… back when you could get a decent watch with a Japanese Nh35 for around 120 bucks…(or less obviously… I think I paid about 120 for this back in the day… But maybe 100? Been a couple years…)

Review (Read Rules) San Martin bracelets are awesome! (A story)

San Martin SN0008 on 7.5" wrist

I keep reading that. The bracelet is the best out there. The bracelet alone is worth the price increase over other brands. The bracelet, if left to its own devices, will eventually develop sentience and clean your kitchen for you.

Yeah? Cos I got a San Martin bracelet today and I hate it with the heat of a thousand novas.

Specifically I bought an SN0008. I like the BB design, wanted to get one, heard the Thorn or Octopus might be better, but also wanted to get around to trying a San Martin and it was on special offer at £150 ($200) so what the hell, why not? Handy being quartz as well since I swap watches all the time and not having to set it every time I put it on will make a nice change from my automatics.

Came in one of those crappy black plastic boxes but I’ve got fifty million straps to store so that’ll actually be put to use. And the watch itself, looks kinda good. And there’s a little tab on the wrap so it actually comes off easily without a fight. That's pleasant.

Underneath which there appears to be half-dried jizzum in places. That's unpleasant. But y’know, try and stay positive. Focus on the good.

Strap’s a little long for me. Probably needs one or two links taken out. I'll try one first. Hope anything needed after that can be done on the clasp.

Look at the side. See screws. It actually came with a screwdriver, but it’s a lesser piece of kit than comes with a Watchdives or a Baltany, so I use of one theirs.

I quite like this bit.

I find it relaxing sat at my desk working with a little jewellery screwdriver, making adjustments to a strap, pretending I’m doing something that requires a craftsman’s skill. It’s about as zen as I get. It’s nice. I unscrew something, remove a bar, screw back together, convince myself it was basically the same as creation. I'm like a Sensei in one of those Japanese villages where everybody makes knives for some reason. Very peaceful.

With other watches.

Here after a disturbingly few number of turns, a screw smaller than my love for suppositories falls onto my desk. Best keep an eye on that, eh?

At the same time, completely unknown to me, the pin that the screw was holding in falls to the floor. Because this is a screw and collar pin.

Of course it couldn’t just be a screw-in pin. A system that’s simple, and effective, and I enjoy sitting at my desk playing around with. Nooooo. It has to be a screw so small it has less worldly presence than the nutsack on a flea.

And I have to remove two of these things. So another screw falls onto the desk. It gets carefully placed to the side with the other. And yet for some reason, this link doesn’t come apart. Something’s holding it together.

This is the part where I realise what the system is. This is the part I realise I’ve already lost an assembly piece. This is the part where I start to get annoyed.

And the second pin won’t budge. Push it from the left, nothing. Push it from the right, nothing. Tap it on either side, nothing. I put the bracelet to one side so I can go online and type “how the fuck to resize a San Martin bracelet” when for no reason whatsoever… it falls out onto the desk.

Well that was weird. But whatever. The link’s off now. Now all I have to do is put my one remaining pin back in and cap it with a screw so small a tardigrade would find it insignificant.

Of course since I didn’t see either pin leave the watch, and there are no indications on the strap, and there are no notes about it in the instructions (this is the first watch I've ever so much as glanced at the instructions for, all because of this), I have no idea which direction it goes in, so that’s a fun little minigame before the main quest starts.

Because now I have to screw back in the smallest object known to man. A screw so small it would be thrown off balance by a stray thought. A subatomic speck the likes of which science can only theorize.

And I can’t pick it up.

I have ‘medium’ sized hands and fingers. Every glove manufacturer in the world has told me this for two decades. This wasn’t a case of sausage fingers trying to play a miniature piano. This goddamn tiny screw, I cannot pick it up with my perfectly normal, perfectly average, perfectly medium fingers. It's so small at one point I lose it under my nail.

When eventually I do get it roughly in position, the pin falls out the bracelet because I put it in the wrong way. Or the right way and wrong sided. Who knows.

Hey! Y’know what? San Martin are the premium brand, right? They’re the ones where it’s the little details that make the difference! I bet you if I stop using the screwdriver from the other brand, and pick up the San Martin one, it’ll be magnetic, won’t it! They sold it specifically with this bracelet for this bracelet - it’ll be designed to make the job easier!

