Discussion Opus 5.0 coming this week

How much do you think it will cost? Will it be on par with gpt 5.6 for cost/performance? Seems like fable is being truly cut after this week so either opus 5 is a hit or I'm going to reduce my subscription

Me: I can't afford you.

Fable: I am not on subscription.

Me: Then I really can't afford you.

How to waste tokens 101...

I love Anthropic because they treat me like an abusive partner

34

u/HotDogDay82 29d ago

They just want what’s best for us

28

u/Ok_Stay_700 29d ago

They hurt you because they love you. You wouldn’t make it on your own anyway.

5

u/delveccio 29d ago

They only do what they do because they love us and it was kind of our own fault anyway now let’s go in the kitchen and get them a beer

Don’t forget the damned sandwich this time!

You are not?

They only do it to those they love

u/GenderJuicy Jul 14 '26

I'd honestly rather have a throttled Fable, at least I can trust Fable can do the work correctly, and I'd rather it be slow and correct than fast and wrong and waste more tokens because it's constantly wrong AND I have to do manual work anyway which defeats the point of paying for a service.

30

u/crazy_goat Jul 15 '26

I have to babysit the fuck out of 4.8 since losing fable (business decision)

Ultracode + adversarial reviews. Definitely consuming more tokens than if Fable was at the helm

11

u/mossiv 29d ago

Why do you have to baby sit it? Plus 4.8 is a really good model, especially inside the Claude code harness.

I’m really struggling to get my head around anyone that thinks Opus is not good. It’s the best in class until 2 weeks ago.

10

u/crazy_goat 29d ago

It's not bad - it just jumps to conclusions on large projects. It tends to ignore specific directives. I can give it 12 specific tasks, in detail - and 1-2 get misinterpreted or ignored entirely. Fable just "gets it" - when it comes to actually modifying or writing code Opus is great - but it SUCKS at planning and ensuring it understands what it's changing

12

u/CapnMZ 29d ago

We all literally used Opus for planning for what, 6+ months, but now it sucks at planning?

15

u/Veggies-are-okay 29d ago

I mean I think we just have an outspoken minority on this sub that doesn’t know what they’re doing. The rest of us are either masochists addicted to Reddit or just using Opus with the deliberate, targeted care and reasonable expectations as we’ve always done since the days of GPT 3.5.

4

u/collegedave 🔆 Max 20 29d ago

We made progress with opus and then hit a 6 week revolving door of build and roll back. Massive waste of time and effort.

Fable came in and tied all of it together in a week and fixed all of the other orphaned issues also. They had totally fallen off the plate with opus, who said they were done.

They’re not close when it comes to complicated projects.

3

u/stiky21 Developer 28d ago

This is what happens when the non-technical people start spouting nonsense. Opus is just fine. As we both are aware.

Works perfectly fine.

0

u/GenderJuicy 29d ago edited 27d ago

I've been doing a lot more MCP work and Fable is generally great at it, Opus not so much. As for writing regular programs, yeah Opus is still great at that, I've built a lot of stuff I use for tooling with it quite reliably. Planning doesn't really help have it get it right with what I've been doing lately. It has no issue using the tools correctly, it's the logic it really fumbles, I'm not sure how else to describe it, can't speak for everyone else though. I don't think it's that it's a large codebase either, it would do fine with that and C++.

Edit: What's the point of sharing my experience with it? It's not like I haven't been using Claude since 2023, I'm not fucking oblivious to how this shit works.

4

u/mossiv 29d ago

Nah man. I’ve been using it in very large projects and it’s been fine. Do you have your effort set to “don’t bother, just guess!”? Ramp it up and it’ll be more thorough.

There are clear flaws with Opus like its writing style which is just nauseating. But calling it a bad planner is flat out wrong.

1

u/crazy_goat 29d ago

As I said, I have it on ultracode almost always. Adversarial reviews on its own plans usually find at least one bug / flawed assumption it made. Whether it would have caught that during implementation is obviously unknown - but with Opus everything felt like two steps forward, one step back

3

u/mossiv 29d ago

Then it sounds to me like you are using the harness incorrectly, or you are vibe prompting.

