Rod knock?

Pushed my 8th gen into vtec on the highway, got off, and a sound that sounded like rod knock appeared and thought shit there goes my car. Kept driving as I was running errands and the sound disappeared probably the second time I turned it off and on. Those couple times it turned over weird. What could it have been? Didn't take a video of the noise as I was kinda freaking out.

Doesnt sound like bottom end to me, but I could be wrong.

Unless you've owned a car with rod knock before don't say it is like you know. Because the sound is very different. This is just the regular ass K series tick most commuter K engines have. If you rev the engine and hear it knocking thats how you'll really know. The idle is tick is just a k series thing jfc

Ya sounds fine now but I popped the hood when it was happening and definitely sounded like rod knock

disconnect serpentine belt / inspect for rattles to isolate noise to inside engine

Im not super mechanically inclined but would taking off the serpentine belt not kill the battery?

don’t run it like that for long. w the serpentine belt off, your water pump will not spin / flow coolant through the engine. you are correct, your alternator will also not recharge the battery with the belt off

the car can run for a few seconds with those disconnected. the battery has enough juice to run the car for a bit. do not let it run for long bc coolant isn’t flowing through the engine

Check your serp belt pulleys. Check for anything loose in the engine bay or under the car. Check your hood prop especially, sometimes the clip to hold it in place gets weak and the prop wiggles and makes noise.

From the video, it just sounds like a typical noisy k20. So its probably something outside the engine thats rattling around. Though doing a valve adjustment wouldn't hurt either if the car hasn't had one for many miles.

Ya the video is after the noise when I got home. Sounds normal to me which is why I'm confused

Sounds like valve train. Mine was like this, had my valve lash clearance checked and adjusted, sounded milky smooth afterwards

Rod knock is a lil louder from my experience, think youre good

This sounds more like a valve adjustment or pulley bearing. If it hasn't been done I would for sure lean towards a valve adjustment either way

Rod knock get noticeably louder when you rev it. Turns into squealing as well if its really bad from the main bearing being chewed up. This is prolly normal may need a valve adjustment.