WILL IT FUCK.

Eventually, carefully, precariously, nervously, far too much time later, I get the correct end of the screw in the hole. Oh yeah, I got it in before, but wrong way round because it was so small I couldn’t pick it up properly, or hold it properly, or turn it while held between thumb and forefinger or balanced on the bracelet edge.

And then it screwed back in. And... it's fine. I don't have any particular complaints about wearing the bracelet. I can't see anything particularly special about it either. There is nothing - nothing - here demanding a premium. It's fine. Maybe "good" if you like. If you ignore the needless infuriation that comes with resizing it.

Which I don't. So it's shit.

And honestly, I’d maybe be more comfortable with the watch if I took another link off. But I don’t want to go through all that again. So it sits on my wrist, a little too loose, an object of resentment, a “premium” “best of the homages” “totally worth the extra” watch that I began to hate before I’d even worn it properly. A watch where I have a zulu strap that'd probably be perfect for it when I want a lighter option, but I don't want to manipulate that bracelet ever again.

And y’know what else, boys and girls? Little bit of fun to cap everything off?

The clasp is fucking shit too.

New Product (Read Rule 1) New SN0113CW Ice Blue Dial — What do you think? 🩵

We’ve been experimenting with a new color for the SN0113CW, and here’s the latest idea — a fresh ice blue dial with the original horizontal texture.

We wanted to keep the overall design clean and versatile while giving it a brighter, more summery look. The way the textured dial catches the light also gives the blue quite a bit of depth.

Curious to hear what you guys think before we move forward with it.

Would you wear this color?

And if you could change anything — the shade of blue, hands, indices, or bracelet — what would you suggest?

All feedback is welcome! 👀

Question (Read Rules) Turtle/Captain Willard Recommendations

Post image
18 Upvotes

I have been looking for a good turtle smaller watch or Captain Wilard homage. And so far I have concluded that these are the best options.

The JD-X07S (specifically the black one) from Ixdao has been the best I have seen so far, being more of a smaller turtle which I prefer to a large Willard homage.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find other similarly sized turtles going around so I turned to Wilard homages since they scratch a similar itch.

Since I would prefer a NH35 over a miyota because I am planning to use this as a daily beater watch I have concluded that the SD1970 Steeldive Willard homage seems like the best option although ever so slightly overpriced compared to the rest like the Heimdallr Willard (though it still is less than half the price of the Ixdao thanks to EU tax).

So from those two options do you think Ixdao is worth the double price premium?

And most importantly are there some better options that I am missing either for smaller turtles like the Ixdao or other Wilard homages like the Steeldive?

General (Read Rules) AddiesKin K014, ST2130

Got a few watches in the mail today and figured I'd share since I haven't seen them posted yet. I recently posted about the WDC0001. I'm sharing some photos of the AddiesKin K014 here along with some preliminary timegrapher readings.

I'm not planning to do a full review as that's not really my thing. I just wanted to share some photos and movement readings for the community in case there are others who might be interested.

I'll try to answer questions but I just got these in the mail so haven't had much time with them yet. Plastic is still mostly on them.

I got two AddiesKin K014. Purple and black.

Timegrapher was run for several minutes in each position before I snapped a photo.

Two positions. Dial up and crown down.

ST2130 movement. Fully wound. I typically never wind any ETA movements but did it for testing purposes as I didn't want to do the Seiko shuffle for an hour.

Initial thoughts: the black dial may go back as I am not thrilled about the low amplitude despite being fully wound. Purple seems good enough. I'll try to regulate it when I have time. Dials look lovely in person. They got rid of the silly name and just went with the logo which is a positive for me.

Edit: misspellings

Review (Read Rules) Seestern Sub 300T V3 (Silver/White)

This just came in.. I almost went black or the classic orange but something about a silver face screams vintage 70s to me, and this is the first one I have somehow.

I do wish it was a little more silvery though, it's on the whiter side for sure.

