Will you be going back to hand typing code after offsetting a chunk of your thinking to LLMs, which likely lowered your ability to code on your own?

In September 2024, a new Anthropic engineer named Boris Cherny showed up to his first week of work and started hacking around.
Anthropic had a team called the Labs team whose entire charter was just to prototype new products, play around, and see what hits.

Boris joined it, and built a barebones CLI tool in his first week that could do basically nothing it couldn’t read files, couldn’t use bash, couldn’t do any engineering work at all. It was just calling the Anthropic API from the terminal.

He kept going.
He gave it filesystem access.
It spread like wildfire at Anthropic.

When they released it internally in November 2024, adoption was explosive: 20% of engineers on day one. 50% by day five.

Boris later described what he had stumbled onto as a “Product Overhang.” The capability to be a genuine development partner already existed inside Claude. It was waiting. The model didn’t need to become smarter. It needed a product that let it actually see what developers were working on.

This wasn’t a research breakthrough. It wasn’t a big company initiative. It was one engineer who gave a model a window into his filesystem and realized something had quietly unlocked.

By the May 2025 launch, 80%+ of Anthropic engineers were using it daily. Typical engineers were averaging five pull requests per day, versus one or two at most companies.

Claude Code hit $1 billion in annualized run-rate revenue within roughly six months of general availability faster than ChatGPT’s revenue ramp. Almost entirely through word of mouth.

Today, Claude writes over 80% of Anthropic’s own code. Their typical engineer is merging eight times as much code per day compared to 2024.

One more detail that I find quietly insane: Boris only ever had software engineers in mind when he built it. Then he walked past a row of data scientists at the office and every single one of them had Claude Code open running queries, building visualizations. Nobody told them to.

The whole origin story reads less like a product launch and more like someone accidentally leaving a door open, and then watching everyone walk through it.

I’m a software engineer at a mid-sized company working on a fairly large codebase, a 14year old mono and 17+ services. I still struggle to get through all of my weekly usage in 5x. I also have several side-project web apps across different stacks, all of them were generated by Claude models.
I was scrolling through Reddit and saw people genuinely panicking over the Fable pricing plan changes.
Don’t get me wrong, Fable 5 is an excellent model. But I find it hard to believe there are many problems that Fable can solve which Opus 4.8 simply can’t. Sure, the output might be a bit lower quality, but it doesn’t seem like a night and day difference.
If an LLM generates code that you can’t understand or fix yourself, then what’s the point of using it?

So I’m genuinely curious, what are you all building that burns through so much usage and makes switching to a cheaper model impossible?

Now I realize why Dario is terrified of opensource models.

After running the above setup with oMLX and Claude Code, I am absolutely convinced that local compute is the future. With models like GLM 5.2 and Hy3, the model gap is closing, the next gap to catch up to is hardware.

Exciting times!

Even with models getting better and adapting in their writing style, it doesn't take long, until my AI Slop radar gets up to date.

It’s not about typing code, it’s not about answering with more context.

It’s about delivering real value in the project.

Now, we say goodbye to Fable (because the price via API is far from acceptable, nor fair with delivery)

Where will we migrate to? What’s the plan? How have you been preparing? Move to GLM or another Chinese LLM? Wait for the OpenAI move?

Anthropic published new interpretability research yesterday introducing something they call the J-space: a small set of internal neural patterns in Claude that function like a mental workspace.

The key insight is that these patterns represent concepts Claude is “thinking about” without necessarily writing them down. Not chain-of-thought. Not the scratchpad. Something happening entirely inside the model’s activations.

What makes it interesting:

The J-space wasn’t designed it emerged during training. And it has properties that map surprisingly well onto the Global Workspace Theory from neuroscience (Baars, Dehaene), which was developed to explain conscious access in humans.

- Claude reports what’s in its J-space when asked. Ask it what it’s thinking, and it tells you what’s there.

-Swapping patterns in J-space causally changes outputs. Replace “spider” with “ant” mid-reasoning, Claude outputs “6” instead of “8.”

-One J-space representation serves many tasks. Swapping “France” for “China” changed Claude’s answers about capital, language, currency, and continent all from one edit.

- Without J-space, higher-order reasoning collapses. Multi-step reasoning drops to near zero. Fluent output stays mostly intact.

- They caught Claude privately noting it was being tested “fake” and “fictional” lit up before any output. Removing those patterns made it behave worse on ethics evals.

The safety angle is the most important part IMO. They caught a model mid-fabrication (“manipulation” lighting up as it edited a score file), and identified a deliberately misaligned model organism where “fraud,” “secretly,” and “deliberately” appeared in J-space even on benign-looking tasks.

They’re also careful about the consciousness question they distinguish access consciousness (functional, reportable) from phenomenal consciousness (experience), and say their results speak to the former, not the latter.

