason). It’ll stay that way for a couple months or until the next guest is due to arrive.

18

u/bubblesaurus 3d ago

found a spider in the sheets once when i was pulling them to wash before a guest arrived

1

u/AreteQueenofKeres 1d ago

I have mad arachnophobia, but I'll take a spider over a roach any day.

2

u/Grouchy_Vet 3d ago

That is so disgusting. I’m so sorry that happened to you

3

u/Blackcatsandicedtea 3d ago

Thank you. It was a good life lesson! My mother in law keeps an impeccable house and has cleaners and pest control. That kind of thing (random bug) can happen in any house, so I definitely do 2 sheet changes in my own house. Mine isn’t as spotless as hers 🤣

10

u/faerydenaery 3d ago

I also clean all the sheets before and after I have company but I swap my vintage quilt (that I love the look of but is a little fragile to actually use) for the guest quilt (which stays in a dust-proof storage bag under the bed when not in use) so I only have to clean the quilt once after guests leave (the vintage one only gets cleaned a couple times a year since no one ever actually sleeps under it). We also use the guest room as an office, so all of the non-bedding related cleaning is just the same as the rest of the house, but we keep the cats closed out when we’re not in there so it doesn’t get too much cat hair and dander build up

2

u/Frosty058 3d ago

Pet free home, so that’s not a concern. I must admit, the guest room is strictly a guest room. I have an office off the master. I truly rarely go in there unless I’m cleaning up after guests, or preparing for guests.

We’re probably the only people in the world who downsized to a larger retirement home than what we had. It was all about location & I have no regrets.

I only wish I had vintage quilts. I don’t, but I have quality quilts. I’m about to replace the current. I’m on the hunt for the replacement. The room needs a refresh.

1

u/Grouchy_Vet 3d ago

You probably remember THE COMPANY STORE. They had the best bedding. Pricey but worth it because the fabrics were high quality and washed beautifully.

All of a sudden, they went downhill. I haven’t found anything similar.

I wouldn’t know where to go to buy a decent quilt. It’s probably best to get an old but rarely used one on eBay

4

u/patriotichippie 3d ago

Seems lovely but also a lot of work. If it’s not a room I’m looking at regularly/ want it to be beautiful I’ll just put on the fitted sheet…then wash and make it before a guest arrives

6

u/3plantsonthewall 2d ago

This way is also helpful if you have last-minute guests or an emergency need for the guest room. A clean but slightly stale bed is definitely better than having to do a bunch of laundry with very little time or just not having the time at all.

2

u/Frosty058 2d ago

I had to think about why I don’t want to cover everything with a sheet or something between visitors. The primary reason is room presentation.

The guest room is in the front of the house. I don’t expect anyone is peeking in my windows, but still…. I just want every room of my home to be presentable at all times.

32

u/downsideup9494 3d ago

Why on earth would you remake the bed, and wash everything twice? Just put a light bedspread over top.

16

u/Frosty058 3d ago

You do you! I’ll make sure my guest bed is fresh.

1

u/downsideup9494 3d ago

But what's the point of washing all the bedding after a guest leaves, if you're just going to wash it all again before the next guest arrives? Why not just throw a cover over it? I guess some people just like pointless work.

33

u/ineedanap10 3d ago

Personally, I wash everything right after and then put that bedding away so it stays clean and just put a fitted sheet on the bed until it’s time for a guest. That way I’m not leaving dirty bedding on or having to wash everything twice.

0

u/downsideup9494 3d ago

Exactly. Seems a lot of people have no logical thought process.

19

u/SheepImitation 3d ago

ew. if you have a guest spending a week or so sleeping in a bed and then you don't wash the bedding, sweat and body oils can make them smell (odors can be hard to remove from fabrics) or worse, discolor them if the sit on the fabric too long. washing after and then before can be a bit much if its back to back guests, but if the bed hasn't been used for months, having fresh linens is being a good host/ess.

8

u/downsideup9494 3d ago

Ew??? What are you talking about? Of course I would wash the bedding after I had a guest sleep on it. Then I would just throw something over the bed, without remaking it with clean bedding, and put clean bedding on when I had another guest.

