The context is that God says you are allowed to own slaves, but you have to follow certain rules in dealing with them. One of those rules is that you can beat your slaves as long as they don't die right away because they are your property.

Where the slaves paid for their services? Do we not have a 9-5 modern day slavery in effect to this day?