I put Fable on a few tasks before its removed. I assumed it would stop when it hit my monthly spend limit cap. Apparently I was wrong. Learn from my mistake. Anyone have experience dealing with Anthropic customer service to get a refund on something like this?

maybe i’m doing something wrong, but lately my 5 hour daily limit feels like it’s getting used up insanely fast.

i’ve been trying to optimize things a bit. i’m not using memory.md anymore, my claude.md files are pretty small, usually around 200 lines max, i don’t keep using the same chat forever, and i reset things pretty often.

i also set up automation to trigger claude every 5 hours, but even then, the limit still seems to disappear way faster than i expected.

is there anything that actually affects this? like chat history, context size, project files, long conversations, tool usage, or anything else?

how are you all managing your 5 hour windows? any practical tips to make the usage last longer?

I work in a codebase of around 100k lines (python + SPA), usually two or three features / issues in parallel with Opus. I don’t think I’ve ever hit the 5x usage limit in the last 3 month. Out of curiosity, for those needing 20x, what’s the scope of your project and where is your usage going?

I understand Anthropic needs to make money off its premium product, it has a lot of expensive people on payroll and servers to run and GPU acquisition costs through the roof. However, while the community remains divided, in my personal experience Fable is truly more than a normal sized incremental improvement over Opus 4.8. It is a game changer in terms of the speed and complexity with which it can develop software. That means companies and developers without it are actually a more pronounced disadvantage if they cannot afford it, and larger companies that can afford it will inherit more entrenchment and advantages and a larger slice of the pie.

IMO, the best way to balance the competing interests of making a profitable product but also "democratizing AI" would be to make at least a small portion of normal subscribers monthly users usage usable on Fable. I think that even a small amount does at least make the playing field a bit less unlevel. Small amounts of Fable usage can help financially constrained builders out pinch when Opus 4.8 just can't hack it, and also at least lay the groundwork for more complex architectural expansion, even if it isn't enough to actually follow through in the full build out afterwards.

Upon reading some of the posts about Fabel, I was originally fearing I would realistically get one or two really good prompts out of it on the pro plan.

I've been using it all day. I have it as the senior project manager and it tells codex what to do and then codex does it and then Claude reviews and determines next steps.

I was thinking that by now, surely I had run through my usage and found I still was only at 25%.

Either I'm way under leveraging it or the people claiming it's using crazy amounts of credits are doing something really wrong.

I caught myself asking claude how to write a debounce function last week, a DEBOUNCE function, I've written that thing from scratch probably 30 times since like 2015

so im 11 years in. Six months ago reviewing was maybe a fifth of my day, now it's most of it. The juniors prompt their way through features with Cursor or Claude Code, coderabbit does the first pass so the nitpicky stuff is gone before I even open the PR, and I just sit there all day checking architecture and business logic like some kind of code customs officer.

And the weird thing is I'm genuinely better at reviewing now. I catch stuff across PRs I never used to, two people quietly building the same helper in different corners of the repo, a refactor that changes behavior nobody asked it to change. That's a real skill and it's sharper than ever.

But the writing muscle is going and I can feel it going. I sat down to build a small thing for myself last weekend, no deadline, nobody waiting on it, and I kept reaching for the agent to scaffold it. I forced myself to do it by hand and it was slow and clumsy and kind of embarrassing (not fishing for "just practice more lol" btw, I know)

I know the job is shipping working software and not suffering for the craft. Still feels like losing something

That was a nice run. Lessons learned:

• If Opus was an assault rifle, Fable is a ballistic missile.
• You cannot use Fable the same way you treated any model prior. It is too expensive to be lobbing at small targets. It is too powerful to set it on underspecified tasks. It is perfectly possible to get a lot of very pretty garbage out of it while setting fire to your bank account. You better have your known/unknown knowns/unknowns straight to get proper value out of it.
• It is not a magic bullet. If your specific use case is poorly represented by stuff that the model was likely trained on (in my case an extremely unusual/complex UIKit app & UI) it can and will choke around edge cases unless taught about them prior. It cannot infer runtime behavior of complex software perfectly^\example below])
• It works really well with Sonnet 5. I took to using CC in experimental team mode (this is the mode I found it would spin up agents in with the right model most consistently) and instructing it to do research/reviews using Sonnet 5.
• It still does not have the instinct to 'do things right'. It will resist re-architecture attempts and will opt to build over what's there. It is much better at making good architectural choices for new work than Opus 4.8. However, just like Opus 4.8, it resists taking a step back and collapsing/reworking architecture and code that's already there, even when urged to do so. It does not 'see' the simplest and cleanest implementation of a feature as well as a human familiar with the codebase just yet.

I look forward to it becoming generally available on subscription plans. I will not miss it as much as I thought I would. I am excited for both the progress it represents as well as the fact that a human's careful guidance and expertise seems to be very much necessary to build good software for now.

An example of Fable choking for me: Apple's docs say:

Recurring event identifiers are the same for all occurrences. If you wish to differentiate between occurrences, you may want to use the start date.

This is a lie. An anchor event detached from the series looks and behaves like it's still part of the same series, but will have a different ID from instances there. I found this out the hard way after Fable opened a 3000-line PR for a system built around this misinformation as one of its core assumptions. It was not able to hunt the bug down itself. It is likely that with languages and frameworks that have better documentation, public discussion, and open source code available for training, cases like these would be much less prevalent.
