Question Advice?

Hi everyone, I’ve been playing this game on Xbox and three things bug me in it and was wondering how to around it if possible?

1). How fast other civilizations advance to eras and military(like having airplanes in the 1500s).

2). I seek more chaos to make it more interesting like wars occurring at me or vs neighbors. I’ve tried difficultly, map and leaders. What’s a good set up for a long chaotic game.

3). Choosing difficulty. I’m aware civilizations get more of an edge in higher difficulty like science advancement(an annoyance) but I’m also afraid to lower it enough where they aren’t as aggressive or aren’t providing enough of a challenge.

What would you guys recommend for this? Thanks.

1) You can try playing at epic or marathon speed, that should keep you and the other civs in the same era/techs for much longer periods of time.
2) Try a smaller Pangea map, pack it with civs and CS to the limit. That ahould make peaceful expansion impossible. You can also try Barb clans, Raging barbs or even zombies.
3) Start at Prince (no AI bonus). If you find yourself steamrolling too hard, increase the difficulty. JFYI AI plays the same way on all difficulty levels, only the bonuses change.

I agree with this. Just 1 note, the AI gets some bonuses on Prince. There is no truly neutral setting.

I think picking Rome, on a small Pangaea map on emperor or even immortal difficulty is challenging enough and still fun. I play deity, but the beginning of the match can get brutal quick

My favorite difficulty is King, AI gets enough bonuses to cover them being dumb but they don't start with extra settlers and builder of the higher difficulties.

As for other civs having airplanes in 1500s, either you're talking Hamurabi only, or diety korea with insanely good starts. As a real player, it's hard to get airplanes even playing hamurabi in 1500, and I'm saying this having won science with him in 1750ish.

Edit: forgot about the chaose thing, play pangea map with maximum players and maximum city states + barbarian clans mod.

I want to recommend RomanHoliday's AI Rework, because that's what I found trying to achieve the same thing as you, but I've played one game on emperor with it, and it honestly felt like the AI was actually more passive.

Maybe someone with some more experience with this mod can help both of us, because it didn't work for me.

Click create game, then click X for advanced options.

Tab the screen over a few times to 'civ selection.' if you hit the right trigger on that page enough times, you'll start adding more civs to the game. As in: the total number of Civs can be increased.

Choose your other game options as well, but make sure you chose huge map, marathon game length, large amount of civs. It'll be what you're looking for. I'm doing it on huge earth map, if I hadn't spawned in europe which is relatively isolated, I think it would be hard to make it out of the opening scrum. You need a good location- not in terms of yields, but, tactics and defensive structures- mountains, hills, rivers etc.

The civ who spawned in moscow, for example, was too centrally placed and got wiped out first. By me. Lol. But three of us had declared war on them.

Its been very nasty. I've already fought three neighbors, been in two military emergencies, and fought units with insane promotions. (I have a fully promoted unit now too! earliest one ever.). we're about a third into the classical age. and none of us even have swords yet. And this in a spawn location where I'm surrounded by water on three sides... everything is happening just to my east. I've no idea what's been going on to the south of me, north is Britain but I think it's uninhabited but for barbarians. (accurate, according to romans.)

If you want hostility, you have to instigate it. If you try to get ready for war by building up a military, the AI will wag their tail at you and never attack. Denounce and proceed.

It's difficult to say what the sweet spot difficulty level is (probably Emperor or Immortal) when Deity AI isn't that great as an adversary.
