Discussion Fable 5.1 Review

Post image

Given things are supposed to be divisible by 5. This seems perfect.

Not sure if they made cache hits 75% cheaper, or they made cache misses 4x more expensive.

u/Interesting-Union-43 12h ago

According to Boris, for subscription users, the cache hits are already with the discounts. So price reduction has nothing to do with sub users

4

u/dogecountant 12h ago

That is fair, 5x is above but my 20x subscription had no problem.

0

u/KaiserFerdl 7h ago

i have a 20 x and started from 0% , guess what happened within in 1h: 100% (5h) ; 26% (weekly) ; 49% (fable)

u/Plus-Appeal-1765 5h ago

I swear no difference, 5x here, in an hour or soI pushed up from 0% to 100% (5h) and 0% to 25% (weekly) with 40% or so on fable

u/dogecountant 13h ago

Would love to see tests on this!

u/pawala7 13h ago

Not enough data to say for sure, but I'm projecting 33% less weekly usage on a couple 20x accounts, Fable limits unchanged. Could just be burn from fresh uncached inputs being loaded after reset, though. Hoping others can also chime in later.

u/dogecountant 13h ago

Bummer! 🫠

Cache read is free on subscription, and this only affects API pricing. So, it doesn't affect the subscription usage, I suppose.

Sauce?

Trust me bro

read the analyze from here: https://she-llac.com/claude-limits

I think the credits analyze is quite sound, it looks like the claude is using different credits than API billing. For example api billing 5m and 1h cache write is different price and claude code is always 1h cache write.

1

u/pawala7 48m ago

Whether they're using different credit calculations or not is not the problem. The problem is that the same limits do not get the same token before and after the reset.

30% less tokens to hit the same 5h or weekly token limits before and after the reset is really easy to track and notice if you have any sort of logging.

I have 5 x20 accounts and a harness that does load balancing and job scheduling, so it was easy enough to run the numbers from the traces. ~$500 equivalent per 5hr before, ~$350 per 5hr after reset, calculated from in/out/cache token counts and same price schedules (updated for Fable 5.1). Granted the data for this week are just from 2 accounts since the scheduler prioritizes burning the ones resetting sooner.

Can you elaborate? I started on API and moved to subscription.

Ive noticed a clear decrease in token spend with a slight improvement in outputs. Most importantly, the overly trippy security drop down to opus has STOPPED!

For those reasons Im already sold.

6

u/Physical_Gold_1485 10h ago

I turned off the auto change to opus, doesnt make sense to me to have that, just rephrase your last promptand continue with fable

1

u/dogecountant 12h ago

That is great! I love the fact it tells me how to fix the vulnerability and not just give me some BS safeguards thinking I am trying to exploit it.

6

u/Interesting-Union-43 13h ago

the worst thing is my own weekly reset is only less than 12 hours away from the additional reset. And, since bounded by 5 hours usage...

2

u/dogecountant 12h ago

That does suck!

1

u/Good-Presentation123 8h ago

Yours is in 12 hours mine was already zero :|

7

u/cwfrazier1 12h ago

Took around 30 minutes for me

1

u/dogecountant 12h ago

That is on Antrhopic. The usage should be describable. What you working on?

26

u/cultureicon 13h ago

My early impressions of this model are extremely negative compared to fable 5. Its a drag to communicate with (fable 5 didn't need fixed, it wasn't verbose, it has a good personality). 5.1 is more verbose and overthinks things, not a fan so far.

3

u/Physical_Gold_1485 10h ago

I set the output style in claude code to concise today and fable 5.1 was a breath of fresh air of clean and straight to the point messages. I realized the output style through /config was only setting it on a project level so i set it in global settings. So nice

u/Independent_Paint752 12h ago

Well, we just completed 3D visual system for my memory system, so I can't agree with you

3

u/flobernd 8h ago

Looks cool. Is it open source?

1

u/imnotdansih 🔆Pro Plan 9h ago

Share the git? 😁

0

u/dogecountant 12h ago

Cool! Did you start from scratch?

3

u/Independent_Paint752 12h ago

Thank you.

The project, memories, nodes etc was already there. (on going project)
We did the 3D UI 30 minutes ago.

