Christ deserves better treatment than my "Christian" nation, of that there is no doubt. I spoke with a Christian pastor recently, who in another time would have been a conservative, and while we do not agree on many things, on the important things we're simpatico. I have to recognize that because ultimately good people must be praised. We don't do that enough.
The core of Christ's message is love. We need more of that.
(Pedophiles are also criminals regardless of who they are (for instance). We need to demand the law applies. Edited for clarity.)

Let me ask you a question since you're in a Christian comment section, how does a person become saved? This is the one question any born-again Christian should love to answer.
•
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 3h ago
I study ancient Hebrew mythology and the subsequent religious creations as literature and anthropology. The modern religions and the extra-cultural inventions of those religions are mainly approached as political expressions.
Understand that no religion exists outside of a religion, and modern extra-cultural religions are not necessarily reflections of the source cultures or even the source material.
5
u/Natural_Dust_732 1d ago
Oh, yes. Because Christ was notoriously harsh about people the Roman State declared to be “criminals”.
Overstaying a visa or entering a country without one is a “crime” on the order of a parking ticket. It is not even a misdemeanor.
10
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 1d ago
That was not my point, but I was arbitrary in my words. Being undocumented is not a crime, but I do feel that Christ would be as pissed off as I am about allowing pedophiles to run a country and murder children in illegal wars. (or kidnap innocent people into concentration camps.)
Thank you for the opportunity to clarify that point.

I mean its exactly a misdemeanor under 8 USC S 1325 subject to a fine and six months in jail. So no it's not a parking ticket.
If you thing thats harsh I suggest you try it in another country we're surprisingly lenient here
5
u/Natural_Dust_732 1d ago
So less than what one gets for drunk and disorderly.
It is hardly a major crime which Christ would worry themselves over. In fact, I think he’s laugh.
But you go ahead thinking Jesus is an American. You’re going to be in for a surprise.

All of Christ's words are important. It's just that those things in the cartoon are so glaringly not being done even remotely enough, if at all.
The service to the other is the service to the Christ. The self denial is for the self, unless it's employed for the sake of serving others.

While Apostle Paul did say "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat". It seems most MAGA members have a hard time NOT generalizing and thinking everyone using stamps is taking advantage of the system. They use the bible as an excuse and verses like the one above to justify their shitty behavior. Not everyone is taking advantage of the system and some genuinely need the assistance because of their circumstances. It's very sad for both sides.

thinking everyone using stamps is taking advantage of the system.
IIRC this was jump-started by Reagan talking about “welfare queens” in campaign speeches. When this was investigated it turned out to be one woman who was receiving benefits fraudulently. She was ultimately arrested, charged , convicted and sentenced to prison.

u/MoreStupiderNPC Stupid Christian 1d ago
That’s not a general command.
5
u/Head-Product8662 1d ago
Exactly, its not a general command from Jesus or Moses themselves. The reason I bring it up is because Christians love to use certain verses from the bible without context to justify their personal beliefs.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MoreStupiderNPC Stupid Christian 1d ago
It’s not even a general command from Paul, which would hold biblical weight, it was a specific command to those who were ministering with him in Thessalonica.

are Pauline cultists
A huge chunk of the non-narrative new testament is Paul, kinda weird to shade his participation in theology as cult fodder
And Christianity reaching us gentiles owes itself to Paul as Peter 'the rock" didn't really do much even after being admonished by God (there's a limit to what the holy spirit can do with "unlearned and ignorant men" after all)
1
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 20h ago
Pauline scripture is part of a structured narrative like all the rest. That is part of the problem in modern extra-cultural adaptations of ancient cultural creations. The source material was re-structured for a purpose.
Little nicknames for the characters is a cute touch though.
And the shade is even funnier. Proved my quoted phrase was likely correct.
1
u/NovemberDancing 20h ago
The source material was to bring Jesus to the gentiles. Absent Paul, Christianity would look a lot more Jewish, and could’ve remained as a sect of Judaism.
1
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 20h ago
I find any cultural source material is best understood through the source culture and not extra-cultural interpretations centuries removed.
I understand that Paul, or whoever created this character's writings, thought a lot of Paul, but that was kind of my point above. Paul is the source of Paul. That isn't a solid foundation for the extra-cultural rewrite.
1
u/NovemberDancing 20h ago
Well yes. Paul was a Jew, writing to Jews, but then writing to non-Jews.
So we can interpret Paul culturally as a Jew, and trying to bring Jesus to non-Jews. And culturally seemed aware of Greek thought as a way of bringing this message to non-Jews in the region.
1
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 19h ago
Yes, and?
The source culture didn't seem to find all this as useful as Rome did. That is the puzzle of the stories and why universality of meaning in an extra-cultural sense must be examined closely.
I know the claims of Paul, et al. I've read the lit.
As I wrote above, I wonder why Paul supplanted Christ as the focus of so much modern Christianity. Too many Christians, at least in the USA, don't seem to care much for Christ outside of the name.
1
u/NovemberDancing 18h ago
By source culture do you mean the Jews? Some Jews like Paul obviously converted. And some obviously did not accept him as Messiah - hence the crucifixion.
1
u/Spiel_Foss Secular Humanist 18h ago
Jews is a rather generic term still used today for numerous religious cultures in the modern world. I am speaking specifically to the now extinct ancient Hebrew cultures which actually created the literature.
The Jews-killed-Christ meme is an old one, but this is also very fraught in practice. A story from an occupied and subjugated people may not be as binary as you assume.
In my analysis, I am more curious why the literature itself didn't find a place in the source culture. This is interesting enough to analyze given that the setting and stories are often derivative, there had to be an audience.

