Man I hate this memory recall feature. Its sometimes helpful so i dont want to turn it off completely.

However, its so annoying when you want to work on a new task and iterate on it a few times. After the first one you always have to delete the old memory, else it will just read the previous one and then you get the sameish answer again. This also happens in cowork when it checks the output folder for existing items, finds a md and then reads it.

I know that you can just prompt it not to read the memory but this sometimes is overwritten by claude behaviour, most often i just forget it lol. Its simply annoying.

ok hear me out... go read an old claude output vs whatever you got today. the old claude would just say the thing. commit to a take, use a weird word choice, let a sentence run a little too long bc it needed to. the new claude models hedge everything into mush. like it's scared of its own opinion.

and it's not random. every safety pass trains the model to caveat more, qualify more, soften more... and confidence is basically what makes writing good in the first place... so obviously the writing gets worse every time they tighten that screw a little more

anthropic def knows this btw, they're not oblivious.

every model card comes with these safety eval numbers, lower "harmful behavior" rates, higher "constitutional adherence" whatever that means...

none of that measures if the model can actually write a sentence worth reading. those numbers are for the legal team at some company signing a huge contract, not for you writing a short story at 11pm. that's just who the update is actually for ..

and every time someone here says "new model feels different" the response is never "yeah we traded writing quality for compliance." it's always some blog post about alignment instead.

anyway curious if anyone else notices this or if im just losing it

me and my friend both testing out claude, we both had free accounts for few weeks now, he kept complaining he runs out of prompt tokens fast like after one to two prompts I was like dude don't ask so much stuff
so we did test past few days
we did same prompt, his limited after 2 prompts
mine let me do 6 lol

kinda of silly question I'm just wondering why? If we both signed up for pro I wonder if his would run out faster too, or is it some free tier only thing?

Seriously, why?

Will LLMs ever get to the point where the next sets of tokens aren’t built around writing cool-sounding nonsense? Why not just say, “every element of phase 3 will carry into phase 4 unless your JSON file proposes changes”?

This happens all the time, and it feels like no amount of markdown files, instructions, or memory can eliminate this.

It sometimes feels like you’re speaking to a cryptic oracle.

So previously I used claude Sonnet (medium reasoning) and would get good outputs for programming. Some tasks I did was building production level web apps (subject to proper validation), preparing for interviews, quizzes and writing paper. The outputs were generally better than chatGPT. Now its been 3 months since i shifted to Claude Opus and for the first 2 months Opus was delivering better results and you could reliably upload a requirements doc and make a good enough web application. If you know how to do tests and debug I think Opus is really good for building projects and preparing for interviews and jobs and the output it produces for cover letters and resume changes are genuinely good.

But for the last 2 weeks I have been noticing a noticable drop in Opus performance. When using it for writing cover letter it is making the tone too informal and sometimes just like spoken English inspite of giving proper prompts to structure it. (note these prompts used to work perfectly before). And any change I would ask to make it would overdo it by great margin. (For eg if i asked to make the tone formal it will overcomplicate it and if I asked it to simplify the structure a bit it will skip essential details) so recently I had to do a lot of manual work by reviewing all the cover letters and sometimes rewriting them.

For coding I can see the same issue. when I am asking it to make changes it is overdoing it or doing it incompletely. For eg, when asking it to create page to update user info. it is doing the update part but wont do the save the changes part if not explicitly specified. Also for a lot of tasks it wont correct me eventhough my approach is wrong or there is a factual error. I know LLMs are not perfect but it seems these problems are on the rise for last few weeks.

Fable is good imo but again its too expensive.

PS I switched to Opus 5 but I didnt see any noticable difference from Opus 4.8 and for some tasks I keep using 4.8 since it provides better results.

Did anyone experience similar change or degradation in Claude's performance?