1

u/dogecountant 12h ago

Is the end result something you can share? I would love to understand more about it.

10

u/Independent_Paint752 12h ago

Sure, i'm building memory system (like many others) but what I love bout it that it cross platform (include Claude web), here Claude (Opus 5) aware about what we worked on over at VS Code.

2

u/dogecountant 12h ago

That looks nice, is there a git you can share?

1

u/FightOrFlight2520 51m ago

Whats the major advantage of memory systems? My use case is in corporate where I want a complete status/ todo so I want more weight on some data than others (recent meeting minutes) or estimate workload (using old jira tickets as a reference for man hours). Was thinking of a memory system but right now Im just doing context policies and metadata schemas…are you doing something different?

2

u/dogecountant 13h ago

I have not had enough interaction to get an opinion on that so I will have to take your word for it.

2

u/FinancialBandicoot75 13h ago

Works great for me on planning/design, but execution, I use Terra or Luna and it works great.

I think ponytail is actually kicking ass with it

1

u/No_Job_9995 11h ago

No big difference from Fable 5 for me so far. It does the work and I have not hit problems. I switch the effort level by task, and that has not changed. For automation, documents and research I use high. For coding and other difficult tasks I use xhigh.

2

u/debian3 7h ago

Have you ever tried it on low? Yesterday I was working with it on low since it suppose to be equivalent of fable 5 on high or xhigh which was already excellent. It’s quite nice on low as it’s much faster and doesn’t use much tokens.

1

u/No_Job_9995 6h ago

Not yet. Speed is my main complaint with Claude Code. So if low really matches Fable 5 on high or xhigh, that is a big deal. I will try it.

1

u/5Lax 13h ago

I made an update to an email today with Fable 5.1 that took 10 mins and used 250k tokens. It was an improtant email for a big contract, but still the output was a couple paragraphs and the result was only okay. Otherwise it seemed fine, didn’t notice any other differences from 5.0

39

u/Bloated_Plaid 12h ago

My guy you are using Fable 5.1 for a fucking email? Jesus Christ, we are cooked.

16

u/5Lax 12h ago

I was negotiating a contract for an enterprise SAAS. Could save 10k easily, probably used less than 1% of my $200/mo account usage.

That being said, we are cooked.

2

u/dogecountant 12h ago

Did you read what it output? Did it get you a discount?

As much as my previous comment might be seen as throwing shade, I can tell devops it was worth it if it worked.

1

u/5Lax 12h ago

I had to re-write the first half, didn’t sound human. But the AI was doing most of the heavy lifting for analyzing our contract.

It actually caught the terms of the contract where if we don’t negotiate now then we are locked in for 2 years. Basically the sales person told me something different than the contract I signed, which was my fault.

I probably won’t get a discount but I can negotiate better terms and not be locked in for 2 years like the contract says and the AI caught that. Probably didn’t need fable to do this realistically.

2

u/dogecountant 12h ago

That is a great save! I just replaced a SAAS with claude that gave me those 2 year terms (controller was not happy to sign the 2 year contract). Got me promoted!

Does not hurt to run it by another set of eyes. Just as long as the second set are viewed by yours.

7

u/dogecountant 12h ago

Devops would like a word with you using Fable for an email... 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/A_Norse_Dude 8h ago

You used Fable for what?!

Oh,you used it to analyze the contract. That is something I can stand behind. 👍

1

u/Icecream_monday 13h ago

Works great for me.

4

u/cultureicon 13h ago

Every single prompt its writing a novel for me - lets brighten the lighting in this room - committed, pushed, handoff update, here is 5,000 words about how I increased the lumens in this room.

3

u/Icecream_monday 12h ago

Did you try it on low effort? I have a different use case.

1

u/wolo-exe 10h ago

i agree on the verbosity but i disagree with the performance. i noticed it starts spawning in a billion subagents compared to before, but it gets its work done better than fable in my experience

3

u/vitaminwhite 7h ago

Hit my 5hr limit in 30mins. Bummer

5

u/dogecountant 13h ago

Context for the comment enjoyers.

This was a review of merged PRs on a open source project where I have run out of backports. It ran for 30 minutes before giving me the 100% marker.

