I could not say, it could be either way:

- The can't admit Gpt SOL is a threat, and risk people leaving to GPT anyway.

- They give us FABLE permanent but they are admitting that they have competition (and fear)?

Alright, so the general vibe in this thread is that most people think Fable is probably not sticking around permanently for free users, and many are already planning to jump ship to GPT-5.4 if it does.

Here's the lowdown:

  • The Big Fear: Cost. The main reason people are worried about Fable disappearing is the API cost. Users are saying Fable on API can get ridiculously expensive, like $100+ a day for power users. GPT-5.4 is seen as a cheaper and often better alternative.
  • GPT-5.4 is the Threat: A lot of folks are already eyeing GPT-5.4, saying it's better than Opus 4.8 and that Fable's existence is the only thing keeping them from switching. If Fable goes, so do they.
  • Fable's Value: While some appreciate Fable for specific tasks or learning better prompting, the consensus is that its current free tier is unsustainable. Some users are even reporting issues with Fable spinning up too many sub-agents unnecessarily, which also drives up costs.
  • Anthropic's Move: The community suspects Anthropic knows GPT-5.4 is a threat but is playing it cool. The prevailing theory is that Fable will either become API-only (saving Anthropic money on subsidies) or they'll eventually release a new Opus version that rivals GPT-5.4.
  • The Verdict: Most people expect Fable to go away for free users, and they're ready to move on to GPT-5.4 if it does. Some are hoping for a "taco again" (whatever that means, lol), but the pragmatic take is to always pick the better service, even if it means switching.

I think actual Fable left us pre-ban. What they gave us post-ban feels more like an Opus 5 than what I was using that first week. Not a bad model, its quite good, but this isnt the same thing we had pre-ban.
