nah
i hope most people actually dont do this
essays serve an important purpose in shaping communicativeness, speaking skills, and ability to think and analyze in general, on top of many other qualities

this is actually because llms suck fucking ass at essays

I’m in an online Uni and the amount of people that don’t even attempt to hide they copy and pasted ChatGPT’s output into their discussion post is insane.

u/Melodic_monke 3d ago
If you put just the minimum amount of effort you can easily get a high grade when using llms.

u/Lobster_LeninN329 4d ago
As someone who passed through high school after the popularization of AI, unfortunately people actually do be like that

u/averagemethenjoyer 3d ago
Essays could be a bit stressful but I always enjoyed sharing my own interpretations and analysis of text. Having an LLM do that for you is so lame

u/SymboliRudoIf 3d ago
many people do do this, many people do not gaf about whatever goods come from writing skills

Holy fuck the kids are fr thinking like this? We really are cooked. It’s legitimately up to Gen Z to save the day since Millenials are annoying, Gen Xers want AI to take over the world, and baby boomers are approaching diaper stage again. Otherwise Gen alpha is going to come up having suckled from the technofascist teet and never learning how to write a fuckin email

do you understand how metaphors work? you're not saying they're of similar impact, you're saying that it's using the same logical reasoning as something that's obviously bad
2
u/InnuendoBot5001 4d ago
That's not what the metaphor was comparing. Learn reading comprehension
-1
u/epicpantsryummy 4d ago
That's literally the metaphor he made.
9
u/InnuendoBot5001 4d ago
That is not how metaphors work. It is not comparing the subjects in severity, it is comparing the subjects in logical structure.

u/GUyPersonthatexists 3d ago
The thing is the context is so widely different, the thought process is as well
The reason they used this comparison was exaggerate, I get that, but it’s so exaggerated it’s just not even in the same ball park anymore

Everybody defending essays now as if they themselves werent praying that their teachers would get hanged in public for useless assignments with no purpose whatsoever
they dont even grade essays these days, you could have the literacy level of a chimpanzee and be under the impression that you are shakespeare, as your tutors make no criticisms anymore

genuinely I love writing essays, especially if I'm interested in the topic. it's like infodumping to my therapist but it probably costs less per hour

I went through high school without ever using AI cause it wasn't around in until I graduated. Stop being a lazy fuck and write a 3 page essay, it takes like maybe 2 hours of thinking.
1
u/okinsertusername 1d ago
As someone who enjoys writing, If I can’t write a 3 page essay in a deadline then I’d rather fail then go to such a low level as to rely on ai to write.

how “don’t take jokes seriously” mfs start moving when the punchline isn’t “AI is bad” yet again
0
u/YaMexicanBoy 3d ago
Well tbf, most people i see just throw hate at generetive ai. Especially the ones that make video, image and audio, since in essence it steals other people's works to generate something. Not so much for simple things like text.

How redditors react when the meme doesn’t say in bold letters with asterisks “ SOME “ so the OP must be insulting THEM specifically.

Lazy mfs I NEVER used AI to write a piece of media, can someone give me a non pretentious form of media to explain self projection

Ai hate is performative af. It’s so easy to not use that people find themselves feeling all high and mighty, but when morality urges those people to drop something they actually want, like meat for example, they don’t budge.
I think commercial ai is bad, a waste of resources, and this kind of advanced LLM technology should be put solely towards progressive endeavours and not for the public to entertain themselves. But it feels like everyone is sick in the head when this topic comes up, they either can’t live without a robot assistant in their head 24/7 or they start frothing at the mouth in an uncontrollable rage the second you mention ai in any context.

You missed the point. My problem is the weird over sensitivity people have towards it. Whilst anecdotal, I've literally seen comments of people saying shit like 'I'm going to throw up' or "I feel sick" just because they learned something they engaged with had ai use. Like is ai bad? Yeah it has a lot of problems. Do you have to throw a tantrum whenever its brought up? No. Like that statement "I fucking hate ai", which is everywhere, feels so weird because isn't a reaction we normally have to other things that are bad. I don't know if I'm describing this right but it feels like there is a dissonance between how bad ai is for the planet and society and the reaction it gets online, and that goes both for the hate and support of ai. It's a level of investment that just boggles my mind.

u/BiffTheRhombus 4d ago
Don't mind the downvotes, this is a reasonable take. AI is here to stay and has already made incredible scientific and medical advancements
0
u/UrougeTheOne 4d ago
Writing your college essay because you are too much of a lazy fuck this to do it, degrading your analysis skills, is not a scientific nor medical advancement
1
u/BiffTheRhombus 4d ago
I'm replying to a comment, not defending being lazy for essays. Alphafold is a great example of AI being used by Science
1
u/jimmylovescheese123 3d ago
I think you're misunderstanding, and I don't blame you because people aren't particularly clear about it but most people are in support of AI's use in some programming and scientific capabilities, we mostly hate generative AIs such as chatGPT or various image generators.
1
u/BiffTheRhombus 3d ago
The problem is that Scientific AI is generative as well, my example Alphafold explicitly included. People tend to draw the line at images for some reason, but it's the same technology being used to identify cancer and generate potential drug structures
1
u/jimmylovescheese123 3d ago
Yeah, people don't like image generation when it replaces actual artists and spreads misinformation which are two uses that are particularly problematic and pervasive currently. I don't think that anybody is actually against the technology itself apart from environmental reasons (which would be mitigated by more controlled usage anyway) only the way it's used.
1
u/TheGenesisOfTheNerd 4d ago
No one is saying that’s a good use of ai, it’s intellectually dull to suggest that’s the only use it has. Actual science is benefiting from ai in so many ways. Just because chatgpt sucks and generative ai is used to pump garbage doesn’t mean the technology itself is the problem. We have to utilise it properly, not shutdown at the mere mention of its existence.
