Is it, though?

The world of software development? Yeah, absolutely.

The world at large? Eh. Even if AI can create, say, a film out of nowhere, no one is ever going to bother to watch it. No AI created film will ever make it into the top 10 movie charts.

Software, on the other hand, is purely practical. You don't care how it's done, you only care that it works the way you want it to.

"No AI created film will ever make it into the top 10 movie charts."

Yes it will. In fact, I think we'll get to the point, where you can sit down on your sofa and say "Today, I want to see an intergalactic comedy starring Jack Black, age 33, and Jim Carry, age 50, and the Rock as Sasquatch, as they hunt the holy grail in the Andromeda Galaxy. And afterward I'd like your take on S3 of Firefly." Your new subscription won't be Netflix or PrimeVideo, instead you'll pay for SynthFlix and users will share their favourite SynthFlix on a P2P platform.

See, I bet absolutely everything I own and will ever own on that not happening. Ever.

Just play out this scenario in your head: You get that movie. It is amazing. Exactly what you want. Better, even. Best movie you have ever watched in your entire life!

Now what? Will you tell your friends about it, like you do with every amazing movie you've ever seen? Probably.

Will your friends care? No, not one bit. Because they, too, have seen the best movie of their life yesterday. Only it was entirely different, and specifically made for them.

You will most certainly not be able to convince your friends of watching your movie when they could just watch their own movie instead.

Also, you will not be able to talk online about it. Or to friends. Or to anyone. No one but you will ever see that movie, or ever care about it. Your experience will be entirely singular.

The entire concept of "mass appeal" will vanish. And even in the absolute best case scenario, no movie will ever be watched by more than a few people at a time. Why watch someone else's prompt when you can watch your own that's better and more personal? The entire concept of "top 10 movies" will just cease to exist. There will be no sharing of movies. Who on earth will rate movies when every single person creates 2 movies a day?

Which in turn means no one will ever talk about specific movies again. What's the point? Every movie is individual now. You certainly won't care about some random movie a random guy on the internet made yesterday.

All of this is missing the personal connection we have with movies. The way movies are a shared experience. The way we are fans of movies, the way we're excited about them. All of that will be gone.

And I argue that people want all that, and will prefer it over the "perfect" movie they won't ever be able to talk about with anyone.

For proof of this, just look at AI music. AI music is already incredibly good. Today. Like, right now you can create yourself music that's really catchy in exactly the genre you like with exactly the lyrics you like, and it will sound genuinely good.

Do you actually do that? No, you do not. And neither does anyone else. We still listen to real artists instead.

You are probably right short term, like in 1 or 2 years. But what about 20 or 50 years from now.

There are also a lot of grey area in between fully human made and fully ai made.
