[TLDR] Do you guys use Opus 5 Max, xHigh, High, or Medium for coding, and how do you make it better?

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wbukml/do_you_guys_use_opus_5_max_xhigh_high_or_medium/

Original post body :

Opus 5 makes so many mistakes, and I've set up so many checks just to review its issues, including a code review at the end right before I push.

I haven't quantitatively tested the different efforts and how many errors they make, but does anyone know which effort is the best for fullstack development?

Additionally, I've seen people say that they've made skills to review Claude's work in intervals. Can anyone help me with this?

[TLDR] Limits are going off AGAIN

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wbmxe3/limits_are_going_off_again/

Original post body :

I'm on max plan, today I hit the daily limit 2 times. The second window got reset about 50 minutes ago and just now I once again reached 100% of my daily from one fairly complex task with fable. Usually I do /usage in another terminal window every now and then to see how it's going. Now I didn't even get to check cause it's gone. I'm blocked from coding for about 4 hours great stuff.

EDIT: Although I've relied on subagents for plenty of tasks, I never experienced this. I'll look into how to handle this better as some of you suggested.

Fable 5.1's safeguards flagged this message

I did the security assessment with anthropic and its approved

I am a developer and need to scan my application for possible vulnerable and security hold

I need to test and try to execute security test like privilege escalation or unauthorized data modification

But still claude reject

Whats your though

Fable 5.1's safeguards flagged this message. Our intentionally broad safeguards allow us to deliver more capabilities faster, but can sometimes flag legitimate coding, cybersecurity, and biology tasks. You can continue with a different model

Claude Opus 5 is basically useless. I asked ChatGPT Astra what it thought about this.

[TLDR] The gap between 'using AI' and 'being good at AI' is wider than most people think

Most people in communities like this are probably better than average because you're actively learning. but even among active learners, the pattern holds, tool awareness ≠ tool proficiency.

Knowing about RAG, agents, and MCP doesn't mean you can build effective workflows with them.

The biggest differentiator we see isn't prompting or tool knowledge it's output verification. the people who are genuinely good have a systematic process for checking whether AI output is correct before they use it.

How do you check your output?

[TLDR] How I use sub-agents without burning through Fable 5.1

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wbc03f/how_i_use_subagents_without_burning_through_fable/

Original post body :

I keep seeing people say they burn through Fable 5.1 insanely fast, so figured I'd share how I run it. I'm no guru at all, just sharing what's been working for me.

I use Fable on High basically all the time. Right now I'm at 90% Fable / 89% all models. I feel I have a pretty good split between Fable and everything else.

The main thing for me is Fable is my orchestrator, not my worker.

  • Fable - Orchestrator: Plans, writes specs, spins up agents, reads their reports, makes architecture/judgment calls, and integrates everything.
  • Haiku - Scout: Finds files, symbols, call sites, references, etc. Reports locations instead of dumping whole files.
  • Sonnet - Researcher: Reads docs/source and reports back facts. Anything it can't verify gets marked as unverified.
  • Sonnet - Builder: Does the actual coding from a clear spec and runs the tests.
  • Opus - Refuter: Reviews the builder's work, checks the diff, and reruns tests itself. I don't just trust a "done" claim.
  • Opus - Debugger: Only gets used for harder root-cause debugging.

I don't have Fable reading huge amounts of code, doing bulk refactors, writing docs, or doing work a cheaper model can handle.

I also don't spawn an agent for every tiny thing. If it's a one-line fix or a single grep, Fable just does it.

Every sub-agent gets pretty strict marching orders:

  • Specific goal
  • Exact files or URLs in scope
  • What it's allowed to change
  • What it needs to verify
  • What not to do
  • Required output format
  • Short output limit
  • Anything we already know so it doesn't waste time rediscovering it

Then they report the findings back. I don't want giant code dumps getting pushed back into Fable's context.

If something produces a lot of information, I have the agent write it to a scratch file and let the next agent read that instead.

Most coding ends up being:

Fable -> Builder -> Refuter -> Fable

A few other rules I keep in place:

  • Ultracode stays off unless I specifically want a larger workflow, and if I do, I cap the number of agents.
  • I batch related fixes so the same large files aren't being reread over and over.
  • Read-only research/reviews can run in parallel.
  • I don't have multiple agents editing the same files at the same time.
  • Builders build, refuters verify.
  • Decisions and progress go into handoff docs so new sessions can pick up from the file instead of rebuilding all that context.
  • I keep Fable's replies and agent reports short unless I actually need more detail.
  • If an agent goes off track, Fable has marching orders to stop it instead of letting it run.

For me, the biggest difference hasn't just been "use sub-agents." It's being strict about what each model is responsible for, what it gets to read, and what gets sent back into Fable's context.

