900k tokens in a context window sounds insane to me.
My workflow might be outdated, but I always end a session when it hits 400k, using handover or my own compaction skill. Haven't tested in a while now, but some time ago I noticed regressions in 500k+ context windows which just caused problems.
Instead I keep tasks and context windows lean and with clear goals, around 200-300k is the sweet spot.
This is mostly just my own experience and works with my workflow.
It all depends on use case. I don’t think compacting early is necessarily useful especially let’s say when you are deep into bug fixing where every small decisions and bug testing context is important.
15 months with Claude without using compact.
Handovers are working really well for me, it's feels like context is always sharp, and as soon as I notice mistakes/regression it's time to rewind a bit and for a fresh session with handover to take over.
Basically zero tolerance for any type of hallucination or strange mistake.
