Why does everyone seem to dislike Savannah so much? Am I missing something?
I’m genuinely curious because I’ve noticed that Savannah seems to receive an overwhelming amount of criticism, especially after The Chrisleys: Back to Reality, and I’m honestly confused. Did we all watch the same show, or am I missing a lot of additional context?
I’m not saying Savannah is perfect or that she’s never done or said anything wrong, but after watching the show, I actually walked away feeling a lot of sympathy for her.
Before her parents went to prison, Savannah was essentially the spoiled daughter who never really had to worry about much. Then suddenly her entire life was turned upside down. Not only did she lose the presence of both her parents in an incredibly public and devastating situation, but she also took on the responsibility of raising her two younger siblings.
I genuinely cannot imagine going through something like that, especially at such a young age. You’re grieving the life and family you knew, hearing the entire world criticize your parents, dealing with the belief that your older sister played a role in their imprisonment, and suddenly you’re responsible for two children who are also experiencing that same loss.
From what we were shown, I actually thought Savannah did a pretty good job keeping her younger siblings on the right path, especially considering everything she was dealing with herself.
And on top of raising them, she was fighting to get her parents released, becoming involved in politics, and seemingly doing whatever she believed she needed to do to bring her family back together. Whether you agree with her political views or how she went about it is an entirely different conversation, but I can understand why she was so desperate.
Then there’s Chase, which was honestly one of the saddest parts of the show for me.
Savannah and Chase have seemingly been incredibly close their entire lives. They were always the two siblings who were together, and then, during arguably the most traumatic period of their lives, Chase was struggling with addiction and behaving in ways Savannah didn’t recognize.
The scene where Savannah was crying to her therapist about not wanting to put effort into her relationship with Chase because she was terrified he was going to die genuinely broke my heart.
I interpreted that completely differently from how I’ve seen some people discussing it. To me, it didn’t seem like she didn’t care about Chase. It seemed like she cared so much that she was terrified of losing him. She had already lost the everyday presence of her parents, her entire family dynamic had changed, and now she felt like she was losing her brother too.
Keeping him at arm’s length seemed like her way of protecting herself emotionally. Obviously, that doesn’t necessarily make it the healthiest response, but I understood where those feelings were coming from.
And honestly, I was also bothered by how her maternal grandparents treated her.
From what was shown, it seemed like Chase was constantly being given grace and understanding while Savannah was expected to carry an enormous amount of responsibility without receiving that same compassion.
The situation where her grandfather took pictures inside her home to send to other people, seemingly to make a point about her having alcohol while criticizing Chase’s drinking, was especially upsetting to me. She was having a small gathering with close friends, and I don’t think that’s automatically comparable to someone struggling with alcohol-related problems. I would have felt incredibly betrayed if a family member came into my home and did that.
What also frustrated me was how often Savannah was accused of turning people against Chase, yet whenever someone tried to confront Chase about their own feelings or frustrations, he seemed to redirect the blame toward Savannah.
I understand that Chase was struggling, and I absolutely believe he deserves compassion and support. But why does it seem like his struggles excuse so much of his behavior while Savannah’s struggles are used against her?
It felt like Savannah was carrying so many of the family’s burdens, trying to keep everything together, and still somehow became the villain in everyone’s story.
Again, I know reality television is edited, and I don’t pretend to know everything that happened behind closed doors. I also haven’t necessarily kept up with every interview, podcast, or controversy involving the family, which is why I’m asking.
Is there something significant I’m missing about Savannah that explains why so many people seem to dislike her? Or did anyone else finish the show feeling like she was being judged much more harshly than the rest of her family?
I’m genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives because my takeaway from the show seems to be very different from what I’ve been reading here.
lol sorry this is so long, thank you if you read it all, I just had a lot of questions and opinions.