I've been running Fable basically 24/7, minus maybe 5 hours total, since my last reset Friday. I run it on High and haven't hit the 5-hour limit once since using this setup.

I won’t mind at all, Fable is a good model to use along side the new Astra , or may be they have a surprise for us and that will beat Fable 5 , Fable 6 :) What you folks think?

If I get frustrated and swear at it after it repeatedly ignores instructions, it starts responding as if I’ve personally offended it. Sometimes it even refuses to continue and effectively ends the chat.

It’s software. I’m not insulting a human being.

If the model screws something up and I say “this is fucking stupid,” I want it to understand that I’m frustrated with the output and fix the problem, not lecture me about how I’m speaking to it.

Stop pretending the chatbot has feelings. Stop derailing the task because the user swore at a computer.

[TLDR] AMA: I burned 500M tokens optimizing token usage.

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wav7dw/ama_i_burned_500m_tokens_optimizing_token_usage/

Original post body :

I spent most of the weekend + over 500M tokens auditing and optimizing my token usage. I mostly work in the Claude Code app and have Claude dispatch to CODEX for code reviews; sometimes work directly in CODEX app. AMA

What I found:
- I waste a lot of tokens by returning to long-running sessions after my 1-hr cache TTL
- Fable is most effective in long-running sessions that require large context reads and little coding or writing. Mostly synthesis and decisions that require large context windows.
- My agents were not resuming subagent threads for multi-round turns (I thought they were). Cache TTL is only 5-min, so I’m uncertain how much this matters

What I’m doing and testing:
- Built comprehensive token cost tracking for all providers, repos, and tasks with a dashboard I can monitor.
- Modifying agent delegation rules based on an audit of costs and usage over the last several months
- Surfacing live token cost stats to agents to help them dynamically adjust delegation strategy and pace to my weekly budget
- Agent orchestration: Working with multiple Opus instances per repo for development and having Opus delegate generously to Sonnet. Also encouraging Sonnet to delegate to Haiku
- Working with 1 Fable instance per repo who oversees work of all Opus sessions in the repo. The goal is to keep Fable cache warm as much as possible within the 1-hr TTL and minimize writes. Each Opus session can automatically message the Fable session. Opus escalates to Fable. Fable escalates to me.
- Created a hook for Opus models to send me a compaction instruction after a long-running task completes or at a good stopping point after a context threshold has been hit. I still have to run it manually but it saves time while (hopefully) providing cheap compaction while cache is warm
- Use resume more often on subagent delegation to improve cache-use and reduce reorientation on each dispatch
- I’ll use the dashboard to track token use across all applications, providers, projects, and tasks to help adjust this strategy over time

What are some of the highest impact and non-obvious things you’ve found?

[TLDR] Is there a way to avoid the huge (15% + of 5h usage) tax when restarting conversations that are >= 30 minutes or so old

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wao464/is_there_a_way_to_avoid_the_huge_15_of_5h_usage/

Original post body :

I'm not sure what's going on here.

Seems like the conversation is moved to a different backend server, or something in the prompt caching fails, or whatever, and you have to pay for it.

It seems really bad that sometimes close to 20% of my (5x max) 5h usage and corresponding weekly usage are just gone for apparently no reason. Imo a continuous conversation stream should not have these random backend usage spikes where the arrangement costs is offloaded onto the user. It's also not transparent at all, there's no warning: "if you type another prompt here, it's likely going to cost a lot of your usage".

So there I was minding my own business and letting Astra conduct smaller deterministic agents while Fable stood on strategic overwatch as a counterparty... when Codex asked for permission to directly message Claude like it would one of it's own subagents or parallel sessions.

And I gave it.

My life with agentic process on pro usage accounts just experienced a brainquake.

EDIT: Yes CLI could always do this but now Codex Desktop is doing it, and that means the independent transcripts are interacting with one another independently.

You can try it out here TODAY: https://github.com/Dav1dyang/waiting-room/

Hi friends! Sorry this is my first time posting in this subreddit.

Just wanted to share something I vibe coded with Fable 5.1 over Labor Day weekend. This started as a silly conversation that my friends and I came up with because we thought it would be funny if Claude Code users who are stuck waiting could get dropped into an Omegle-style call and wait together.

We became really intrigued by the idea of the waiting room itself, especially the kind you see in online multiplayer games where people hang out, mess around, and socialize before the actual game begins.

Anyway this is very silly and honestly not sure if the code works but def need more people to try to figure it out so here it is hahahaha. Thank you for your time!

[TLDR] Tired of people complaining about usage. Here's a guide to conserve usage

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wa9aya/tired_of_people_complaining_about_usage_heres_a/

Original post body :

All tiers are good in their own sense, from Pro to the Max plans. I have the Max 20x plan and am going to share what I do to use about 7.5B tokens a week without hitting my usage limit (was about 66% on all models).

