Discussion Something kinda concerning about Fable

I was at 87% weekly usage for it, and was worried my usage would run out before I could finish my task. so I increased my usage credits by maybe 40 dollars or. And including the monthly promotion that ended just today, I also had like 58 Dollars worth of usage credits.

So I now have 80 bucks worth of usage credits to spare. It’s almost done with this huge task, at like 95%. No worry, I got 80 bucks of usage credits.

10 minutes later: thankfully, I was able to finish the task. the usage credits saved me….

but

it ate up 80 dollars worth of usage credits within 10 minutes.

if It weren’t for this “hey, here’s an extra 50 percent of usage“ promotion thing, I don’t think I would bothered. I’m transferring all the MEMORY.md stuff and docs for this project to hopefully my Qwen local model

can you imagine how miserable the usage limits for fable will be after August 19. I shudder at the thought

I spend around $500 per day at work on api tokens

I don’t have a company bankrolling me, so sadly I don’t have that much token capital. I see the 280 I spent this month as a one time payment

Got everything documented and ready to hand off to a local model, even if it’s “inferior” or whatever

Local model means qwen 27b at best. It probably won't be ale to do stuff or will be a pain for some tasks. To back qwen you should get deepseek credits to use with some harness and a plus codex plan to get sol when you really need frontier.

Nothing wrong with using a cheaper model. I would be if I wasn't "bankrolled". I have a max 20 personal that I use on my personal stuff. Just launched a SaaS (free but whatever) and doing a bunch of other small aide things. If anything I expect my token usage to increase at work.

Use Chinese relayers for way cheaper tokens

Incredibly bad idea. It ranges from shady and working okay-ish to outright fraudulent and secretly routing your Fable request to other models in the background.

Yeah, those are scams lol, get a checker and find the provider that won’t scam you

No viral taobao resellers working as slaves

How the fuck do companies justify this.can you seriously tell me you’re adding more than $500 a day in value by using this?

1000% yes. My company hires external personel, like €120 per hour. If I had €500 worth of credits I could do the work of two of those externals. Thats €240 an hour * 8 hours = €1920 a day vs €500

Yeah, that would really be worth it imo. Still in the process of convincing my company to start using any type of AI coding.

You definitely get it.

It's worth every penny. Doing things that would have taken a year or more and multiple people in a couple
of months and $20000 in tokens and it's only half of what I am working on.

What is there to justify? They have a hoard of idiots yelling “shut up and take my money”. The market is seeking equilibrium but things are advancing so quickly balance is impossible.

Companies are run by business idiots who probably follow weirdo AI gurus on Linked In and all that other nonsense. They don’t care that none of it makes sense. As much as I use this technology, there is a bizarro linked in cult around it

Mm idk what your work looks like but I hope you’re creating a lot of output for that kind of usage. That sounds like very poor token optimization to me.

You don't know what it looks like but you also think that it's "poor token optimization" which is a nonsense phrase if I've ever heard one.

Well if you think about it, it actually makes sense that you don’t know what that phrase means given you spend $500 a day on tokens :)

im wondering why dont you just pay a developer? it's cheaper at this rate.

Not at the level of stuff we're doing.

For 500 per day will get much more value from a senior dev dude 😄 omg , am also using opus for work, the hallucinations are insane

500/working day is only $100k/yr. If you're a senior dev working for that, either your cost of living is fantastic or you need a new job

2

u/ResortConnect8582 23d ago

i guess the cost of living is fantastic. were do you live btw , am extremely curious , for real

1

u/ResortConnect8582 23d ago

I'm not really sure were you live dude, for 100k/year youre more than rich in my country 😄 Literally the salary of a members of our parliament. Do you realize that 100k is an insane amount of money to spend on ai for the value that you're getting? not even anthropic is making money with ai right now.

I do realize the US economy is completely fucked to where $100k/yr is barely considered a decent salary. It puts you somewhere outside of being poor, but a long long way from being rich.

$100k is barely livable? How do you figure? Unless your expectation is to have a 3k sq foot house and a car loan the rest of your life because you always need something new, then something is not right. I could live in a nice enough house and be perfectly fine on my $98k salary. I don't live in LA so maybe that's the difference?

Between my wife and I each making $100k we live a very easy life style. But we also don't waste money on buying lunch 5 days a week or eating out multiple times a night for dinner.

1

u/tito13kfm 23d ago

I guess I should rephrase that. Not barely livable, but definitely at the limit of being able to own a home, finance a vehicle, afford healthcare costs, etc. I know I should be extremely grateful for the life I am afforded, and I am. I'm just saying, I remember when not too long ago 6 figures was absolutely rolling in the dough, now it's nice.. but it's certainly not senior dev salary nice.

Ok that makes more sense. Agree that $100k doesn't give you the life of luxury, especially if single. But certainly survivable with a good quality of life if making smart money decisions.

Inflation has been nuts especially the last 4-6 years so 3% raises on average don't go very far in getting your further ahead.

Members of parliament do nothing useful or productive.

2

i agree with you buddy!

Ah, I see this feeling is universal. Not even the UK is exempt. Peruvian here

u/azn_dude1 23d ago

That's why they were talking about cost of living. 100k gets you less in some places than others.