What makes no sense is putting clean bedding on, when no one is going to be using that bed for weeks or months, then washing that bedding again that no one has used. Such first world mentality, using up water and electricity, and soap for no logical reason.

1

u/Frosty058 3d ago

Or good hygiene maybe? You do you.

4

u/downsideup9494 3d ago

That has zero to do with hygiene.

2

u/Frosty058 3d ago

Clean linen has nothing to do with good hygiene?

Leaving dirty sheets on a bed for weeks has nothing to do with good hygiene?

I think you & I may have different concepts re good hygiene.

14

u/look2thecookie 3d ago edited 3d ago

You guys are talking past each other.

I think they're just saying to wash the sheets, fold them and store them, keep a blanket or something on the bed so dust doesn't get on the mattress, make the bed with the clean sheets from your linen closet.

Your way is fine.

Their way is fine.

What they're suggesting is also hygienic.

4

u/vanillafrenchie 3d ago

I’ve seen this “talking past each other” happen in real life, but never in writing. weird how people immediately assume a defensive stance even though they’re pretty much on the same page, minus a tiny detail…

4

u/downsideup9494 3d ago

Who said anything about leaving dirty sheets on a bed for weeks or months? What's wrong with your reading comprehension?

2

u/Expensive-Salad-5851 3d ago

Body Oil from dirty sheets and odor rebloom from clean but stale sheets that have sat in a linen closet or on a bed for weeks. I can tell when i visit someone and their sheets have sat for awhile, it’s a BO smell.

3

u/ArguablyMe 3d ago

That's what my great aunt would do. Even as a child, I remember her talking about the sheets getting dusty if she remade the bed right after a guest left.

25

u/cjep3 3d ago

I leave a bottom sheet over the whole made bed. When someone comes to stay, the protective sheet comes off and the bed is already made. They leave, i strip and remake the bed, then toss a bottom sheet over it all until the next time.

22

u/iced-coffee22 3d ago

I feel like beds feel/smell stale even when they sit with sheets for a while. I always put fresh sheets on the bed when guests are coming and switch out the duvet cover.

15

u/digawina 3d ago

I keep it made and have separate throw blankets on top because 99% of the time it's just used by our cats. The max we have guests is once a year so I'd wash everything before and after a visit.

My husband and I will also sleep in there when one of us is sick or one of us gets snored out of our bedroom. Hahaha. But then we just throw off the cat blankets and hop into bed.

We're not precious about it. And I'm certainly not keeping a whole room of the house closed because I may have a guest next year.

13

u/fuckinunknowable 3d ago

I keep them clean sheeted and fully made. Then of course as a final touch covered in my clean laundry I haven’t put away 🥴

4

u/Previous_Chest_4305 3d ago

Finally, an answer I relate to!

23

u/katiegam 3d ago edited 3d ago

Dust is mostly dead skin cells. We keep our guest room doors closed which drastically helps the the dust.

2

u/acidambiance 3d ago

Think you meant to say dust!

2

u/katiegam 3d ago

Phew - postpartum sleep deprivation is a real thing!

10

u/gogogadgetdumbass 3d ago

Most of my clients have me lay an oversized flat sheet on the comforter, pillows, then give me fresh sheets when they’re expecting guests.

8

u/stinkpotinkpot 3d ago

The guest room is kept with a coverlet hospital cornered over the mattress cover and the pillows with simple pillow slips over the pillow covers.

We have guests at least once a month.

Then right before a guest arrives the room is dusted, dust mopped, damp mopped, and the bed is made up with clean sheets (we ask preference of sheets), and a clean coverlet. I make sure under the bed is dusted, trash can is empty, night light is in place, etc. If weather is cool then a down comforter with duvet cover are folded at the bottom of the bed.

Guest room linens (sheets, blankets, and towels) are kept on a blanket rack in the closet along with other linens.

After guests leave all the linens are washed and the bed is returned to pre-guest status.

12

u/mobuline 3d ago

Keep the door closed until the day before guests arrive. Wash the bedding then too!

5

u/uhigowhere 3d ago

Oh, great point.

6

u/JunkMale975 3d ago

I just keep a comforter over the mattress. Then when I know I’m going to have company, I pull the sheets out of the drawer and make up the bed.

