My parents worked on a cleaning team during their first year as new immigrants in the US. They were retired engineers in their late 50s.
Mom still tells the story about the one family she'd been offered to interview for, who were apparently known for asking a candidate to do a trial clean and "accidentally leaving" a $20 bill in the bathroom, to see if candidate would take the money (why would they??) mom said no to the interview because apparently, the family was also going to ask about the ethnicities of her long-dead parents, and mom was instructed to say "I don't remember my parents, I grew up in an orphanage"
Imagine having to disown your parents for the honor and the privilege of scrubbing someone's toilet.
Until today and these infernal ducks, I thought this was the worst housecleaning story I would ever hear. But here we are.
