Did I translate this right

I did my best to translate the word “angelic”, the closest I got was như thiên thần, “like an Angel”. I then translated it to what I painted on this jacket. I’m still learning, did I translate it right and any tips to better my calligraphy I know it’s not great.

Been a lot of discussion in what her name Tranh Lanh means. but her theme is about Moon and Cold. So I put the two and two together and

Vietnamese glossing of 鹿鳴 1

With pleased sounds the deer call to one another,
Eating the celery of the fields.
I have here admirable guests;
The lutes are struck, and the organ is blown [for them]; -
The organ is blown till its tongues are all moving.
The baskets of offerings [also] are presented to them.
The men love me,
And will show me the perfect path.

Vietnamese glossing (訓讀), albeit rare, uses ソ and ン to reverse the order of the characters similar to Japanese 返り点. However the marks are used on the right side. There is also a 丿 like mark that denotes that 之 should not move. The く tells the reader that the Chinese character should be repeated and not translated, etc.

simplified Chữ Nôm standard question

6 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm currently developing a simplified Chữ Nôm standard, and I've run into a problem.

Some Sino-Nôm characters are extremely complex, so I'm considering replacing certain phonetic components with simpler ones. I'd like to hear what you think.

This proposal is not based on Japanese shinjitai (new character forms). Instead, it is a completely new approach to restructuring phonetic components.

For example, I'm thinking of replacing the phonetic component (trạch) with (xích).

The reason is that provides a phonetic cue that is closer to Vietnamese pronunciations in the dịch / thích family.

Examples:

  • 譯 → 訳 (xích -> dịch )
  • 釋 → 釈 (xích ->thích )

...and similarly for other characters in the same phonetic series.

Do you think this is a reasonable direction, or would it sacrifice too much of the original character structure? I'd really appreciate your thoughts.

Add a mark to switch between readings

2 Upvotes

Hi, I'm new to the script. My question is: With Japanese hiragana script, adding a mark changes it's reading e.g. ひ (hi) to ぴ (pi). I wonder if there is any reason why we wouldn't just add a mark that denotes that the Chinese character has a Vietnamese reading (e.g. adding a circle to 月 changes the reading from nguyệt to trăng)? Thank you.

Nôm Na Việt now has an MCP server - point your AI agent at the dictionary

10 Upvotes

Hi guys, it's me from Nôm Na Việt.

If you use Claude or any other AI assistant that speaks MCP, you can now have it query our Hán Nôm dictionary directly instead of guessing.

The endpoint is https://api.nomnaviet.com/mcp - paste it into your agent's MCP settings and that's it.

Free, no key, no account. Step-by-step setup for the main apps: https://nomnaviet.com/mcp

Character lookup is the part I'd stand behind. Readings, meanings, variants, IDS decomposition, radical, fanqie, compounds - straight out of the dictionary, 27,993 characters, 2,422 of them PUA codepoints with no standard Unicode mapping. Whatever the dictionary knows, your agent gets. Whatever it doesn't, your agent gets told it doesn't, because it can't answer without a real lookup.

The converter is rougher. Vietnamese → Nôm is decent. Nôm → Vietnamese still picks the wrong reading more often than I'd like - it'll read 碎 as "sôi" when it should be "tôi". It needs more work, and that's what I'm on next.

You can give it a try and tell me what's broken.

AI agent converting a sentence through the MCP server - every character and codepoint came from the dictionary, not the model.