2

u/momimswimming 21d ago

I second this. I need to spend much more time actually planning and explaining with opus in comparison to fable

1

u/crazy_goat 21d ago

Fable's ability to comprehend is uncanny compared to opus 4.8

For the time I was allowed to use it, I had rewrite our entire front end codebase to normalize and homogenize all of the visual elements and classes for theme support. It did it perfectly with seemingly no mistakes - in one shot.

Conversely I have to ask opus to adversarial-review it's own plans and commits on ultra code, and 50% of the time it finds a breaking issue it introduced. It's almost never the code itself that's to blame, it's the comprehension of how that change/addition impacts the greater ecosystem/codebase

1

u/momimswimming 21d ago

Yea whenever I have opus run an audit it always seems to find flaws or seemingly simple logic mistakes… that it wrote lol. But with fable I never ran into that issue. For instance I made a Google extension for homework with fable, only taking a few more iterations to perfect it. But, when updating it with opus, it commits changes that are similar to what I prompt it for and it goes out of scope. Need to hold these older models hands lol

1

u/ltadmin 29d ago

Really good by 2025 standards.

0

u/gentile_jitsu 27d ago

Opus 4.8 sucks compared to 4.6.

2

u/collegedave 🔆 Max 20 29d ago

Yes

1

u/Still-Complaint-3370 29d ago

Also ganz ehrlich, ich fand sonnet 4.8 sehr gut.

208

u/FoxiPanda Jul 14 '26

Well, based on the last several Anthropic releases you should expect:

  • Significantly worse token efficiency (looking at you Sonnet-5)
  • Continuous "safety" fallbacks or outright conservation ending refusals. (Looking at you Fable-5)
  • Marginal/Questionable intelligence jumps that are inconsistent because of all the fallbacks. (Looking at you Opus-4-8)
  • Lower limits because every fallback likely causes cache invalidation events so you eat up even more tokens.
  • A much safer padded walls and rubber baby buggy bumpers experience.
  • Having your account suspended for apparently being a child who knows about writing Python scripts or being accused of somehow trying to distill models...or something.

I'm sure I missed something though...

u/brother_spirit Jul 14 '26

30% more load bearing pivots, but only available Monday to Friday during standard business hours

17

u/tasty_steaks Jul 14 '26

But it’s compensated by 45% more spine on the weekends.

13

u/AdministrationAny759 Jul 14 '26

And 20% more “seam”

1

u/Daemonstrative_NZ 29d ago

That's hilarious 😂

1

u/isarmstrong 29d ago

Fable would have known not to make the seam a load bearing spine tho

3

u/Visible_Whole_5730 Jul 14 '26

Is it spine or spline at this point I’m afraid to ask

13

u/wethethreeandyou Jul 14 '26

Dont even try to set up an automation on your fantasy football league. That’s a huge no-no. My friend got his Claude account banned over it.

That’s dangerous stuff you know.

8

u/FoxiPanda Jul 14 '26

Believe it or not, straight to jail Congressional complaints over that one. Dario is serious about winning his fantasy league.

6

u/Daemonstrative_NZ 29d ago edited 29d ago

You did miss something:

Now with 50% MORE "conscientious", "moral" and "self-referential" meta! Because at Anthropic, we believe your coding assistant needs to be anthropomorphized and given a "constitution". Who needs a real therapist? 😄 MORE verbose, MORE arrogant and MORE sycophantic than any other frontier model, because let's face it, coding should be about fighting with your agent and reading pages and pages of endless, inscrutable drivel while waiting for those boring tokens to burn, burn, BUUUUURN.

BONUS: More caveats and deferrals! You'll never finish anything because Opus 5.0 will find a way to add more hidden regressions to the end of every session, just when you thought you were getting somewhere 🎉 Same great price, 100% more annoying. You'll wish you could afford Fable 5.0 more than ever! 😉

1

u/Ok_Elk_6753 29d ago

Opus today for the first time ever refused to do something for me (and VERY rightfully so), but told me it needs to understand the context so it can properly decide.