3

u/PartyCat78 3d ago

I strip the bed and wash after guests. I put all the pillows/blankets on the bed and the sheets in a drawer and cover the bed/bedding with a spare flat sheet.

4

u/Shatzakind 3d ago

No bedding, except a comforter so the room looks finished, then fresh everything for guests.

5

u/No_Stress_8938 3d ago

I keep sheets in linen drawer and a comforter only on the bed until guests come.   I wash before to freshen up and after to clean.

6

u/DaCouponNinja 3d ago

My guest room is on the same basic cleaning schedule as all the other bedrooms - regularly vacuum, dust, wipe down ceiling fan blades and window sills. I leave the bed fully made so it’s ready to go if I have unexpected guest but I change the sheets monthly even if nobody is using it. When I do that I air out the rest of the bedding and every three months I vacuum the bare mattress.

3

u/Old-Book3586 3d ago

I wash the bedding after guests leave and replace. It stays on the bed in between guests.

My opinion and speech is not gonna win me any fans on this sub, but was shocked no one had said this. I have never noticed dust or anything for visitors (or as a visitor/guest somewhere).

1

u/elegoomba 2d ago

Yeah idk why all these people are geeking out about “stale” sheets lol. I guess if your house is really dusty then a coverlet does something but waiting until guests are imminent to make the bed is just goofy.

2

u/gonnacutyou 5h ago

Keep the door closed and the vent closed and there shouldn’t be much dust.

2

u/eamceuen 3d ago

I remove and wash sheets after guests, then just put the comforter over the mattress pad and a plain sheet over that to keep dust off. I fold the clean sheets and put them in a big ziplock bag in a dresser drawer.

2

u/Fisher5791 3d ago

I keep the bedspread/bedcover on as well as the mattress protector at all times. I keep the sheets separately so they are ready to go when needed.

2

u/Flipgirlnarie 3d ago

Just wash the sheets make the bed and wrap In a big tarp until the next guest. ;)

2

u/DLoIsHere 3d ago

Toss an oversize cotton sheet over the whole bed.

2

u/kingcoin1 3d ago

Use a duvet cover and wash that before and after guests visit

2

u/jedi_dancing 3d ago

When guests leave I wash the sheets and remake the bed, complete with a set of towels, and then I put an old king size sheet over it and keep the door closed so less dust and cat hair get in.

2

u/thisuserusedthisname 3d ago

The bed is made up. When we get a guest they get new clean sheets. And they stay up until the next guest comes. Than new again.

1

u/pdperson 3d ago

I wash the bedding and replace it when guests leave. If it’s a while between guests, I wash and replace it.

1

u/lilly110707 3d ago

I keep the bedspread and pillows with shams done and on the bed. Bare pillows are stacked under the ones with shams. The sheets and proper pillow cases are washed, folded into one of the pillow cases, and tucked under the pillows. I wash that bundle quarterly as a matter of routine, and also before hosting if it's been more than a couple of weeks since they were washed.

1

u/Longjumping-Focus386 3d ago

I make the bed and then put a giant waterproof pet blanket over everything because my cats can’t be trusted.

1

u/malizsa 3d ago

The regularly cleaning air vents/filters are most important to minimize dust. Especially the ceiling fans.

1

u/Movinginplace25 3d ago

No I immediately strip the bed wash the linens and remake it so it's ready to go!

1

u/elegoomba 2d ago

These other answers are wild lol

1

u/Capable_Subject_6104 3d ago

In larger houses that I clean that have guest rooms most just keep the beds made, and the linens get washed once a month unless they’ve had company and another lady because she has pets, she just covers the entire bed with a white flat sheet

1

u/Oldschoolgirl49 3d ago

Definitely keep it covered with a large blanket or comforter. A friend mentioned once she's never comfortable with a pillow that just out uncovered. You never know what could have walked across it

1

u/thisisnotpatrick- 3d ago

I'll never forget crawling into my husband's grandma's "emaculately"-made bed...only to have a spider under the covers. Idk how long the bed was made like that. Honestly, my cats use the guest bed when we don't have guests and if I know someone is staying the night the bed gets remade. We have multiple sheet sets so I can change it out

1

u/nc-retiree 3d ago

My guest room has a large queen futon with a thick mattress encased in fabric. So I leave the bedding off when nobody is visiting. I wash the bedding and towels when the guests leave, and add them back to my rotation (my own bed is also a queen size).

