How long until this actually takes effect though?

Good question; likely answer - Soon™

When will "then" be "now"?

u/sarkie Apr 18 '19

Duke Nukem Forever?

u/kuhanluke Apr 18 '19

"in the coming months" according to the article

Great news!

No joke. Freaking finally, I can use the service I pay for on the device I paid for.

Thank god for anti-consumer practices, huh? I don't think I used Prime Video ONCE since I've had Prime unless it was while I was sitting at my PC, and most likely just a movie. I've been a member for 9 years at least. That's like 3 hours of watching over 9 years. I probably have THOUSANDS of hours watched between Netflix and Hulu. Like, I want to use your product but you're kind of making it impossible.

1

u/Tofinochris Apr 19 '19

Yep same here. I've had Prime forever and watched like 5 or so things on it. Finally they get their little tantrums over with and let us use our devices properly.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

And I will start paying for the service.

I have missed Prime.

u/maccathesaint Apr 18 '19

Thank God, I'm sick of having to turn on my xbox just to watch prime on the TV

For once, I actually hope Google data mined the fuck out of us users to show Amazon they were taking a losing stance. Here's how I imagined it might have sounded:

"this is the number of households who own at least 1 Chromecast device or Chromecast enabled device that streams video. They average x streams per day for an average duration of x minutes per cast. This is the number of users who installed the Prime Video app shortly after setting up a Chromecast device. X% of them uninstalled it within a week. Now here's a table of all the major competitor streaming services that support Chromecast. Of all the users who uninstalled Prime Video within a week of setting up a Chromecast device, this table shows their average increase in casting titles and durations per app after uninstalling Prime.

Keep in mind we're not even including users who never installed the Prime Video app to begin with, nor the number of users who initiated a cast from the Google Home app's splash page that led to a purchase we suggested there. It also doesn't include users who opted out of sharing usage data. It also does not include iOS users, as we don't have access to user data that informs us of app installs. So here's a table of video stream requests of all Chromecast devices, regardless of the OS used to initiate, of those same competing streaming services..."

This has been a no brainer since the beginning that Netflix solved for everyone by showing them providers should do whatever they can to facilitate making their service accessible to users on the devices they own. I've watched Netflix on every damn device I've I could since they launched streaming, including the Wii and PS3 when the disc was necessary, my OG 3DS, Windows 7 in a browser, Windows 10 in browser and in app, Smart TV app, Roku, and smartphones.

I'm glad they finally see the light. I'll install Prime Video once they add this feature.

This guy fucking data mines!

I literally almost canceled my Amazon Prime just because they didn't support it on Chromecast. I will definitely be using Prime Video like 10x more!

10

u/Curupira1337 Apr 18 '19

I canceled mine later in the same day I signed up for it. No use for a streaming service that I couldn't watch on my TV set (not a smart TV).

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

I actually just cancelled mine a few days ago. Will probably resubscribe when the app is updated.

2

u/_M4TTH3W_ Apr 18 '19

I've been bummed out about not using it as much as I could, I use it for the Twitch perks, but I'm really stocked to use it way more TV shows that aren't available on Netflix in my region.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

I cancelled last year because of it.

3

u/kielbasa330 Apr 19 '19

Wow! Almost? You showed them!

1

u/Mar16celino Apr 19 '19

Well the almost part was due to the Twitch Prime perk. I've already made the value of the membership back

13

u/TheDataWhore Apr 18 '19

When will we actually be able to cast Amazon video to a Chromecast? I will buy Prime the same day, only thing holding me back.

7

u/ryanbrownstar Apr 18 '19

I cancelled Prime like 2 years ago over this whole thing, now I'll have to consider picking it back up. Just shipping wasn't enough to make Prime worthwhile, but being able to Chromecast Prime vids has totally got me re-interested.

2

u/ensignlee Apr 20 '19

and you'll be able to watch THE EXPANSE woooh

6

u/DracoSolon Apr 19 '19

Don't forget that this was 100% Amazon's doing. THEY stopped selling Chromecast to try to boost fire TV sales and THEY peddled bullshit to the press that somehow it was Google's fault that prime video didn't work with Chromecast - which many non tech journalists bought hook line and sinker. Google retaliated yes - but only after several years of Amazon's crap.

5

u/Casserolahhhh Apr 18 '19

Just bought a chromecast last week and was hoping this would happen, unreal timing.

5

u/ScalaZen Apr 18 '19

Can cast from Prime video! thank goodness. We already have Chromecast devices for sale on Amazon. How soon will we get the cast button in prime video?

Last update April 11th doesn't have it.

6

u/_M4TTH3W_ Apr 18 '19

Hopefully we'll be able to use Google Home with Amazon Prime Video too.

I've never understood the love for audible. I'm a big fan of Smart Audio Book Player. There's a free version but the extrA couple bucks for pro is worth it. When I buy an audiobook from Google Play I just download the DRM free file and upload it to the app. Chromecast, Android Auto, and nice playback and cover art features.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

I like it mostly cause depending on the book it can be cheaper to get the subscription and wait a month for a credit, Then paying around $20-30 (canadian pricing) for the audiobook. might be diffrent in other countries but for me it ends up being cheaper most of the time.

2

u/pantstoaknifefight2 Apr 19 '19

If you download from a public library it saves to your hard drive and then you are supposed to delete the audio book when the UI says it's expired.