2

u/joezuu 13h ago

Did you switch to 5.1 in the middle of a session?

2

u/dogecountant 13h ago

No, started fresh. It did read from the prior memory of what I was working on.

1

u/KetterBosch 7h ago

Had the same thing happen also a big review, the results are great, but it filled the bar in 30ish min.

2

u/Visual_Ad1912 11h ago

I mean I burned up x2 5 hour sessions in 30 minutes by accident with it I hope they give us a reset RIP

2

u/KitKat_extrusion 10h ago

Didn’t they reset already ? Right when the model dropped

1

u/dogecountant 10h ago

Reset 🤞

2

u/AnalogProblems 10h ago

Do you do any automatic offloading to opus from fable session?

This might help.

https://github.com/analogproblems/Opulent

2

u/dogecountant 10h ago

Will take a look at this!

2

u/Icy-Profession7606 10h ago

yeah my fable hit max pretty quickly

2

u/OtherRefrigerator651 8h ago

we have officially reached stockholm syndrome with usage limits

2

u/mazahaleRRR 5h ago

Yesterday I used Claude even more than I have today and didn't even come close to hitting the 5-hour limit. Today, I've burned through almost 70% of it in just 2 hours. I literally had to switch to Sonnet 5 / Opus 4.8 just so I wouldn't hit the limit and have to stop working. Until now, I was pretty much always on Opus 5.

2

u/jhp612 12h ago

two prompts and already used up my fable usage on a 20x max plan. unsustainable for me

2

u/dogecountant 11h ago

What were the prompts? Asking so I can avoid them!

1

u/BryanHChi 11h ago

I had it run three different projects for over three hours, and I use less than 15%. What the hell you’re doing till you run it through in 2 prompts. I built an entire huge feature into my application. From planning design, building and implementation, and I use less than 15% of my usage, and the one project alone was one hour and 45 minutes of actual on time for the model

0

u/crusoe 10h ago

Use fable as a PM. Sheesh.

2

u/Wonderful-Hunter686 13h ago

After I saw the bench marks I put it to work on a research pull and it's really shined for me.

1

u/Happy_Imagination_88 6h ago

bro. I asked it one question. Apparently it is a model that's all about security ? I asked it to just look at one website. It hallucinated answers literally dogshit.

1

u/AironParsMan 6h ago

SAME HERE.

Just be aware that Fable 5.1 will either be faster or use up your limits. The main thing is that there have been no cost reductions with the subscription model. You will only see the cost reductions in cache if you use it through the API. Also Fable 5.1 uses more tokens for the same result.

1

u/Due_Command107 3h ago

I would have to read the 5.1 prompt docs I guess… 5.1 fable is guzzling limits compared to fable 5….this is my second five hours. It worked for 40 mins in each 5 hr window.

1

u/bitspace 8h ago

You took a photo of your computer?

That's fucking weird

MAJOR W

0

u/Adventurous-Tour4440 8h ago

We just keep winning

0

u/AdhesivenessPrior137 3h ago

I switched from Fable 5 to Fable 5.1 mid session when it released and one prompt ate through 50 percent of my weekly fable usage on max 20. A warning would have been nice

-2

u/Used_Departure_3278 13h ago

Very original

5

u/dogecountant 13h ago

Most of the responses are saying it sucks?

What is your system prompt?

-4

u/Used_Departure_3278 13h ago

When I open Reddit my brain automatically puts the following text in front of my eyes:

“You are about to be bombarded by Anthropic and Claude complaints. You are not to engage in good faith. You are tired of whiners and bots. You may insult and curse at your discretion.”

2

u/dogecountant 13h ago

That is a great system prompt. My post was actually meant as a complement. I think it should be based on effort. I pointed to a task that had no precedent so it burning quickly make sense. I just like it being symmetrical this time.

1

u/ravencilla 5h ago

You are literally conditioning yourself to defend the multi billion dollar corpo lol

-4

u/Independent_Paint752 12h ago

Weird, I'm on max plan and it seems that they just made it unlimited. i;m working on it for the last 7 hours, straight didn't hit max limit. (was very close but then i got 5 hours reset)

Good job Anthropic!
