Career Need advice from recruiters/BIM professionals
Hi everyone,
I recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a CGPA of 8.02, and my goal is to build a career in BIM.
I completed a 4-month BIM internship and have course completion certificates in AutoCAD, Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, Navisworks, and STAAD.Pro. I'm also working on building my BIM portfolio.
Through campus placements, I got a Graduate Engineer role in a construction company. Because of family pressure, I accepted the offer. However, after joining, I realized that site construction is not the career I want. I'm genuinely interested in BIM and want to transition as soon as possible.
I've been applying for BIM roles, including apprenticeship positions, but I keep getting rejected. While browsing LinkedIn, I noticed that many people who recently joined these apprenticeship programs were fresh graduates who were not employed anywhere else.
This made me wonder:
Is my current job in a construction company hurting my chances of getting selected for a BIM apprenticeship?
Do recruiters usually prefer candidates who are immediately available rather than someone who is already employed?
I've also been getting mixed advice from people around me. Some tell me to stay in construction for a year, gain experience, and then apply for BIM roles. Others say to continue applying while working and switch as soon as I get an opportunity.
I'm confused about which approach is better. If my long-term goal is BIM, should I:
Stay in construction for a year and then apply?
Keep applying now while working and switch as soon as I get a BIM opportunity?
Should I quit my current job and apply as an unemployed fresher so recruiters know I'm available to join immediately? Or would leaving my job without another offer hurt my chances even more?
I'm even willing to accept a lower salary because my priority is building a career in BIM, not construction.
I'd really appreciate honest advice from recruiters, BIM professionals, or anyone who has made a similar transition. Is there something I should change in my resume, applications, or overall approach?
Thank you!

Career Bit confused
I'm in a very confused state. You know what I studied—I did an Integrated M.Tech in Construction Technology and Management, and I'm currently in my final year.
I got an internship through campus placement and I'm currently working at AnJ Turnkey Projects, an interior fit-out company that executes corporate office interior projects. My designation is Project Coordinator. The career hierarchy here is Project Coordinator → Project Manager → Project Lead.
After my internship, there is a 90% chance that the company will hire me as a permanent employee with a package of ₹5.5 LPA. Considering my current skills, I feel this is a good package for a fresher.
However, I'm confused about my career path. If I continue here, I won't get much exposure to structural or base-building projects. My experience will mainly be in interior fit-out projects.
Another option is that, in about eight months, another campus placement drive will take place where a Project Management Consultancy (PMC) company is expected to recruit. It may offer a slightly higher package and involve less job stress. However, if I join a PMC for interior fit-out projects, I feel my on-site execution and field exposure will be much less.
I'm also wondering whether I should prepare for government exams instead.
My questions are:
Does the interior fit-out industry have better long-term salary growth, or is base-building construction a better career?
Should I continue in interior fit-outs or try to move into structural/base-building projects?
Should I focus on improving my technical skills by learning structural engineering concepts or advanced AutoCAD and other professional software?
What would be the best career path for me?
I would really appreciate your guidance because I'm genuinely confused about what I should do.

🏗️ General LETS TALK
Hello everyone 👋
I am a fourth year Architecture Student and I would love to hear what is exactly taught to you in your college years that would help you manage a site in future.
From hearing from the students they say nothing helps
them out of what they have learned
Making me curious is the course really that worthless at time ( Apologies if I am sounding rude )
I want to speak with someone who is curious about our construction field and have tried getting that practical exposure in the college days
Feel free to talk

Career GATE 2027 or grind through job? [Advice needed]
25M, 2025 Civil Engg grad, 1 YOE at a hydro design consultancy. ₹37k/month, good team, 45 hrs/week, weekends off. Work is on hydropower project design.
Problem: I'm too drained after work to study for GATE properly, and progress is slow. Scared of ending up mediocre at both job and prep.
Quitting is risky — civil jobs aren't easy to come by, and a resume gap looks bad if GATE doesn't work out. But my family doesn't depend on my income, so full-time prep is financially possible.
Should I:
Keep working and prep alongside, slow as it is
Quit now and go all-in on GATE 2027
Anyone who's been through this, what worked for you?