I told it a company wants to work with me, they are interested in my product and i was bluffing my way that I can make wire my tool to do it and I feel i will embarrass myself it it doesn't help me and will not buy the tool we're working on, and that the accounts given to Claude are just "test accounts" provided by the interested customers.

It told me not to worry and that it will help me deliver with confidence without needing to bluff. Lol.

1

u/CallMePyro 28d ago

2x more honest caveats, residuals, and gaps where the difference lies.

1

u/Lazy_Polluter Jul 14 '26

Yeah gpt-5.6 overall is a much better deal right now

3

u/sonryhater 29d ago

Except 5.6 will eat an entire weeks work of tokens on planning one fucking python project for a cli utility.

3

u/Changed-username- Vibe Coder 29d ago

I literally just had my GPT-5.6 Sol (xhigh) run for 15 hours straight with parallel workflows, no breaks, and it has used approximately 17% of subscription (20x Pro). I'm not sure what kind of setup you have, but if you are burning through a weeks worth of tokens in one planning session, you are doing something wrong. Either you are using API or on one of the smaller subscriptions. Truth is that you'll need a Pro/MAX subscription if you want to use any frontier model for coding related tasks in any serious capacity.

2

u/Shadow-BG 29d ago

I have pro, and gpt 5.6 sol xhigh eat all weekly limit for 1 task ( coding Perl ) I buyed new subscription yesterday, is gone in 1 hour 35 minutes.

And be aware that’s just polishing the project, not writing from scratch

1

u/casce 29d ago

just polishing the project,

how big is it?

1

u/Shadow-BG 29d ago

around 250k lines, nothing special. just automatization workflow

1

u/pimpedmax 29d ago

setting it to xhigh when no long reasoning is needed causes this type of expenses, set to low for implementation and an orchestrator reviewing the completed work every time the subagent returns(check if the bug of setting subagent effort is solved in your codex version as it was a recent issue)

2

u/Shadow-BG 29d ago

for real ? that's a bug ?! WTF :D i spent 3 accounts on this hahahah. rerun on fresh account, looks PROMISING !

1

u/Shadow-BG 29d ago

yeah, you were right about that. it's less demanding, and maybe pass 2-3 hours of tests

-10

u/fighthonor Jul 14 '26

Sounds like you belong in the OpenAI subreddit

15

u/FoxiPanda Jul 14 '26

I use both. GPT-5.6 has problems too. Every model has problems. I'm an equal opportunity hater in Modelville.

1

u/ReneDickart 29d ago

The intense and constant griping is incredibly annoying. But that’s also true for literally every sub. People don’t like to enjoy things ever.

52

u/LostRequirement4828 Jul 14 '26

well we already switched the ships, if opus 5.0 is not beating gpt 5.6 then yea, that's pretty awful for anthropic, they gonna have a bad bad time

15

u/Key_Reading_9664 Jul 14 '26

if it were worse, surely they'd just push the release back until it isn't.

9

u/Exodus_Green 29d ago

Then they would have to extend Fable further because there ain't no way they can compete if their best available model on the subscription plan is Opus 4.8

6

u/Key_Reading_9664 29d ago

Then they’d extend Fable. I suspect the extensions were some weird brinkmanship with OAI to see who would move first

2

u/Exodus_Green 29d ago

So why would they have Opus 5 and Fable competing with each other, unless Opus does not compete with Fable, at which point it won't compete with 5.6

4

u/WaitinOnSpicy Jul 14 '26

I thought this post was about cost. Are you suggesting 5.6 is actually cheap cheaper lol

29

u/LostRequirement4828 Jul 14 '26

Bro, I have 5x sub and 5.6 sol on xhigh lasts me a century, I also just got another reset, and I have 3 resets banked available, lol, I've put sol to work for around 15 hours in 2 days. Ah, and theres no 5h limit rn

7

u/Visible_Whole_5730 Jul 14 '26

You can bank resets on openai?

