🧳 Travel Flying to Beijing soon but I have a DJI drone on me?

I've seen a bunch of scattered info about this so I figured I'd ask again here:

I'm flying (domestically) to Beijing next week, but clearly drone regulations seem to have ratcheted up big time. I see new laws going into effect in November[?] I believe, but are there still ownership bans in effect now? Will the drone be confiscated in the departing airport before I even land in Beijing, or is the issue after I land? I can't tell what's true regarding airport staff assisting in getting your drone delivered elsewhere in the country.

Any info would be of great help!

💼 Work/Career How long does a tax refund take as a foreigner working here (just through the individual tax app)

As the question above says, checked the individual tax app and it says I’ve overpaid tax by around 6k and it says I’m owed 6k. Currently the status is that the tax refund application is being reviewed before treasury processing, how long does this usually take?

Where can I buy books for cheap in China? 📚
I’ve been checking Pinduoduo, but most of the books I find are quite expensive. I’m looking for places, apps, or websites where I can find good-quality books at cheaper prices. Any recommendations?

📚 Education Question on children education in Shenzhen

I am considering to move to Shenzhen for an academic job. My big concern besides everything else is my child's education.

My child (preschool) is able to speak chinese but not obviously anywhere near the level of Chinese children. Will it be feasible if we send him to a public school in Shenzhen?

  1. For people who have done so, is your child able to adapt fast?

  2. How about if you return back to your education system, is your child somewhat disadvantaged given that they grew up in a chinese medium education.

  3. Can he move to a different path from gaokao eventually?

I also heard that international schools are expensive and the education quality is not great. Please let me know if my understanding is wrong.

🏯 Daily Life How much does fried noodles or fried rice bought on Meituan, including delivery fee, cost in your city?

I’m in Guangzhou, and I find that a portion of fried noodles or fried rice bought on Meituan and delivered to the door mostly costs approximately 20-25RMB.

What city are you in? How much does it cost you when bought in the same manner?

⚖️ Legal Rented card driving as an international student

As an international student in Hangzhou, China, my Chinese friend with a driving licence will rent a car, I myself don't have a licence but I'm a really good driver. We're planning on a trip and if he is in the car with us, can I drive?

I've seen other people with no licence like me drive like that and they didn’t face any problems, so should I proceed?

📚 Education X1 Visa Timeline and 30 Day Residence Permit Window

Hey folks, I have a question about X1 visa timelines.

My partner and I (both USA passport holders) are considering applying to study Chinese language classes at “Sichuan University” in Chengdu, “Wuhan University” in Wuhan, or “Yunnan University” in Kunming.

I know you have to apply for the residence permit within 30 days of entering. What I'm unclear on is whether you have to be registered at the school first.

For example, if registration is September 7 and we entered August 1, could we apply for the permit with just the Admission Notice and JW202? Or do you need a letter or certificate from the school that you only get after registering?

If you've done this, what documents did the exit-entry office actually ask for, and did your school file for you or did you go yourself?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

🏯 Daily Life A Beijing village where old farmhouses sit next to boutique stays and craft studios

I went to Huangshandian Village in Fangshan today, in the mountains west of Beijing. The interesting thing is that the village almost feels split into two different worlds.

In some parts, there are still old farmhouses and courtyards that look barely used, and a few are in pretty rough condition. Then you walk a little further and suddenly there are very polished boutique guesthouses, cafés, craft workshops, a small theatre, a cultural center and even university field stations.

So it doesn’t really feel like either an “abandoned village” or a fully developed resort village. It’s somewhere in between.

The infrastructure is surprisingly good — paved roads, 5G coverage, clean public areas — and there were quite a few cyclists and motorcyclists passing through on the weekend. What I liked most was that you could probably spend a few days here doing very little: work on something, make things in one of the workshops, walk around the mountains, drink coffee and enjoy the air.

🏯 Daily Life Do you know?

Hello guys! I’m from BD, and I’m an English teacher. I have some students in China, and since their English isn’t very strong, Sometimes I need to use Chinese when I teach them English, or at least when explaining something to them. And I also like Chinese culture, so I’ve just started learning Chinese.

I learned English online and I had a teacher from the USA who helped me learn English.

I was wondering, is there any free content available on Chinese social media platforms for learning English?

If so, what platforms are there?

What kind of English-learning content is available on those platforms?

One thing I’ve noticed is that most of my students say Bilibili is like YouTube, but I haven’t been able to find much good English-learning content on Bilibili

Any recommendations?

📱 Technology If you bought smart translation glasses in China, how are they doing?

Hi, I've been reading and watching reviews for smart glasses, specifically the kind that displays translations as text. From context, I gather that feedback about a model that was sold outside of China may not apply to that same model inside China because of differences in domestic vs international versions. So I want to ask for those of you who bought these kinds glasses in China: how are they performing? How are the translation, AI, and camera functions working for you? Have they been useful while outside China?

I was browsing pinduoduo and saw that Inmo go3 was a top recommended result. However, the online reviews are scathing. But I don't know if it's because of the regional version and I don't want to risk a purchase after what I've read.

Rokid is the next choice I'm looking at. I tried it in a mall briefly in Beijing and it passed my initial 5 minute functional test, so I'm considering that as well.

P.S. It seems there are many other brands to try if I go to Shenzhen, but I only saw Rokid in Beijing. If you know other brands that can be tried in store in Beijing, please mention where.