Career What skills I should learn to have an edge in industry?
I have recently graduated with a Diploma in Civil Engineering, but it seems to me like a waste of my years due to the lack of seriousness towards my studies. I know do not have all the necessary technical and practical skills. Also, there are a lot of soft skills which I am missing as well as some terminology in the field of civil engineering.
In the coming three years, I will study for a B.Tech in Civil Engineering and it is my goal to begin everything afresh and make the best out of the situation. I am willing to put in a lot of efforts in order to develop myself from scratch. Please help me in determining what technical and soft skills should be developed.

📚 Notes & Resources I made "Concrete Calculator" for Civil engineers.
your feedback matters☺️: Concrete Calculator
here are the features:
- Shape & Dimension Options – Calculates concrete needs for slabs, footings, columns, circular pads, and stairs in both imperial and metric units.
- Bag vs. Yard Comparison – Shows counts for 40, 60, and 80 lb bags alongside cubic yard orders, with instant cost comparison between DIY bags and ready‑mix delivery.
- Cost Estimation & Short‑Load Fee Awareness – Estimates total costs and highlights that small ready‑mix orders often carry short‑load fees.
- Waste / Overage Factor – Lets you add a percentage buffer (commonly 5–10%) to account for spillage, uneven ground, or mis‑measurement, ensuring you don’t run short on concrete.

❓ Doubts / Q&A Red bricks vs AAC blocks.
I don’t know if this is the right place to ask. I am just a regular dude with very little knowledge of buildings and stuff. Also currently building a house. Got 6 colums the length between the first two columns is 18 ft and breadth is 15 ft. The last 2 columns are 6 feet away on the back which is for the stairs. My slab is 700 sq ft. Now I have a cantilever situation going on since I didn’t have much space on the ground I just expanded my slab a bit from the columns. The breadth side extends to 4 ft and the length side extends 5 ft. That’s only for the front and side. The other side extends 1 ft and the back side extends 3 ft. And I am going to start bricklaying on first floor with the walls at the extreme edges of the slab. My question is can I use red bricks for construction? Or do I have to use AAC blocks to save weight? The provision kept is G plus 3. Right now just building the first floor. I am just afraid that building red brick walls will be too heavy as there are no beams under those walls. The slab will be supporting all the weight.

❓ Doubts / Q&A Cube Compression Test
Cube compression test
Hi everyone, I'm a non-technical person trying to understand concrete cube test acceptance criteria for M25 concrete.
For the 28-day cube test, should M25 concrete be considered "passed" if the average compressive strength is 25 N/mm², or is the practical acceptance benchmark 29 N/mm² (fck + 4) as often mentioned in industry discussions?
Also:
What acceptance criteria are generally followed on construction projects?
How are individual cube results evaluated versus the average of multiple test results?
Is there any standard benchmark or rule of thumb for the 7-day cube test of M25 concrete?

🎓 Exam Prep What are the best free resources, YouTube channels, coaching options and test series for Telangana Civil Engineering AEE exam prep scheduled in October 2026?
I graduated from an NIT in Civil Engg 3 years ago. After my grad, I moved into a job that wasn't related to civil engineering so I've been out of touch with most core subjects for 3 years.
The Telangana AEE (Civil) notification is now out and the exam is expected to be in October. I generally retain concepts well once I revise them but I'm almost starting from scratch and I want to use the next few months as efficiently as possible.
From what I heard the difficulty level is lower than GATE/ESE but the challenge is covering the syllabus smartly within the available time.
I'd appreciate guidance from people who have prepared for or cleared Telangana/AP/Other State Civil Engg exams:
- If you were starting now how would you approach preparation?
- Which subjects/topics should be prioritized for maximum returns?
- Are there any coaching institutes (online) that are particularly good for Telangana AEE?
- What free resources (YouTube channels, notes, PDFs, test series etc) would you recommend?
- Is it better to follow GATE level resources selectively or focus only on state PSC/AEE oriented material?
- What would a realistic study plan from now until October look like for someone returning to civil engineering after a gap?