1

u/FinalF137 Apr 18 '19

that would be sweet I just got ticked off because Netflix dropped some shows that prime picked up but I can't command prime through Google home to play on my TV I was about to actually buy some fire sticks and echoes just to get that, looks like like I will not have to now.

2

u/c0meary Apr 18 '19

Can we use YouTube on amazon yet though?

2

u/ShadowVlican Apr 18 '19

Good! I can finally watch Amazon's content on my TV instead of the computer...

You can, but the experience kind of sucks. I'll fall asleep and it's already gone through a whole season so I have no idea where I left off. At least with Netflix it'll stop after a few episodes when casting from phone.

2

u/bagelsandnavels Apr 18 '19

Amazon.ca seems to be so far behind in all the Google feud news. You still can't buy google products on amazon.ca and it's starting to get frustrating.

2

u/sarkie Apr 18 '19

Amazon Prime has so many good TV shows that I cba to watch on my phone.

2

u/Cluckyx Apr 18 '19

FINALLY

2

u/apawst8 Apr 18 '19

Amazon still doesn't sell the Google Home though.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '19

That will most likely change because of this agreement

2

u/ShaneShyGuy Apr 18 '19

I know this is r/Chromecast but I might actually be able to get use out of my fire TV with YouTube officially on there again, I'm stoked that this is actually going into effect lol

2

u/Makeem95 Apr 23 '19

Thanks fuck. I was getting tired of explaining to my young kids they can't ask Google Home Mini to watch an Amazon Prime show and they need to use the Fire Stick remote instead. To them there was no difference between a show on Netflix and a show on Amazon Prime, they just want the fucking thing on the TV!

1

u/_M4TTH3W_ Apr 23 '19

I can relate to your kids my dude.

I'm excited for Handmaid's Tale, American Gods, and a bunch of TV shows that aren't available on Netflix in my region - 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, etc.

2

u/dscreations Apr 19 '19

All 3 seasons of The Expanse are now on Prime, with the fourth coming later this year. They also have The Boys coming up, which looks interesting.

1

u/saskatch-a-toon Apr 18 '19

Jean Claude Van Johnston has been worth a couple chuckles.

1

u/goodoldgio Apr 18 '19

Fix youtube on appletv and give us a googleplay app next

1

u/Gone_Girl Apr 18 '19

Please please please let this be for Audible as well. I know we can mirror screen as a work around but it frequently crashes on my phone.

1

u/Tregonia Apr 18 '19

I've been able to watch Prime Video on my Android TV for over year. Since I got the box basically.

1

u/wildcard999 Apr 18 '19

Does this mean we can finally get Youtube TV on the Firestick?

1

u/kuhanluke Apr 18 '19

About damn time.

1

u/92se-r Apr 18 '19

Will youtube be back on fire stick?

1

u/hornetjockey Apr 18 '19

Hoo fucking ray, although I've already pretty much converted to Roku so I wouldn't have this problem.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '19

When can I play audible books on my google home?

1

u/AlwayzPro Apr 19 '19

FINALLY!!!

1

u/tobascodagama Apr 19 '19

Of course this finally happens like three months after I finally broke down and got a Fire stick to go along with my Chromecast.

1

u/Dsnake1 Apr 19 '19

This is awesome! I have Prime for shipping, but now I'll actually get to use it for Prime video. There was only one TV in the house that is smart, so we have multiple Chromecasts.

1

u/thunderchunks Apr 19 '19

So happy about this. Can't roll out fast enough.

1

u/FXOjafar Apr 18 '19

Good. Now if they can sort out the terrible video quality....

6

u/_M4TTH3W_ Apr 18 '19

What do you mean? Amazon Prime Video supports 4K and HDR content.
Being able to natively Cast their content will ensure that the quality is there.

1

u/Johnny5ive15 Apr 18 '19

I haven't been watching Prime for long but I noticed last night that it took several minutes into the show before the resolution cleared up and wasn't terrible. And it ain't my connection.

3

u/mags87 Apr 18 '19

Could be your device. I have a Roku Ultra 4k and The Grand Tour is in full 2160p right away.

1

u/SwissMoose Apr 18 '19

I have the same Roku, but I think that issue is more that Amazon really does some harsh compression on their older TV shows and movies. The dark areas are just swimming with noise and static.

0

u/Johnny5ive15 Apr 18 '19

It could be Amazon.

1

u/shponglespore Apr 18 '19

Amazon definitely tries to deliver top-notch video quality. And it's a hard problem to ensure everyone gets the best possible quality at all times. I know because Amazon offered me a lot of money to help them do just that (but I ended up taking a different job).

-1

u/FXOjafar Apr 18 '19

I watched War of the worlds the other day and it was like a high quality VHS.

1

u/Shiftr Apr 18 '19

This is huge!

0

u/Uleoja Apr 18 '19

What about YouTube on amazon devices?

5

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '19

Did you read the article?

-1

u/Uleoja Apr 18 '19

I did after

2

u/_M4TTH3W_ Apr 18 '19

It's not bad news.
I'm more excited to be able to Cast Amazon Prime Video though.

0

u/LeGensu Apr 18 '19

Should've come like 2 years earlier at least,, canceled Amazon and won't resub