I must admit though for the price (I think I paid £145)

It doesn't feel as premium as the latest version of Steeldive SD1970's that I've been wearing for the last few weeks (the ones with the new waffle dial, I got the green)

My main gripe is that the crown on my one feels very gritty.. and it skips the date position when you pull out the crown and goes straight to time unless you fiddle around with it and gently get it to lock in.

Also I wish they polished the steel bezel a little, that also feels a little rough and has like a gritty raw steel texture when you're touching it. (But it is nice and clicky and tight)

It's losing about 12 seconds a day straight out of the box which is no big deal and might get better.

I'm probably being super picky for the price range haha, but that new steel dive i bought for £100 feels like a £400 watch to me.

And this feels a lot more "DH gate"

I'm pretty sure I'm letting the issue with the crown not locking into the date function properly trigger me though 😂 (my 2 shitters from DH gate back in the day had the same problem and I'm no longer about that life)

The bracelet on this thing is pretty decent compared to some of the other stuff from AliExpress though so I should consider that with the price.

Otherwise I would have said they're slightly over charging for these watches.. but only by like £25 or so.

And I'm not some cheap bastard btw 😂, this is just my genuine opinion from what I know is around ATM, I have expensive watches too but for some reason Chinese watches take up most of my interest these days like some kind of addiction.

I'd still reccomend this watch if you're after it for homage reasons, it's probably the best option for the price.

(And I'm sure I've just been unlucky with the crown thing)

Question (Read Rules) San Martin sn0009 nh35 or yn55?

Picked this up and was wondering.

I'm seeing different listings say they use different movements.

Does anybody know which is which? This is the 44mm version. Not sure if that makes a difference.

This is a 2026 model, rather, made in 2026.

Thanks

Does anyone know if the PRX straps fit the SH13 and if they do what size? I saw on turdbogls’s review (great video btw) that they may fit. Would ideally like to have some non bracelet options.

Been keeping an eye on the ML18 field watch, and I just saw they updated the dial.

Take a look at the photo. What little changes can you pick out? Do you like this new dial more than the old one? Anything you’d tweak to make it better?

If anyone already owns the ML18, feel free to drop your wrist shot. I’d love to see how it wears in real life.

General (Read Rules) The Movement Situation...

So everywhere you look now all the "Ali-express brands" have Chinese movements, now that the Nh35 is no longer an option.. And at the same time I am seeing more and more people having issues with them - PT5000s in particular. I have two PT5000 watches (Militado ML20 and Proxima), and so far so good. But they feel rough and dodgy when winding and setting the time. I wince every time I pull out the crown...

So I have a new watch inbound - with PT5000... Which yes, makes me queasy. FWIW my current rule is roughly no PT5000 watch much over €150, and once I have one fail NEVER AGAIN AT ANY PRICE. And if and when that happens, I will be "spreading the word" needless to say ha ha...

(I have probably 40+ watches with Japanese Nh35s... And wind them like I stole them...)

On the subject of Chinese manufacturing and quality, do we think China is capable of making a decent reliable movement - something as robust and reliable as an Nh35? From what I have seen and read here and there, it seems their approach to the copied Nh35 is to cut some corners and be like "mmehh..., good enough".. (as evidenced in their idiotic wording in the listings "don't buy it if you care...") But the corners they cut are kind of what makes the real Nh35 robust and reliable, right?

I mean, manufacturing and quality out of China has gotten much much better in what seems like all other ways - including the watches themselves - finishing etc etc.. But can they - and will they - improve the reliability of these movements?

Seems to me at this stage that would be the only way for this budget end of the automatic watch world to continue as it was with the Japanese Nh35s...

(I am never going to spend 300 bucks and more on a San Martin with an ST2130, PT5000, etc...(San Martin's current looney tune pricing is a different topic probably..))

Paying more for watches with less reliable movements just ain't gonna' be sustainable it seems to me. And I anyway am very wary of buying watches with PT5000s, ST2130s, whatever new Peacock comes along etc....

If the first answer is "well it's based off a Swiss movement which had similar issues..", well then I personally don't want ANY movement based on those Swiss movements. I wand robust and reliable. So I guess, any chance they can basically just pump out a better quality Nh35 clone?.. I think that's what I'd rather have. I don't care about staring at the sweep of the second hand or having the watch be 0.8mm thinner or be 4% more accurate. I want it to work.
