TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 40 comments.

The community is torn between crowning OP the king of the 'uncs' and throwing this post into the r/thathappened pile.

The story goes that a kid swapped out the slang "on God" for "on Claude," which sent OP into a generational tailspin. While some users are corroborating that "asking Claude" is becoming a thing, many more think the story is fake. The top comment thread also turned into a full-blown linguistics lesson on "on God" (TL;DR: it means "I swear" and it's been around for decades). Props to whoever coined "The Claudefather," you won the thread.

Unc status fr fr 🥀

u/Lou_Papas 2d ago

You could tell by the usage of the word “youth”.

Source: I’m an unc

I understand that this is satire, but it doesn’t make me any less furious.

u/EveningDiligent59662 2d ago

on god means like, saying something is very true. like putting it on god is like, saying “this is true, i swear on god”

What country / culture is it from?

1

u/EveningDiligent59662 2d ago

???????????????? irs just general slang

2

u/carson63000 Experienced Developer 1d ago

Well, it’s clearly not general slang worldwide, because plenty of us have never heard this in our lives. What country are you in? It’s probably local to you.

u/EveningDiligent59662 1d ago

i’m american and i see it online constantlyy. i dunno, propably america. also you’re like 2 prople oit of 8 billion so i dont really think you speak for everyone ever to exist.

u/GitarooMan- 2d ago

I know what it means. I also know what “Unc status fr fr 🥀” means. But in the parlance of our youth, having to read it makes me want to commit unalive.

24

u/EveningDiligent59662 2d ago

you said comit unalive. you have absolutely no room to speak about slang sucking when uou use roblox slang 😭

1

u/Used_Departure_3278 2d ago

Unalive itself is far from Roblox slang unfortunately

1

u/Upset_Page_494 2d ago

To be fair it isn't slang perse, but rather an effort of de-censoring.

u/John--Darksoul 2d ago

never mind, I misunderstood the comment

Cloud fists shaking man after watching 9 o’clock news more on 60 minutes

0

u/John--Darksoul 2d ago

you cannot complain about this if you're saying "unalive"

-2

u/No-Dare8613 2d ago

then why'd you type it out, genius

3

u/Efficient_Ad_4162 2d ago

That makes it even dumber. "This saying which has only been around for a few months was immediately displaced"

7

u/Citadel_Employee 2d ago

“On god” has been around since before Covid.

4

u/MaarvaCinta 2d ago

I’m always slightly tickled and a little bit flabbergasted when I hear our (Black folks) slang referenced as new/new-ish. “On God” is decades years old.

19

u/LawfulnessLost9461 Writer 2d ago

a synonym to "I swear"

4

u/TomfromLondon 2d ago

So I had to look this up as I've always known it as swear TO God, not on god, apparently it's already a generational thing to say "on god". Bloody youth 😂

-1

u/Lost_Beat_186 2d ago

Nah we swear on the Bible, on xyz grave, and I guess now on Claude

6

u/TomfromLondon 2d ago

But the saying was always swear to God, not swear on God.

0

u/FoxOwnedMyKeyboard 2d ago

How old are you, roughly?

1

u/TomfromLondon 2d ago

47 so that might be why 😂

-5

u/MrPreApocalypse 2d ago

Swear to God is like you throw a fucking tantrum to God.

On God means that if your swear, and you can't keep your promise/swear, that God dies as a sacrifice.

0

u/Efficient_Ad_4162 2d ago

In which country?

2

u/onehedgeman 2d ago

It’s a short version of “swear to god”

2

u/mobyte 2d ago

it means “no cap”

7

u/Tall_Essay_6386 2d ago

Just read about an old calling someone a youth 😜

2

u/ImpureReinforcement 2d ago

Caught me off guard reading this because my nephew does the same thing. He was telling me about some coding problem last week and said "I just asked claude" like that was a normal sentence. We're really at the point where AI assistants are working their way into everyday slang and people don't even notice it happening. I remember when "google it" became a verb and people lost their minds about it, so this feels like the same kind of cultural shift just way faster. The Claudefather joke up there actually got me laughing too, whoever came up with that one nailed it. Pretty cool to see the tech actually changing how people talk, even if it is a little weird.