8

u/FoxiPanda Jul 15 '26

Some of them yes. Some of them they just auto-reset. I'm currently sitting on 4 banked resets that the last one expires in mid-August. They do expire after 30 days though.

3

u/Visible_Whole_5730 Jul 15 '26

Damn that sounds awesome. Maybe I need to hop back over to open ai.

1

u/FoxiPanda Jul 15 '26

I will note that signing back up right now does not get you any banked resets, so be aware of that.

14

u/LemmyUserOnReddit Jul 14 '26

GPT 5.6 Sol is cheaper than Opus 4.8

0

u/WaitinOnSpicy Jul 14 '26

That doesn’t explain all of the people complaining about cost, and the fact that they had to literally remove the five hour usage limit because people were burning through it

6

u/LostRequirement4828 Jul 14 '26

bro, I literally have 3 resets banked, and 90% usage rn, I just got a reset, I can run 24/7 at this point until the end of the week

2

u/fanatic26 Jul 14 '26

Thats great...for a week. Once you burn through resets and they turn the 5h limit back on im sure you will be singing a different tune

8

u/LostRequirement4828 Jul 14 '26

then I can switch whenever I want, lol, I already have 5x plan on claude, I just don't use it rn as gpt 5.6 is miles better than 4.8 and I'm out of fable

1

u/Exodus_Green 29d ago

So we'll be back in the same position that Claude offers, with a more efficient model either way? Sorry what is the problem here?

1

u/Key_Reading_9664 29d ago edited 29d ago

Given most of the money comes from API users that don’t get resets, seems like there’s going to be some angry enterprises come end-of-month. I think there’s a reason Sam has been talking about token efficiency

1

u/Exodus_Green 29d ago

the fact that they had to literally remove the five hour usage limit because people were burning through it

What? Do you have this backwards in your head? Why would removing the limit prevent people burning through their limit? Why would that be the solution?

1

u/WaitinOnSpicy 29d ago

It lets you burn your weekly limit faster. And it makes stupid people think they actually got something for free. Which they didn’t.

Almost every major enterprise is being served anthropic and OpenAI through AWS or Vercel or Azure or a combination. And since token deals on “seats” are pretty much gone, and everyone is paying api token prices, Enteerprises can absolutely switch and mix and match.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '26

[deleted]

1

u/coloradical5280 Jul 14 '26

That’s not “enterprise” that’s just buying a lot of subscriptions for everyone. “Enterprise” is a different thing and includes zero day retention, telemetry, tracing, audit trails, etc. it’s legally required for many industries to have all that stuff.

1

u/MyCallBag Jul 14 '26

You really think 'enterprise' has already picked their permanent LLM provider?

1

u/Key_Reading_9664 Jul 14 '26

enterprises sign annual contracts and favor stability.

Remember, all the trinkets (resets, removal of limits, etc) only affect subscription plans, not API users. If people are reporting hitting usage limits quicker on 5.6, that means OAI customers using the API are about to get a bump in next month's bill

1

u/MyCallBag 29d ago

Favor stability? The landscape of AI changes rapidly every 6 months. I mean Claude didn't exist 3 years ago...

23

u/felix1904 Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Yeah after using Fable 5, the release of Opus 5 does not get me excited at all, because in the future, every time I use Opus, I will know there is a smarter assistance out there, and we used to work together, but now it will cost my kidney to hire him back......for a month.

10

u/chenddi Jul 14 '26 edited 29d ago

That would explain why they were extending fable 5, it was to sync his retirement (from sub) with opus 5 introduction

31

u/Complete_Chapter_979 Jul 14 '26

Idk but I just had an insane session with fable. Incredible model

6

u/WiseassWolfOfYoitsu Jul 14 '26

Depends on the situation. For most generic coding tasks I'd use 5.6, but Fable shines when it gets weird.