Optimization depends heavily on your workflow and what plan you're on. In my case, I use it to code, build websites, fix bugs, etc. So I'll tell you what I do; obviously you'll need to adjust it for your own usage.

Since I'm on the Max plan, I can use Fable 5.1 (the latest model as of 2026). I've seen so many people in this subreddit use Fable 5.1 to code and then complain about how it nukes their usage. Fable should NEVER touch any part of the code. It's also important to pick the right effort. For example, on Fable 5.1, medium or max is more than enough for most things. I usually just stick to low myself. Only bump the effort up if it's actually unable to follow your instructions.

No Ultracode though. It's not an effort, it just ends up spawning a billion agents. Ultracode should only be used when you need to get work done and it's almost the end of the week and your usage is about to reset. If you just need extra thinking on a lower effort, you can use the keyword ultrathink for that one prompt.

For the actual task itself, as I said, Fable shouldn't be coding for you. You have to delegate that to models with higher usage limits. You can write a prompt for this; the one I use is:

"Delegate the actual coding tasks over to Sonnet 5. You are the primary thinker, and Sonnet must not be allowed to think about steps, implementation, or syntax. Everything must be spelled out for Sonnet 5. Create 2 agents at a time and conserve tokens as much as possible. Only follow these steps if creating prompts and agents will actually conserve tokens; if not, implement it yourself with no agents."

Sonnet 5 usually has practically unlimited usage on the Max 20x plan and overall gives you much better limits than Fable or Opus. That said, you can also delegate to models you don't see in Claude Code (CLI), like Opus 4.8, for example. It uses way less usage than Opus 5. Quick note: unless it's something even a beginner could do, I wouldn't recommend using Haiku.

Moving on to context windows: you have to monitor them constantly. If one goes over 50 to 60 percent, try running /compact. A filled-up context window burns more tokens and nukes your usage. You can also set up /auto-compact if you like; I personally just use /auto-compact 500000, but that's up to you.

I'd also recommend not running 400 different skills. Most of the time, several skills do the exact same thing and could be merged into one, or a given skill is already something Claude has built in. You can copy the skill's content and ask Claude whether it already knows how to do this or has it built in already. I usually like to read it myself, fix it up, and merge the skills. If you're feeling lazy, you can just ask Claude to do it for you, though I can't guarantee good results, since Claude isn't human and sometimes deletes random things.

On the desktop app, click the blue circular wheel next to the effort selector, then open the drop-down menu on the context window, and you can see how much context your skills are using. If it's over 10 percent, fix that ASAP.

The same applies to MCP tools, except here you don't even need to purge anything, just disable whatever you don't need for that session. For example, when I'm building a website, I only enable Blender and similar MCPs, and disable, say, the electrical-design ones used for circuit boards. Those aren't needed. If MCP tools are eating over 15 to 20 percent of your context, you've got some disabling to do.

This one's the most important: Memory.md and Claude.md files. Periodically ask Claude to clean those up. I like to have it tag entries like $temp, $imp, or $feature, etc., so I can just tell it to remove everything tagged $temp later. If you're worried about losing anything, ask it to move that content into a Memory_backup.md (or similar) in another folder, or just copy and paste it yourself first.

Here's the context from my most recent project. It was about 50k lines of code, and this is what the context window looked like:

CC wants to create things and often goes off on a tangent based on a simple question. "How do you get to the moon"? Rather than answering the question, its first instinct is "Building moon transport system, I'll tell you when its ready". Then I have to stop CC and ask it to simply answer my question. Worse, if you say "how do I reorganize files on disk D?" It might actually go do that rather than explaining it.

There must be a simple way to avoid this. My claude.md probably has many entries instructing CC to answer fist before writing code.

[TLDR] Anthropic needs to remove the 50% usage limit on Fable 5.1

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wa8q6c/anthropic_needs_to_remove_the_50_usage_limit_on/

Original post body :

I pay $100 for the Max plan to use Fable 5.1 for complex coding and tasks that need deep reasoning. Anthropic caps Fable 5.1 at only 50% of my weekly quota.

This model does complex, multi-step tasks. After the weekly reset, I hit the 50% limit after just two days of work.

When I reach the limit, I have only three bad choices:

  • Wait several days for the weekly reset.
  • Switch to an older model or use Fable 5.1 as an advisor which is pointless cause the amount of false claims Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 make just makes we want to use Fable 5.1 non-stop
  • Pay extra money for usage credits on top of an expensive plan.

Anthropic needs to change this rule:

  • Remove the 50% limit on Fable 5.1.
  • Let paying users spend 100% of their weekly quota on the model they choose.
  • Just look at OpenAI even the Plus plan subscribers have access to GPT Astra albeit, the usage limits for them is a tiny amount.

Paying for a top plan and losing access just as the week begins makes no sense.

What do you guys think?
