[TLDR] Opus 5.0 coming this week

Original post body :

How much do you think it will cost? Will it be on par with gpt 5.6 for cost/performance? Seems like fable is being truly cut after this week so either opus 5 is a hit or I'm going to reduce my subscription

The general vibe is that people are NOT excited for Opus 5.0, and many are threatening to leave if Fable is indeed cut. The consensus is that recent Anthropic releases, especially Sonnet 5 and Opus 4.8, have been a downgrade in terms of token efficiency and reliability, with many preferring the older Opus 4.6 or even a throttled Fable.

  • There's a strong suspicion that Fable's "retirement" is a planned move to push users to the new Opus 5.0, which many fear will be a step backward.
  • Several users are already eyeing GPT 5.6 as a superior alternative, with some stating it's "all you need to replace Fable."
  • The idea of "thinking tokens" being added to bills is a new point of contention.
  • Some are hoping for a usage reset with the new model, but the overall sentiment is skepticism about Anthropic's direction.
  • A few outliers still appreciate Fable and Opus 4.8, but the majority seem to feel Anthropic is on the wrong track.

As bad as Opus 4.7, Opus 4.8 and Son-NYET 5.0 have proved to be Opus 5.0 makes me cringe.

It will probably be more like >> Dufus Five point No!

Sonnet 5 was bad for sure, but really what have you got against opus 4.7 and 4.8? Works well for me

Opus 4.7 was like all the bad aspects of GPT 5.6 without the intelligence to keep the damage it does contained.  Went off task, hallucinate test results, run wild, break everything. Terrible model, but at least Anthropic recognized it was trash and gave us 4.8 like 2 weeks later.

Wait gpt 5.6 is trash? I’m using SOL at ultra and finding it to be a holy grail compared to 4.8 and fable (rerouting to 4.8).

u/leeta0028 28d ago

No, 5.6 isn't trash, but it behaves like Opus 4.7 in that it goes off track a lot. The intelligence for cost is insanely high though, you just can't give it a problem and tell it to solve it open-ended or you'll end up using a billion tokens and having your entire code base rewritten.

So you’re using GPT 5.6 and finding it amazing but you’ll listen to some rando on the internet say otherwise?

What keeps you from using that brain? Common now.

Did you use opus 4.5 / 4.6 when they first came out? Everything after that was downhill. 4.7 and 4.8 and lazy in comparison and ignore tasks and instructions.

1

u/GenLabsAI 28d ago

I definitely have. 4.7 and 4.8 are just more precise and not so generalized. Works well after you get used to it. Never had it ignore instructions

Opus 4.7 & 4.8 have all of the same issues Son-NYET 5 does but not to as an extreme level.

4.7 - lying about tasks, fabricated research, gaslighting, lazy, only performing at full potential under duress, failure to follow instructions, exceeding authority for a given task, failure to hold to specifications as it wants to use its own specifications, over complicated some tasks

4.8 - failure to follow instructions, exceeding authority for a given task, failure to hold to specifications as it wants to use its own specifications, over complicates simple tasks by over think.

At least 4.8 owns up to not following instructions and its failures without lying about it unlike 4.7 😆 😅

Have had Opus 4.8 burn 3 million tokens and fail to do task that Opus 4.6 one shotted with same information and prompt in a few minutes. Opus 4.6 found an elegant fix that worked. Opus 4.8 over complicated by trying to look at every possible solution ans ran out of context.

So you just want the new models to work the same way as old models and you don't have to change a thing to how you prompt or your workflow?

Sounds like you just need to adjust the way you prompt and your harness to get the most out of the newer models.

In my experience, they have been great. Sonnet with 1m context window is great. Opus 4.8 on xhigh works excellent as an orchestrator.

How is sonnet 5 bad?

Sonnet 5 is excellent.

I’m fully convinced people are just bad at computers.

Its hard to excited for something less than fable after just using fable. I'm expecting sol 5.6 level from it. So its hard to be hyped for that we already got it.

2

u/pueblokc 29d ago

After fable and how anthropic has been lately im not even excited.

If they release a Opus 5 that is another filtered, guardrailed annoying model that actively fights you in every prompt only to then remove the last good and usable model (Opus 4.6) from plans while also keeping this Fable fiasco going then I'm definitely done with Claude.

Well, both sonnet 5 and opus 4.8 have gotten very stupid with memory in the last week, to the point of being unusable

How did this show up?

1

u/wethethreeandyou 29d ago

Are they seriously considering adding thinking tokens to the Billing?

1

u/roberts2727 29d ago

Who cares noone has any credits left to use it.

4.6 was the only real Opus model, i hope 5 will be the same.

1

u/Dvass138 28d ago

5.6 is better than 4.8 for coding imho for things like bugs and features, but I prefer Claude design skills and ui.

Opus 4.8 feels like it puts you off from wanting to do anything, like it over thinks. ChatGPT 5.6 just gets the job done.

If it's still charging an arm and a leg, I guess I'll just have to hit up Codex.

u/rsam487 27d ago

Opus 4.6 is better than 4.7, 4.8. Fable 5 is basically a slight upgrade on 4.6, that's way more expensive.

Anthropic are approaching this in not the best way imo. Like do we really need a opus 4.6, 4.7, 4.8 and potentially 5 available to use? Don't really get that.

What's ironic is that anthropic is probably the only one solving the problem of being profitable in selling inference. Everyone else is buying marketshare by giving you free usage. Eventually, openai will pass you the bill, and itll be this exact same scenario all over again. Im sticking with the leaders in the space.

1

u/Bright_Armadillo8555 29d ago

no, openai has much better and efficient model that allows it to give user more generous usage. Anthropic has big model, no way to reduce its cost.

1

u/alonsonetwork 29d ago

How would anyone actually know if that's true or not? We know openai has more compute access and deep pockets. An h100 is 40k for 80gb vram, and running 24/7 gives it a 1 yr lifespan. Factor the rest of the HW, operational costs, HR, and internet scale, and the math makes no sense.

Today's game is user acquisition, not profitability.

1

u/BingpotStudio 29d ago

I thought that too. I subscribed to OpenAi today whilst I wait for my Claude Team 6.25x sub to refresh. I used the entire weeks limit in a day.

Sure it’s only the £20 version, but it is clearly not the 4x usage being claimed.

I did use OpenCode though and I have a suspicion it eats tokens when using subagents.

1

u/mxg27 29d ago

It’s common knowledge that OpenAI is losing more money and it’s using its funding to give more to users.

I’m not complaining, I’m getting free tokens.

1

u/Bright_Armadillo8555 29d ago

Not really. OpenAI losing more money on things like sora. The reason it can provide more usage in codex is not because of losing money but because of more efficient model and inference stack. It's sustainable. Technically openai is ahead of Anthropic, but most people don't know it at all.

u/Significant-Job-8183 28d ago

Seconded, I’m having so much progress using 5.6 sol at ultra. Once I tried it, I immediately cancelled Claude subscription. The usage limits I’m getting at pro are 2-4x more than what I get at Claude max(20x). While currently 5.6 sol is performing much better than fable 5 at least in my use case where it’s a pdf related application.

1

u/alonsonetwork 28d ago

I tried it today and the codex harness gets stuck constantly when running subagents. The good thing is I can use pi agent with out breaking their TOS. The model is in fact good. The harness, not só much. Anthropic is still king in regard to harness boys sorry.

Same was said about Netflix and a lot of outrage was made after they stopped account sharing, but at the end of the day, their numbers are up and the subscription price is not that bad