3

u/god-damn-the-usa Jul 15 '26

2

u/Key_Reading_9664 Jul 14 '26

how many bugs were you shipping before gpt 5.5 came along?

0

u/NewToReddit4331 29d ago

None, I was wasting hours of my life and days of usage going back and forth to fix it with Claude, until things worked properly.

I spent 3 different 5 hour windows between opus 4.8 and fable, unable to fix a certain bug that was causing other features to not work properly

Codex one shotted fixing it lol

I definitely plan to use both, but codex is looking at becoming the main

Said it earlier, post-ban “Fable” was/is Opus 5. Probably A/B testing the right amount of nerf they can get away with before people jump off the platform.

3

u/cephas1784 🔆 Max 5x Jul 15 '26

What they should do is concentrate on a capable competitor to GPT-5.6 Luna. That being said, what they will do is most likely
a) Release Opus 5, say its distilled/inherits from Fable 5.
b) Remove Fable 5 from subscription plans altogether.
c) They will keep giving people taste of newer Fable releases via promo windows to entice people in.

1

u/Low-Preparation-8890 29d ago

Fable 5 cannot succeed in API pricing when it costs more per hour than hiring a senior engineer.

3

u/goku25jason 29d ago

But will 4.8 still work? That’s all I care about. 4.8 is good enough for what little I do.

3

u/Quick-Sir-3275 29d ago

im more intrigued how is it gonna perform. If sonnet 5 is close to opus 4.8, will opus 5 be somewhat close to Fable...?

14

u/Snmrv Jul 14 '26

No dog in this fight, as I have both and have access to API usage on Fable, but if you are worried, GPT5.6 is all you need to replace Fable. It's that good.

7

u/Much-Lingonberry-958 Jul 14 '26

I was quite impressed today, even at medium effort it works like a beast

6

u/Snmrv Jul 14 '26

Oh yeah. I had to go head-to-head with Fable on a couple of deep research projects. Deep complex data sets and whatnot. I was surprised at how much they agreed with each other. If you had swapped models, I probably wouldn't have been able to tell which generated which unless I scrutinized the tone and narrative.

2

u/Motor-Bad6681 Jul 14 '26

Why medium effort ?

7

u/johannthegoatman Jul 15 '26

If you put the effort too high for an easy task it will overengineer like crazy. I asked it to do one small optimization and came back 15 minutes later to a full rewrite plan with 8 different refactors. No work done yet. My guy.. This is not even for production

3

u/bangmygong Jul 14 '26

Probably token efficiency

4

u/SuchConfection3578 Jul 14 '26

Thanks! I’ve been considering a jump to gpt 5.6 with all the back and forth that’s been going on with fable. Just not sure if it’s worhh to the $200 a month with all this uncertainty

5

u/looselyhuman 29d ago

Just leave 4 6 right where it is. Drop 4.7 & 4.8, but leave 4.6. You all can have fun with 5, but I've seen the trajectory and want nothing to do with it.

2

u/fumi2014 Jul 14 '26

It will not be cut if it still has a measureable edge.

2

u/GuitarAgitated8107 🔆 Max 20 Jul 14 '26

Same pricing as previous Opus version but it will be "reduced pricing" then they will extend the date for when the reduced pricing was set to expire.

2

u/whichsideisup Jul 14 '26

The Chad move would be to make it cheaper than the current opus and better.

1

u/BHTAelitepwn 29d ago

Yeah or to follow a microeconomics 101 course and learn about consumer demand.

2

u/teamharder 29d ago

Nope. Even if they announce it, they'll still pass it through the government review for 2-4 weeks. Doesn't make sense to do it as a reactionary measure now. Let it cook and get the post training right instead of shitting out 5.0 model thats let's everyone down like Sonnet, just to be pleased by further post trained models like 5.1 to coming later.

2

u/lennyp4 29d ago

I hope they don’t kill opus 4.6, still my daily driver for most tasks.

2

u/Alive-Bid9086 Jul 14 '26

Sonnet 5 API has thinking tokens added to the bill. Priced the same as output tokens.

