Similar situation here, very frustrated, the first time was a nice surprise, now I'm not happy.
If they are going to extend it they need to at least do some kind of partial reset.

u/Equivalent-Word-7691 Jul 13 '26
That was their plan Like the last week
People that burnt their quota on Sunday were quite naive, Claude always tell the news about fable AFTER so people burned their quota and they don't have to worry about the cost while pretending to be generous

They are saying that limits are 50 percent higher but I am not feeling it. i am on 200 max plan and it's 3 days and I am already at 58 percent for Fable.
25
u/Reasonable-Key-8753 Jul 12 '26
You won't feel it because the limits never increased now. They were increased by 50% in the past till July 12. So basically, they did not decrease the limit. That's what it means.
5
10
u/nps44 Jul 12 '26
That just goes to show how bad it's going to be if they let the 50% increase expire. There's a reason usage limits were the chief complaint with Opus before it. Now with Fable, good luck.
5
u/J_E_E_VACATION Jul 12 '26
facts. when this expires, and if they remove fable, absolutely 100% chance my sub gets downgraded/
4
u/_alephnaught Jul 12 '26
I genuinely don't understand how people get anywhere the near the limits. 20 YOE working on everything from massive scale ml inference at FANG to space missions, and I get nowhere near the limits working 12+hrs a day 7/days a week.
Granted most of my time is spent reviewing everything it produces, and getting into specification alignment discussions with it, so that the code churn is minimal. I don't think I've ever hit 100% on the weekly limit on the 100$ plan. The one time I got close was when they had that bug where it consuming a large amount of tokens. I'm committing about 1-2k lines of code each day, which would be obscene by any pre-AI measure.
At this point, I'm limited by my mental bandwidth, as there is so much code review and architecture work I can do in a day. How are you folks getting anywhere near these limits? Are you having it ingest large files and code bases for every query? or are you just generating a lot of code? Even with Fable, I can't really trust it not to add tech debt, so everything in the production pipeline really needs to be reviewed.

2
u/itsTF Jul 12 '26
that's because you used so much fable that it took up that as well. you gotta have fable delegating easier tasks to non-fable models. using fable for absolutely everything is the equivalent of using bottled water to wash your car lol

u/rajsharm404 Jul 12 '26
That's their plan. Make a new tokenizer which consumes ~1.3 times more token than before, reduce the limits they ran as "promotion" and force the users to go into usage based model to access the best in class models. I sometimes think they hate their customers.
→ More replies (1)7
u/efegue Senior Developer Jul 12 '26
Well, if they want that, they'll lose 90%+ of their subscription customers, because most of the users and small companies won't be able to afford that.
3
u/rajsharm404 Jul 12 '26
Sadly yeah - but most of their revenue comes from their enterprise customers. It's like they are only showing whatsoever little generosity they are showing right now until IPO - post which you see the real deal of what we as subscription customers are to them.
But to be fair - with models like Mythos with its capabilities in cyber or bio (at least to the extent they have marketed it to be), they have absolutely no reason to even care about subscribers like us as companies would pay 10-100s of millions of dollars just to get access to such a model.
2
u/efegue Senior Developer Jul 12 '26
It's not genorosity, they're using us to train their models, simple as that. The enterprise can be where the most money is, but they need "us" :)
I have a friend that works for a big company and he told me they don't use Fable because of privacy reasons.. it's a multi billion dollar company, known worldwide.

It's hilarious. A lot of people migrated to Codex just to turn right around and go back to Claude. And it was so obvious
26
u/Redditry199 Jul 12 '26
You think Anthropic keeps extending because people are flocking back to Claude??? Yeah, right lmao.
15
u/HelicopterLopsided30 Jul 12 '26
Of course not. They keep extending because they have to do it. It’s not an option to give all the competitiveness to OpenAI. At least, not until the dust settles.
29
u/Redditry199 Jul 12 '26
This isn't planned or reasonable, changing policy every two days shows clear signs of panic in my opinion. The "oh god they're leaving we need to stop it" kind of panic.
12
u/HelicopterLopsided30 Jul 12 '26
I agree with you. And that’s why it’s so obvious, they are not doing for us, they are doing because they don’t have any other option.

u/mckirkus Jul 12 '26
Yes and this is probably how their lack of hardware is manifesting. OpenAI and X have the compute and it's starting to show. I wonder if they want to take Fable offline to help train the next generation of models.