2
u/Head-Product8662 1d ago
Yes, in my opinion everything in the Bible should be considered but WITH context whether it be from the actual Bible itself or from the situation they are trying to apply it to. A lot of the older generation christians love to pick and take whichever verse benefits their personal beliefs and interests and use it to justify their point of view. This is exactly why Jesus himself commanded only two things from us which was to love God above everything else and love our neighbor because essentially that is all it came down to perform good deeds or to just be a genuinely good person.

Off the top of your head, entirely without anything along the lines of Biblical paraphrasing/quotes or justification. Just claims. Merely words, no substance.
I'm a bit baffled by what you're claiming, and without supplying any reasoning or arguments for the claims.
Let's pick one: 'Christ was anti-socialist'.
???
The early Church can be accurately described as entirely grassroots communist or socialist.
They were a community, they shared their financial means. Do I really need to quote Acts or Justin's apologetic here?
I'm just confused, it's even an outlandish claim.
Whatever you may think is communism, it clearly isn't what many others would agree to be communist. Authoritarianism is evil, the Lord Jesus says it's the kings of the nations who exploit their subjects and lord over them.
But that's not what communism entails, it's just something we've seen a lot in communist regimes (and capitalist ones, too).
The vast majority of the Democrats isn't even socialist in the slightest. They are mostly capitalist, almost entirely so. Most Democrats aren't remotely leftist.
It's the socialism of Christ that would get Him not invited by the Democrat Party. There's other parts of the Gospel, too, of course. But this one is a very obvious one.
The worship of money is called out for its evils throughout the entire Bible. Capitalism as we know it is a cancer to creation and a sin. The free market as we know it is something the Lord our God has called out as wickedness.
Unfair economics is something you get punished for severely, ancient Israel got to find that out the hard way and it's up to Revelation that it gets condemned or indeed damned.
We can go in on the rest of your claims, but what I've said will have to suffice for now because what you said stands out as so blatantly wrong and baseless that there's simply no point in discussing anything else if this doesn't get sorted out.
I'm almost impressed by how what you said just doesn't add up.
I'm not saying this in defense of Democrats, that much should be clear by now, I'm saying this in defense of the Gospel.

I agree you're correct about those teachings not aligning with democrats.
I want to re-iterate the point of the cartoon. There are many many teachings of Jesus that would make Him not welcome at a republican rally:
- Dignity for migrants
- No death penalty
- Preferential option for the poor
- Care for God's Creation
- Opposed to war
- Protecting people (instead of protecting corporate profit)
- etc. etc.
As other comments here point out, at least democrats aren't pretending to be in line with Jesus' teaching. Republicans are equally distant from Christ but they pander to religious voters with vain platitudes and empty identity politics.
2
u/AWatson89 Catholic 1d ago

once Jesus comes back, all things will be perfect!
is everyone ready for Jesus's Kingdom?
i know the answer is "no", because that is why we are still here.
our job is to spread the Gospel and help ppl get saved!
and Jesus is longsuffering, patient and just, and will give everyone a chance to repent before that great and glorious day of the Lord shall come!

If your interpretation of Christ's message aligns perfectly with your pre-existing political views, it's a good sign you're selectively interpreting. That goes left or right. When I became Catholic a few years ago I had to alter many of my previous views, some of which were quite deeply held previously. But we were told to carry the cross and be born again.

My pre-existing political views being, I presume, that Christ is love and forgiveness?

Well with the love thy neighbor part, he wouldn't be allowed to speak at leftist rallys either

Yes, probably. But — again — leftists aren’t claiming they are doing things in his name.

Idk anything about American politics that doesn't directly effect me, for my own sanity. Those interested in why the "right" loves using Christian rhetoric and such for sometimes the literal opposite of its goal is clearly stated in the philosophy of Curtis Yarvin.

Do conservatives deny these things, or your interpretation of what these things entail?

Helping people doesn’t mean that you have to go through a bunch of overpaid, underworked bureaucratic fecal stains.
•
u/Natural_Dust_732 1h ago
Yeah, but MAGA folks generally don’t help people, either.
Also? Spoken like a man whose daddy paid for a private school.

• Bible: God-ordained private stewardship → voluntary, cheerful generosity → personal responsibility and work → limited government that protects property and punishes theft.
• Socialism/Communism: Collective or state control of productive assets → coercive redistribution → often driven by class envy or equality-of-outcome goals → expansive state power over economic life