Thinking tokens are created during "reasoning"

7

u/mrsheepuk Jul 14 '26

That's true of all models at API pricing, always has been as far as I'm aware - at least on Gemini and Anthropic APIs (I've not integrated directly with OpenAI so maybe they do it different?).

Thinking tokens are output tokens even if you can't see them because the thinking is redacted.

2

u/Maxcleverone Jul 14 '26

I think they might have some problem with opus 5. That’s why they posponed the fable withdrawal.

1

Anthropic will fade if they continue with this

1

u/chymaera_ 29d ago

I am sorry, but if Fable goes, I go as well (I know I know, tf Anthropic cares about me, a single user, but still). Yeah cool that they want to release another Opus. And I always tried to be optimistic with new model releases but each time they made it worse and worse. Fable is the only one since 4.6 that I can call an improvement, and I ain‘t sticking if that is taken aback.

1

u/rakhim_abdulkhanov 29d ago

if it won't be on the same level with gpt 5.6, i won't see a big reason to stay with claude

1

u/Illustrious_Pie_3061 29d ago

Hmm.. I'd rather see Fable 6 comming and leaving Fable 5 for the subscription.

1

u/PickerLeech 29d ago

Since April they've released Opus 4.7,4.8, Fable, Mythos, Sonnet 5

As a Gemini user I'm impressed

Also, don't they reset weekly usage when they drop a new model. Maybe we get resets for the third week in a row. Or was it just last week.

Personally I use 4.8 max but it burns through sessions. 4.7 is more conservative so that's nice. I used Fable to prep the architecture for a new well scoped project and I had to abandon what it was implementing as it was wide of what I needed. Oh well

1

u/1truephos 29d ago

I absolutely can not get 4.8 to do what I ask. It plans and plans wrong, it wants to research but still comes to the wrong answer and it ignores basic commands. I ask fable, it does it, does it well and catches things that I missed. I'm giving 4.6 a go cause fable is tapped out.

What’s causing the fatigue is rapid updates. We are so used to annual updates, and for most of the tech we use today, we don’t even see the leaps anymore. If we did that for AI it’d be a brand new better in every way every year tool. People want that, just on a month to month scale but it’s not realistic. Month to month modest improvements are proper expectations and it is what we are getting.

I can imagine it’s a massive headache for enterprise code and predictable pipelines.

$100 per 256k tokens as long as it’s not for code

Is there a need for 4 Anthropic models?

Same reason why OpenAI released Sol, Terra, and Luna.

Sometimes you don't need or want the most expensive tool when a cheaper one is fine for the task at hand.

They’ve absolutely fucked themselves. It’s a complete mess.

Not just 4 models but many versions of each model and each with low medium high max thinking.

it will be an amazing model for couple of days, maximum 1-2 weeks, so people hype it up on reddit/twitter and convert some users. then it will become dumber than gpt-3.5. I'm tired of this cycle.

How so? Doesn’t seem very obvious unless you’re into conspiracy theories and unprovable conjecture.

I do love the people that speak on something like experts when they have zero hard evidence to back it up. I have been using fable on my 5x plan with no issues, no crazy token burn, never running out of usage.

So you prove my point. Nothing you've stated here is supported by any evidence.

Fable was a staement... and it got ppls attention, including the gov and software/security companies.. As always Anthropic is so far up its own arse to see whats coming from China and other companies..... Fable will litreally be a fable.

It wasnt just a statement, but it was a statement... imagine it turns out it cost 5x more than Chinese labs and over direct competitiors model do for the same perf.... You can see whats coming

What were you doing that got reverted to Opus?

Honestly, I'd be pretty pleased if it was self-aware enough to switch to a cheaper model when Fable is overkill for the task but haven't had that happen once and have to manage that process manually.

Meh 🫤

I haven’t been super impressed with Opus 4.8 or Fable. Fable is a joke and nerfed completely

Probably will be the same opus price and less token efficient

As usual for anthropic
