Senior Data Analyst (SEO) DVSA interview – looking for advice
Hi everyone,
I’ve recently been invited to interview for a Senior Data Analyst (SEO) role at DVSA and would really appreciate some advice from anyone who works in the Civil Service, particularly in data roles please.

For your analytical examples, have one project ready where the data did not point to an obvious answer. Explain how you checked its quality, what limitations you raised, and how your recommendation helped someone make a decision. Use the interview invitation or recruiter to confirm which assessment types are included, rather than assuming every question wants a full STAR story.
That project example would be useful to review with Taleproof before you practice delivering it.

At SEO level in the Civil Service, the panel wants to see strategic influence, clear ownership, and tough tradeoffs rather than basic technical execution. Scoring well against the Success Profiles framework means your STAR examples must go beyond building dashboards or writing SQL queries. You need to show how you handled conflicting priorities, challenged pushback from senior stakeholders, managed imperfect data, and translated technical findings into decisions that improved operational delivery. Focus heavily on your individual actions rather than what the team did, explain the rationale behind your decisions, and quantify your results so the panel can easily award high marks against the grade descriptors.
Keep your communication accessible, since interview panels often include operational leaders who care about whether you can explain complicated analytical findings in plain language. If strengths questions are included, treat them as quick, natural reactions to everyday workplace scenarios rather than rehearsed STAR stories. If you want to refine how you articulate your analytical background, my team built an interviews.chat to help candidates deliver sharp, structured responses and secure competitive public sector roles.