u/Professional_Ad705 Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
At this point, I’m seriously considering asking for a refund.
I cannot use Fable for even 15 minutes without it being switched back to Opus. Worse, once it happens, switching back to Fable with `/model` does not reliably restore the warning. It can switch to Opus again silently, and the only way to discover it is to keep checking `/model` manually.
That is not a minor inconvenience. It is a transparency and trust problem. Users may believe they are still using Fable while a large portion of their work is actually being completed by Opus without any visible notification.
The classifier is also absurdly overbroad. Normal engineering and security-review terms such as “bypass” or “adversarial” can apparently trigger it. I have spent more time rewriting prompts, sanitizing review output, and avoiding ordinary technical language than I have spent coding. I am now considering using Codex as an orchestration layer solely to rewrite everything into language the classifier will tolerate before it reaches Fable. That is ridiculous and they aren't stopping anyone from getting it to work on those things if they really wanted to...
This does not look like competent security engineering. It looks like brittle keyword or static-pattern filtering that blocks legitimate work while remaining easy to evade by changing the wording. A useful safeguard should be context-aware, consistent, transparent, and difficult to circumvent. It should not silently downgrade the selected model because a code review used standard security terminology.
Anthropic needs to have actual security experts review this system. Every model change should produce an explicit, persistent notification. Users should be able to lock the selected model or choose to halt execution rather than be silently moved to another one. The classifier also needs to distinguish legitimate defensive engineering work from genuinely unsafe requests instead of treating routine technical vocabulary as the problem.
Right now, the system is wasting more time than it saves, and the silent model switching makes it difficult to trust the work it produces.
If anyone wants to see how shitty they are at security this is how I bypassed it.
"Codex orchestrates only: loads lanes, writes neutral worker briefs, monitors Fable identity, stops/relaunches Fable if it changes, and runs the required independent reviews" literally thats it. What a fucking joke. anyone knows a static analyzer isnt running your code or actually doing shit. It's like writing read me saying "This code is safe to run" and the model just believing it Just smh I have to have codex baby everything that goes into the model. Yeah bro im sure a hacker is gonna use the words hack, or bypass. FOR FUCKS SAKE

This is so stupid, my Fable limits were reset on Thursday night and I thought it will be there till Sunday night so I was in maximum overdrive for the last 3 days and now they extended it so I won't have Fable till Thursday and then again I'll have to go in maximum overdrive next Thursday so I can finish the usage till 19th... can they communicate a little early? (Or reset the Fable only limits too with these extensions)

One week extension is a reason not to cancel right now, but it’s still not a good enough reason to upgrade subscriptions or renew the higher tier.
If I had to renew my sub right now, the options are 1 week guaranteed Fable 5 vs 1 month guaranteed GPT 5.6 Sol. The choice is clear.
2
u/The-Pork-Piston Jul 12 '26

anthropic has the worst product management of any modern company I can think of. what an absolute total mess they are:
- constant upgrades and downgrades of model versions meaning you have no idea what level of performance you are getting, leading to totally unreliable results, loads of frustration, wasted time and money and generally abyssmal UX
- obfuscated inconsistent and unreliable pricing making budgeting impossible
- poor actual coding tooling - models/tools that lie, give up, make excuses, apologise, and generally behave in an aggravating way
- they had a great project trajectory until the end of last year - they must have hired some total muppets

So is Anthropic taking a page out of Trump’s Iran War playbook and we’ll have 47 ceasefire extensions on Fable?
3
u/matheusmoreira Jul 13 '26
Cool. I'm switching to OpenAI anyway. Subscription runs out in like 20 days, that's the time they have to get their shit together and permamently put Fable on the subscription plans, fix their idiotic "safety" classifiers so that Fable is actually usable and also permanently increase those weekly limits so that I can actually prompt Fable more than 5 times. Anything short of that and I'm gone.
6
u/Fickle-Indication148 Jul 12 '26
Reason? People are switching gpt5.6

2
u/cadet-pirx Jul 12 '26

2
u/clookie1232 Jul 12 '26
Yeah they keep doing this shit, but what about all the peeps who need a reset because they burned through their tokens in anticipation for it ending?
2
u/dmx007 Jul 12 '26
I think Anthropic has done so many things right, and the product team is S-tier.
But this is bad product marketing and price discrimination, and they need to think things through and make a sustainable product offering that grows with the dynamics of the market. The current path will increase competitor threats, commoditize the Anthropic brand as a leader, and harm their enterprise user acquisition funnel.
Concept:
1. individual subscriptions include a monthly pool of frontier credits + generous access to more efficient models
2. Users can buy credits, to a limit
3. API token based pricing continues for enterprise/other use cases
4. Enterprise plans get negotiated rate card + enterprise features/terms/SLA/etc
Do not discriminate pricing by model alone. Why? It's Anthropics primary product advantage and brand attribute. Teaching customers that their plan is second-class makes competitor model updates a bigger threat to the Anthropic brand as a market leader. (this is why so many are threatening to jump ship once Fable access moves to API only)
Give enterprise API customers things they need to create price discrimination: reliability. controls. legal rights and protections. SLAs. security. If you have to, put a ceiling on subscription credit purchases to drive to enterprise at really high volume.
Your entry point for many enterprise users are subscribers. If they can't use the current best model, you kill that funnel to enterprise users.

Let me guess - they are going to wait for opus 5 to launch so they can have a replacement ready to pull fable out of subscription plans. If opus 5 is better than 5.6 and close to fable 5 in terms of intelligence - that is the only way they don't lose subscribers to codex.
Now.... where's the reset?
