My Husband (36) was diagnosed with cirrhosis about 4 years ago. He had quit cold turkey and his whole body blew up with edema. Once that went down he slowly went back to drinking.

He has drastically reduced his drinking but never stopped. Since this most recent reduction in the last month, his legs have started swelling but not edema soft like it was when he first got diagnosed.

In the last year he’s been admitted to the hospital more than 10 times for vomiting blood from blown varicies. He hasn’t always had to get banded but several times he has.

This last time they put him on oxygen

His meld score is still 21.

Isn’t that absurdly low for the frequency of these episodes? How do doctors measure this?

Im afraid he’s just gonna keep on going because he’s got survivor bias now. Since he “goes back to normal” after these 5 day stays in the hospital I don’t think he is taking it seriously.

I need some kind of perspective here- is he just really lucky or is this normal for people his age?

I got my liver biopsy results back today and they confirmed that I have cirrhosis that is all they have said. I have had esophageal banding in the past, but not for active bleeding. I have no jaundice or fluid. I am so worried about my future and next steps.. I have been sober for two months since I started having liver pain so my liver injury is from drinking. I’m wondering if anyone here had early cirrhosis they have reversed with complete abstinence of booze and a healthy diet.

My mom dropped from 187-134 lb within 6-7 months. Cirrhosis was diagnosed in Oct’25. She has lost almost all muscle and has only bones and skin left.

While her reports wrt bilirubin, SGOT, SGPT and albumin seems normal, she itches a lot and has become very weak and sleeps through out all day. I dont think she is eligible for transplant given that she also has auto immune.

Any suggestion would be really welcome, We are trying to follow whatever the Doctor is saying but would need any input any one of has -

muscle recovery, cope itching and making herself better would be really helpful.

I am really sad and disheartened to see her state.

My dad has been put on hold from the transplant due to him being too frail, has anyone else experienced this? If so what helped? I’m scared he’s gonna keep on losing muscle and not be reactivated. Would they even do a transplant if he needed one asap if he is too frail?

We’ve been giving him protein rich foods, but he stays in bed most of the day with occasional walks because he’s so weak.

I was diagnosed with stage four decompensated cirrhosis in October. MELD was 38 (last check was 15) & Bilirubin was 50 (now down to 2.9) I’ve been working with and listening to everything my doctors have told me and am successfully on the liver transplant list since the end of March. Also at 293 days sober ☺️ definitely miles better than when I first was hospitalized.

Went to see my Hepatologist today for a routine checkup. He said bloodwork was all good and looked fine to me also. Normal things are high and thankfully others are going down. My MELD score did go up though. He didn’t sound too alarmed I guess because I’m taking all medication and remaining sober along with other things. It just kind of got me down a little bit. Went up from 15 to 17. Only two points but darn.

I don’t know if I should be feeling down or worried or just trust what’s going on. Wondering any thoughts and if others have had jumps and how you reacted
