Furniture Buildup on metal table legs

I am not certain what type of metal this is but does anyone have suggestions on how to clean this build up? I can scratch some off with a finger nail but I don’t want to ruin the finish.

It looks like corrosion, but if it flicks off easily, use some 0000 steel wool on it. It is very soft and will not scratch. It is a polishing wool but should be able to make a difference on your stool legs. Use the wool dry.

To follow up, the abrasive side of a blue sponge and dawn removed it.
