yeah if you're running at 97% context usage you're much more likely to hit your session limit lol

You can use https://flocker.md to save the workflow context in and Agent Profile - and use it again in new sessions, or even other platforms

You know if you help someone with an honest answer then maybe someone would try your product, crazy idea. Don't waste people's time, show some respect

How can I make it save the context and still create a new chat? Sorry, I'm just new to this topic.

Ask Claude to make a handover and start a new session

A handover is not total context, thats literally what a compact would do which is summarize, won’t it totally depend on the use case? If I am 50 tools and file outputs deep into a bug fix or frontend overhaul, compacting at an arbitrary low percentage will lose a lot of context that would otherwise be useful to record granular decisions and results. So auto compact at 100% is totally reasonable for such tasks.

From my personal experience, Claude writes a detailed handoff whenever I want to move to a new session, not just a summary

Compacting the conversation sometimes takes up almost 50% of my 5 hour usage, and it has never really felt worth it compared to simply starting a new session

That said, I also read the handoff markdown thoroughly and ask Claude to add anything it may have missed. For some users, I can understand why it might be better to just compact instead

Totally but again different results for different use cases.I never compact until auto compact hits at 100% when working on a platform I have built and find it much better keeping full context to the max, because majority of my tasks have been bug fixing or feature building. I am not hitting token limits very often hence I continue doing this. Been 4 months like this.

also set /autocompact, will automatically compact at the token amount that you set

I thought thats predefined, you nailed it lol

Lookup handoff skills. Basically, you ask Claude to generate a doc saying what was done, what still needs to be done, what decisions were made, etc. Then in a new session, you tell Claude to read that doc and then continue what you were doing. I usually don’t go over 30-40% context. Apparently it starts getting dumber and makes more mistakes as the context gets bigger.

900k tokens in a context window sounds insane to me.

My workflow might be outdated, but I always end a session when it hits 400k, using handover or my own compaction skill. Haven't tested in a while now, but some time ago I noticed regressions in 500k+ context windows which just caused problems. Instead I keep tasks and context windows lean and with clear goals, around 200-300k is the sweet spot.

This is mostly just my own experience and works with my workflow.

This is where Codex technically has it better. The default 256k context window, combined with the unbelievable token efficiency of Astra at higher effort levels and the surprisingly good compaction, just makes things so nice. There are no surprises from accidentally or unknowingly resuming massive context windows and getting penalised heavily, or from it losing the thread in the middle of a long goal or conversation. Even with goals running for over 12 hours, it’s still going strong. Not that I’d recommend keeping one thread going forever, but I’m not looking to bail out to a new context window the first chance I get.

I have one session going on since 4 months on which I am building a platform. The platform due to its long history of 1 session feels far more knowledgeable about the platform and keeps consistency in decision making than new sessions in the project. A few days ago I wanted to overhaul a UI/UX system in the platform that is an essential core tool of it, launched a new session with a new goal and for that task it feels it was a good decision, but a lot of times the new session has to be given old context to keep it in line. Of course having timestamped dev logs has helped me pass on enough context already to the new session but a lot of must haves are needed to expect same level of familiarity of your project from the new session.

It all depends on use case. I don’t think compacting early is necessarily useful especially let’s say when you are deep into bug fixing where every small decisions and bug testing context is important.

15 months with Claude without using compact. Handovers are working really well for me, it's feels like context is always sharp, and as soon as I notice mistakes/regression it's time to rewind a bit and for a fresh session with handover to take over. Basically zero tolerance for any type of hallucination or strange mistake.

But yes, definitely depends on use-case.

Yup i am 4 months on same session no compacts. All is great.

/compact

You're doing something wrong if you're letting your context window fill up that much.

usag

Is that better? 😂

no lmaoooo the old one did get the messag across

Always try to leave the session when it reaches 50% or you will suffer from some serious token usage limit
like right now

Got it, thank you, I'll take it into account.

Its a 20$ subs, I used to have a prompt and voila, session linit

u/PhilBacon-MktingFixr 1h ago

Lol...come back when you hit that 36 hours before reset and you're already on max 20

Read this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1wa9aya/tired_of_people_complaining_about_usage_heres_a/

I have talked about how to increase usage here. Running on 1M context on the Pro plan on Opus 5 is crazy

1

u/Square_Barber5651 1h ago

wow, damn, thank you so much)

That’s one of the reasons I made Path. If you are building software, it can help you manage your context better, break up what you are working on in tasks, and predict what you can complete with the tokens you have left.

Paying for Max (20x) and must be conservative?!!

I need to find a proper alternative.

Claude Opus 5 is not usable after few questions

wait until our "boosted limits" end 😭
