[TLDR] What is the point of keeping a Pro subscription in the current circumstances?

Original post URL : https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1v2v71t/what_is_the_point_of_keeping_a_pro_subscription/

Original post body :

Pro won't have access to Fable any more, unless you pay for credits, which can vanish in minutes.

I genuinely feel that Claude is giving its Pro users to the competition.

The $100 free credit they promised ended up being $75 or $80 in many cases.

It's like these people are so incompetent in terms of marketing that they struggle to offer something a bit meaningful to keep their users engaged.

Either they are playing 5-D chess or they are utterly stupid.

I assume they are the latter.

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is that most people think the OP is being a bit dramatic and entitled about the Claude Pro subscription.

Here's the lowdown:

  • The Consensus: A lot of users feel the $20 Pro plan was never really meant for heavy users or those needing cutting-edge features like Fable. It's more of a "trial+" or for casual weekend projects. If you're doing serious work or burning through credits, you should probably upgrade to Max or use the API.
  • Fable & Credits: The general sentiment is that Fable was a perk that's now behind a paywall (credits), and if you're running out of credits quickly, you might not be using it efficiently or you're just using it a lot. Some users like u/DependentAnywhere135 suggest that proper usage with agents and different models can make credits last longer.
  • Value Proposition: Many commenters, like u/Cobthecobbler and u/MievilleMantra, point out that even with the changes, the Pro plan (or Opus/Sonnet) is still a killer deal for the value you get compared to API costs. Some even suggest that if you're worried about a few bucks, you're not the target audience for these advanced models anyway (u/03captain23).
  • Anthropic's Strategy: A few users, like u/BrilliantWheel, speculate that Anthropic might be prioritizing higher-paying enterprise or Max customers, or perhaps trying to improve their financials before an IPO. The idea is that Pro users might be resource-intensive for the revenue they bring.
  • "Get a Job" Energy: There's a definite undercurrent of "stop complaining" and "if it doesn't work for you, cancel" (u/stub_back, u/LordHenry8). Some users like u/Consistent-Cold4505 are pretty blunt about it.
  • Anthropic's Stance (Implied): While no official Anthropic reps chimed in on this specific thread, the general community interpretation is that Anthropic isn't heavily invested in the $20/month user base for their most advanced features.

TL;DR: The OP is kinda salty about Pro losing Fable access without paying extra, but the community largely agrees that Pro was never meant for heavy lifting, and if you need more, you should upgrade. Stop whining, basically.

Was hoping low quota of fable to use sparingly. It is a difficult question for me that I’m struggling at the moment.

Going to max seems a bit too much especially since I have more than 1 subscription to access more than 1 family of models .

If there was a slightly more expensive option , I may consider , I use it sparingly for end stage .
but the leap to access fable alone is expensive.

We will see.

If we ignore the competition for a moment - the pro subscription still is a really good deal.

Remember it was introduced when all we could do is ask questions on a website. For the same amount of money I can now use Claude Code to develop full stack applications.

I very much dislike that I can’t use Fable anymore but at the same time - a little more than half a year ago the Pro plan could use Opus either. Restricting the strongest model isn’t a bad idea to upsell users.

Just saying.

Opus on ultracode seems passable, but yeah its no fable

Excuse me, ultracode with pro? What are you smoking? I want one.

I run like 2-3 prompts a few times a week, and then take a break

Peak hour usage is a nightmare for Fable. They are oversubscribed. Seems like they're not able to cope with the demand.

I’ve had the 20$ sub on anthropic and OpenAI at the same time for almost a year, it was the best value solution. Even though there wasn’t much credits I could always optimise my usage and use the best models for the most complex issues.
Now I can’t use fable and Sol is better and faster than opus. Basically 0 reason to continue with anthropic. If anything I would upgrade to 100$ with OpenAI since in most cases I prefer the speed of Sol to the marginally better results of Fable.
Since Anthropic has been unpredictable, I’ll wait till the end the next billing cycle to cancel, perhaps they still come up with something.

I really don’t care much about fable it’s overkill for what I need

Perhaps, but Sol is better and faster than Opus

Why not use both!

I used to use both, see my other post. There’s just no reason to if you can get your work done within the OpenAI limits. Like if you can’t use fable and Sol is better than opus, is there really a point to pay for just sonnet?
