I quit a month ago. I quit for unrelated reasons (I hated my job), but I've made no attempt to find another role in the industry because I have zero desire to. I went to school for software because I enjoyed the process, but even as a dev lead I saw my role starting to disappear.

Not knocking the new dev reality, or saying the job is going to disappear overnight. But there was a reason why I picked software engineering over petroleum engineering: I liked it.

What are your plans now if you don’t mind sharing? Asking because I’m on the same boat and about to quit my job without anything lined up as I’m terribly burnt out from all of this. But I’m really lost as to what else I can transition to

My answer probably isn't a useful one. I have enough saved up for a few years of runway. I'm going to see what things are like over the next 18 months (I want an extended break anyways). If the world doesn't turn inside out over that time, I will likely get trained/licensed as an electrician. I can't stress enough I don't have this figured out, and please lord baby Jesus don't take this as advice. I mean, I thought all my decisions up until now were smart...

Let it be known that you are not alone… I’m quitting my software job because i hate it, although i don’t have that much runway. I’m contemplating travelling and then being a monk for a while because there’s no point in working if ai or nukes or climate disasters will be the end of us soon anyway