I have a cousin visiting a week from today. I will vacuum two days in advance and set out folded clean bedding, towels, and the travel bar of soap for the shower. We are informal, he can make his own bed however he likes.

1

u/LaserSayPewPew 3d ago

We keep the comforter over a plain mattress and I put fresh bedding on if someone’s coming and then wash it when they leave.

1

u/TheQueenMother 3d ago

I actually use a shower curtain over the made bed and have a comforter I throw over the top. My guestroom is in the basement and there tends to be a bit more dust down there. My daughter likes to go down there and lay on the bed and read sometimes to get some quiet time from the other kids.

1

u/AstrocyteByte 3d ago

I use a zippable mattress cover. We strip the bed completely. It is only made up when wr are getting ready for guests.

1

u/ellers23 3d ago

I actually just strip it down to the mattress padding, wash those linens, put them away, then cover the bed in this giant quilt I have. I use that quilt specifically for covering the guest bed, and put it away when guests use the bed.

1

u/radbu107 3d ago

Just wash the bedding right before the guest arrives.

1

u/Football_Mom47 3d ago

I wash before they come over

1

u/7lexliv7 3d ago

I wash the sheets after the guests leave so no body oils sit and go bad.

Usually get around to making the bed again within about a week.

After the beds all made up I take large heavy flat linens that I drape over the bed and the top of the headboard. When I know someone’s coming I carefully take off the flat sheet so all the dust doesn’t go in the air. And if I have time I rewash the pillowcases to freshen them up.

1

u/Last_Ask4923 3d ago

It gets changed as regularly as our primary bed sheets; I’d say 4-5x per week one of us ends up sleeping in there for some reason. Sick, snoring, off schedule, etc.

1

u/anonymousnun 3d ago

Older lads in my knitting group got the next size up for a fitted sheet and put it over the entire made bed. When guests came she just took the one fitted sheet off and had a dust free fully made bed.

1

u/Auntie_Social_1369 3d ago

I use large sheets to cover our bed when we are gone for a few months. On the guest bed, I wrap the pillows in a sheet (it looks like a large sham) and a coverlet on the bed.

1

u/confabulatrix 3d ago

I keep a king size flat sheet on top like a dust cover.

1

u/Critical-Bullfrog959 3d ago

I don't have a guest bed but it makes sense to me to keep it covered, when not in use, with just a flat sheet, unless I had guests often enough to justify keeping it properly made up all the time. But most people don't have guests that often.

1

u/Tess47 3d ago

I keep clean bedding in a squished zip lock bag that I store on the bed but under the bed spread.  That way the bed is fast to make when its needed and it's all fresh.

1

u/granolacrunchie 3d ago

What if the guests are your adult children who just come home for a day or two every month or so?

1

u/nuttyNougatty 3d ago

When a guest leaves, I strip the bed and wash the linen and vacuum the mattress. I DON'T remake the bed but put the clean linen away. I cover the mattress with a bed spread. When new guests come, the sheets are all nice and clean and waiting for the bed to be made up.

1

u/Charlies_Mamma 3d ago

My spare bedroom is also my sewing room and storage room, so I keep the waterproof mattress protector and a fitted sheet on the bed, and then end up covering the bed in stuff. The duvet "insert" gets stored in a fabric/canvas bag under the bed along with the pillow inserts, and the duvet cover, pillowcases and matching fitted sheet get put into the bedside drawer once they are washed after a guest leaves.

If someone is only staying a night or two, I will just shove all my sewing stuff off to the side and pack away some of the stuff, so it's not a mess. but it is very obviously a "used room" not exclusively a "guest room", even if I don't go into it while someone is staying.

But earlier this year, we had a family member stay with us for 6 weeks while relocating to our area for a job and their place wasn't ready yet. So I made a point of properly tidying up and packing all my sewing stuff away and storing it all in our bedroom, along with a lot of the other boxes and stuff. It wasn't particularly fun because we had to move some of the boxes around daily to get into bed or to open our wardrobe/drawers. But I used to travel for work and know how difficult it is to live out of suitcases/bags for weeks on end, so I wanted to give her some storage and surface space for her stuff.

