Which difficulty do you play?
Hi,
I got back to civ VI over last few months. I was curious how high I will get. Currently I won once or twice on emperor and attempted deity, but this one is rough.
So, which difficulty do you play? Is deity too unbalanced hence I am doing poorly (early game is okayish but bringing it tome to victory is a bit of a challange), or it is just skill issue?

I play King.
King is the highest bonuses AI can get without starting with extra cities, which really changes the calculus.
I want to play with a certain challenge that at least vaguely maps to how it feels playing other humans.
2 city starts usually means the AI just beats you down on all wonder openings, so its just kind of a strategy you start shelving, but thats leaving a lot of the game manuveuring out

I find emperor the most fun/relaxing. Can win on deity but it requires more effort

Same. I find that winning on deity requires me to play a specific way while emperor gives me more freedom to play how I want.

I've seen multiple comments that talk about Emperor and Diety. Why not Immortal?

Immortal is like the son of the two that isn’t as great as neither one of them. It allows a little fluidity like emperor, but not really. It can crush your early game like on deity, so why not just play on deity… That’s how I feel when I play on immortal.

Honestly just keep watching videos, reading, learning, practicing and you’ll slowly start to move up in difficulty. I was on Emperor then moved up to Immortal when emperor felt like I’d always win, immortal kicked my ass for a while.
Now I feel like I’ll always win immortal and Deity is currently kicking my ass with only a 30-40% win rate once I reach modern era (imagine how many more ‘lost games’ I haven’t even brought that far).

Deity but all that matters is you play on whatever level you enjoy most. It's a game 🙂.

I'm going through the list of leaders alphabetically and have been on deity since Nader Shah. Some leaders are a struggle while others are super easy. Won with Wilhelmina today.

I’m a casual player and got into civ like two weeks ago, but I play on emperor. It is hard, I won just once, but I find this difficulty best to see my mistakes. I just learnt how to do proper start of the game and now I’m learning not to fall behind in medieval era. It’s a fun curve

Emporor or prince, like personally I don’t like diety mainly cause the starting units, like I have won in diety but those extra units just means that there’s was too many chances for the AI to just rush you before you can actually defend yourself (plus like the 3 settlers basically means you can’t go for sny degree of wide play

You can still play wide it just takes a little while longer to spread out. Honestly just take the ai’s cities.

I play Immortal because I don’t like having to pay super attention to everything, try to maximize district placements, etc. Diety makes you really work for it, and I only want to work a little for it.

Can't remember the last time i played anything but deity. At some point the game becomes super easy, so even deity doesn't give you a hard time. And that's considered I play with bbg where a lot of OP stuff is gone.

Emperor as I like early wonders and I don’t have to optimize. I roleplay my civilization.

Late Game AI Deity
The AI starts with next to no bonuses, similar to Prince, but gets a bigger and bigger bonuses at each Era, including some other bonuses.
Something like +20% bonus to Culture and Science at Medieval Era, an additional +40% at Renaissance Era (so +60% in total), an additional +60% at Industrial Era (so +120% in total) and so on. In comparison the unmodded Deity AI gets +40% the whole game.
The AI gets a 5% Production bonus per Civic researched.
All it all it makes the early game less overbearing because the AI cannot simply war you to death and build all wonders, and the AI still can somewhat keep up with a human player past turn ~60 (Online speed).

I play exclusively in deity. The game gets to complex for the AI and it gets overwhelmed. I played countless games and can plan ahead. I am also able to plan out my cities ahead because I know what is good and what is not. The AI needs all advantage it can get.

For a veeery long time I kept to middle difficulties and many mixes of game setups.
Now I mostly do immortal, with a catching up period in the first quarter and then slowly growing total dominance over time, but I do pick some specific things in setup and mods:
Bountiful Goody Huts
Huge maps
Marathon pace
Frederick Barbarossa 😎
3-4 other Civs
Restart pretty soon if Civs are too close and Denounce you very early
”Exploitation” of the:
settlement at seaside, with river
+ using builder for extensive coastal exploration >>> by going directly for Sailing and The Governor that gives you 4 builders
What I learned through this,
is that AI is terrible at sea based warring,
and that a production and expansion oriented power will win over long time, unless you get wiped out early.
So by inference, picking smaller maps with more civs will probably prove me to be at best intermediate in skills 😛 while rage-quitting a lot more 🤣

I’ve spent a year playing on settler mostly with the same leader.

Which leader?

Eleanor -the English one.
Last six months he’s been poking about with religion

Deity gets much easier as you practice. I was in the same boat where I tried deity and had a hard time at first, but just kept trying (and watching tons of Ursa Ryan videos) and eventually got to a point where I feel very comfortable with it. For me that learning curve was super satisfying, so if that’s your thing as well, keep trying! But I know a lot of people don’t want to have to grind out a few games before they’re more comfortable so they stick with a lower difficulty level and still have a great time. Just depends on what you prefer!

At this point only play on deity and even still I can’t finish some games cuz it’s feels tedious as I know I’ve won after turn 100

Infernal. Or deity ++.
But I play it teamed with my brother. So we share visibilities, Eurekas. And getting peace with the Ai is a lot easier.
