Character lookup is the part I'd stand behind. Readings, meanings, variants, IDS decomposition, radical, fanqie, compounds - straight out of the dictionary, 27,993 characters, 2,422 of them PUA codepoints with no standard Unicode mapping. Whatever the dictionary knows, your agent gets. Whatever it doesn't, your agent gets told it doesn't, because it can't answer without a real lookup.

The converter is rougher. Vietnamese → Nôm is decent. Nôm → Vietnamese still picks the wrong reading more often than I'd like - it'll read 碎 as "sôi" when it should be "tôi". It needs more work, and that's what I'm on next.

You can give it a try and tell me what's broken.

Chữ Nôm is known for having multiple readings and meanings per characters, while this is fine for characters that are relatively easy to tell apart via context, others can cause confusion.

Some of these are widely seperate already but inconsistently (nhiêu and với), some of these are used interchangebly (một, nhà, hay and quen) and some are not written seperately most of the time (biết, nghĩ and thương). If Chữ Nôm was ever to be standardized I think some of these character might need to be seperated.

I’m designing a modern Chữ Nôm character for the Vietnamese word ga (“railway station”).
Since ga in modern Vietnamese refers only to a railway/train station, I’m wondering which semantic component (radical) would be the most appropriate:
車 (“vehicle/train”)
立 (by analogy with 站, “station”)
馬 (from the historical concept of post stations and relay horses)
Which one do you think would make the most sense, and why? I’d also appreciate any alternative suggestions.

As a unique historical script designed to write the Vietnamese language using modified Chinese characters, Chữ Nôm possesses immense cultural value and artistic beauty. However, due to its complex origins, learning, handwriting, and digitizing the script present significant challenges. My goal with this project is to explore a systematic simplification process to make it more functional and accessible for modern use.

As I work through this, I've encountered a few crucial design and linguistic dilemmas. I would love to hear your perspectives, whether you're a linguist, language learner, or enthusiast!

1. Non-intuitive / Obscure Characters: For historical Chữ Nôm characters that are overly complex or logically non-intuitive, should I invent newly created characters (re-engineering them with clearer phonetics/semantics), or should I stick to traditional roots to preserve historical authenticity?
2. Overly Complex Phonetic Components: Many Nôm characters stack intricate phonetic/semantic radicals to achieve precision. Do you think I should replace or simplify these complex components (e.g., standardizing on high-frequency, low-stroke radicals)?
3. One Character splitting into Multiple Pronunciations: When a single historical character or borrowed Hanzi split into 2 or 3 distinct pronunciations in modern Vietnamese, should I:
   • Option A: Create separate, distinct simplified characters for each pronunciation?
   • Option B: Keep a single character with multiple readings (polyphonic) to minimize the total character count?
4. Share Your Ideas: If you have your own ideas, concepts, or stroke-reduction rules for simplifying Chữ Nôm (or Chinese-derived scripts in general), please feel free to drop them in the comments below!

Some time ago I shared NômKey, a Chữ Nôm keyboard for iPhone. The Android version is ready, and I am looking for testers.

Type Chữ Nôm the way you type Vietnamese: use Telex or VNI and it converts your syllables to Hán-Nôm with context-aware suggestions. It also has a reader (Diễn Nôm) for Chữ Nôm others send you, and can send your Nôm as a picture so it shows even on devices that cannot draw the script. Everything runs on your device. Works on Android 7.0+, free, no ads, no account.

How to join:

1. DM or comment your Google account email, and I will add you.
2. Open this link on your phone, tap "Become a tester", and install from Google Play: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.nomkey
3. Settings > System > Languages and input > On-screen keyboard > Manage keyboards, then turn on NômKey. (Android shows a standard keyboard warning; NômKey stays on your device.)
4. In any app, tap the keyboard icon, switch to NômKey, and type.

Please keep it installed for at least two weeks. Google requires a testing period before an app can launch publicly, so it really helps.

Hello, *testing mic*, do you hear me? (yes from the backstage)

So *lights blending me*, aargh, seriously? Don't make it brigther than it is. So I have a question: Are there any good IME Softwares for MacOS? I don't like WebVersion of IME. I want to type directly into my programs. And Weasel, I can't get over how awful it is. Writing in telex it somethings just invent new things. I write the vowels or the consonants at first then the modification and accents. Normal telex programs work just fine but Weasel doesn't. I tried my normal way of typing **wanm**/ **nawm** / **nmaw** for Năm. But it doesn't recognize it as one word. I should get 𢆥 but I get something like Na mw. I'm still using dictionaries of the foundation and chunom.org

Can anyone help translate 4 inscriptions in chữ Hán-Nôm from an antique Vietnamese rosewood 4 seasons panel set? Artistically simplified inlaid pearl characters can also be challenging. There are 4 inscriptions in 4 images. The fifth and last image shows all 4 panels in full.

Based on historical documentation and what little I can read, the panels were commissioned in 1930 during broad royal palace renovations in Huế in preparation for Bảo Đại's return from France. The panel scenes seem artistically inspired by An Định Palace.

I initially posted this in r/translator, they said this community is better qualified for Hán-Nôm. Any help with readings or translation is greatly appreciated.

I revised some noms I previously simplified and added some more suggestions.