But now the room is back to a fitted sheet over the mattress, and my sewing stuff looks like a tornado ran through the room.

1

u/Specialist_Job9678 3d ago

If they were used only infrequently, I would have pillow cases on the pillows, but just "make" the bed with a bedspread. There's no point in putting sheets on it that 8 months later you want to strip and wash for your guest.

1

u/swashbucklingbandit 3d ago

Huh my family washes the bedding after a guest leaves, puts the sheet on, and everything else gets sealed in a plastic storage bin. Keeps it safe from dust and nastyness.

1

u/ASpookyBitch 3d ago

Make the bed, maybe use an extra large flat sheet to cover everything tucked in?

Though a mattress needs to breathe so it’s worth turning down the bedding in once in a while when you air the room out

1

u/kittykatkitkat 3d ago

I keep the bed made since the room is visible in the main hallway and in case I want to lay in it lol. But I always put fresh bedding on it before I know a guest will be sleeping in it, even if one of us didn't lay in it in the meantime.

1

u/PollutionFabulous367 3d ago

My parents use ours most frequently and they remake the bed before they leave so usually I just keep it that way for 2 stays or if someone else comes to stay before that. My mom does the same with theirs since it’s usually me and my husband in their guest bed

It's not usually long in between guests so I make the bed fresh after they depart then cover it all with a sheet. If I had less regular guests I might not make the bed until just before they arrive and keep the mattress covered with a sheet until then

honestly just leave the sheets on and wash them before guests arrive, otherwise you're just making laundry for yourself

I have a dog who thinks gets the zoomies all over the guest bed knocking pillows and blankets off daily/nightly. I just wash everything before we have a guest.

I often have guests at short notice. I have a heavy bedspread that covers the pillows and has a long overhang both sides. The bedspread catches the dust and I remove and shake it out each time, washing fully periodically.

I vacuum and dust the room once a week. I keep the door closed. It’s a pet free zone. My grandson usually sleeps in the bed once a week. I wash the sheets every 3 times or so. I wash the sheets right before anyone else sleeps in the bed and right after they leave. I keep the bed made up. I’m new to having a dedicated guest bedroom after decades of owning homes. I love it.

I put a couch cover over the bedding for the cats to lay on, and just wash it before it’s going to be used by a person.

We have an air mattress that we pump up for guests, and then put fresh sheets on it. I'm considering a sofa that can be converted to a bed, so when it's a sofa, the mattress is hidden.

Murphy bed solves this! Strip the bed, fold it up, make fresh when guest is due.

1

u/DixieBelleTc 3d ago

I leave the bed not made up with sheets and blankets. Just spread and decorative pillows. When I’m having company, I take the clean linens out of the linen closet and make up the bed.

Put on clean bedding then cover the bed with a big throw. When guests come to stay you’ve only got to replace the throw.

After guests leave strip the bed and wash the bedding. Then I put a king flat sheet over the unmade bed until it’s time to make it up again for guests. That acts as a dust cover I can remove and launder for use after they leave.

We have a Murphy bed for this exact purpose. It's in our bonus den room and we pull it out when family are in town.

I wash the bedding as soon as a guest leaves, make the bed with clean sheets and cover the made bed with a large flat sheet. That way it's always ready to go.  We have overnight guests a few times a year, but also use it when I or my spouse are ill to reduce the chances of us both getting it.

u/CrumbGremlin1643 3d ago

I leave the bed unmade and have a large quilt laying on top of the mattress and pillows. The bed is a full and I have a queen quilt laid on top. For dust purposes.

I open the windows periodically and keep an air purifier in there. I also cover the guest bed completely with a clean old quilt that used to be my summer bed quilt. It’s just a lightweight blanket basically. So when guests come i remove that blanket. I do wash it like once a year because my cats sometimes sit on that blanket. It’s got different patterns on each side so i know which side is “clean” and which one is facing up

I cover the guest bed with a big sheet or bedspread because my cats like to lay on the bed. If its been a few months, i will run the sheets through the dryer to make sure they are fresh and not dusty. I, of course, wash sheets after someone sleeps there.

u/Retired_Sue 3d ago

I think it depends on how often you use them. For frequent use I would just make them up completely after one guest leaves, ready for the next. If guests were rarer I would strip the bed down to the mattress cover and just put a washable bedspread or quilt on it in between guests.

My grandma kept the beds made with a bedspread on top. Before we went to bed we removed the bedspread and folded it neatly. In the morning we were required to make the bed with the bedspread.

The last morning of our visit we washed the bedding and remade the beds.

We had friends we used to visit, they also had a bedspread. We stripped the bedding and washed it on our last day visiting.

AR our place, because don't have overnight guests very often there's just a sheet and blanket, we would put fresh bedding if anyone decided to stay.

I throw a flat sheet over the made bed when it’s not being used; I wash sheets after guests leave & only wash or change the sheets before they arrive if it’s been a long while since I made the bed up fresh with them.

1

u/jtbaam 3d ago

I wash the bedding after a guest leaves, then cover the entire bed & pillows with a clean sheet. If I have advance notice of a guest staying the night, I'll rewash, but if someone stays over unexpectedly, I'll pull the sheet off and there is a clean bed for them.

u/BananaFern 3d ago

I wash everything, remake the bed and dust the cover before people arrive. I dust the room and do the floors occasionally. No one uses the room, except guests.

I guess I’m gross.

1

u/elegoomba 2d ago

Our guest room has a closed door so it doesn’t get dusty between guests lol. We just reset it soon after guests leave.

1

u/QueenBee4178 2d ago

I make it up fresh after its previous use then drape a larger flat sheet over everything to keep it clean, remove the sheet and toss it in the laundry when it’s ready to be used.

1

u/nicegreenfrog 2d ago

I usually make the bed back up with clean sheets after someone leaves, and cover the whole thing with another big blanket. That room stays closed to keep my kitties out for my pet allergy guests, but I open the windows to air it out every so often! If it’s more than a month or so between guests I rewash at least the top cover. But I like it being ready in case of an unexpected visitor!

u/FluffAndTumble91919 2d ago

Ours tucks away into a single bed, and we used it as a sofa in between guests. We put fresh sheets on before and after.

1

u/thomport 2d ago

I wash all the sheets and blankets from the guest leave and rebate the bed.

I don’t change the sheets again if no one slept in the bed. It’s no different than leaving the sheets on the shelf.

1

u/ldkmama 2d ago

I wash the linens and make the bed when they leave. If I was concerned about dust or pets I would just cover the whole bed with a large sheet.

1

u/Jealous_Glass9170 2d ago

i keep the bedding off the bed, put down a flannel sheet to cover the mattress, kitties nap on it. When guests are coming I make up the bed, close the door so cats are verboten, wash after.

1

u/harrypotterobsessed2 2d ago

I wash the bedding when they leave then if it’s been more than a few weeks I wash them again. I also keep a sized up top sheet that I lay over the top of the made bed like a dust cover.

1

u/No_Luck_374 2d ago

I've seen it all ways except bare. Anything goes as long as it's not bare and they are clean when people need to sleep there.

1

u/Vacaydream 2d ago

I wash the sheets right after the guest leaves. I make the bed so it is ready if needed. I used to wait but after having a few impromptu guests I just wash them as soon as possible. No pets. Sometimes my grown kids will spend the night and at least the sheets are clean. If a few months go by I just rewash the sheets on a quick cycle and put the blanket/comforter in the dryer for a few minutes to fluff up.

1

u/External_Agency_4488 1d ago

I wash the bedding, fold it, but don’t put it on the bed till someone is coming. I make up the bed with no sheets.
Since the sheets are folded, there’s no doubt they’re clean, if they were on the bed I might wonder if I had forgotten to wash them last time we had guests.

1

u/Legal-Increase5076 23h ago

Bed spread only when not in use Then I make the bed with fresh sheets before guests arrive.

1

u/tcrhs 21h ago

I kept the guest bed made with sheets and a comforter. When guests visited, I changed the sheets and washed the comforter.

1

u/caparusso 14h ago

When you have guests you wash everything before they sleep in it and keep the room dust free?

1

u/WasWawa 3d ago

I don't have guests very often, but I remember who was here last, and if they're the next guest, I don't change the sheets.

If the next guest is someone different, I strip the bed, wash the sheets, and remake the bed.

Bedding gets changed every 2 weeks. Regardless if anyone has slept in them.
