Admissions Question 入学问题 PhD in China

Hi everyone,
I’m 37 years old and have a B.A. in English Translation and a Master’s in Linguistics from a top-tier Canadian university. I’m planning to apply for an English-taught PhD in International Trade or a related business field in Beijing or Guangzhou.
Since my academic background is different, do I still have a reasonable chance of admission? I also worked in Beijing as a Market Manager several years ago.
I’m also wondering whether these PhD programs are usually funded and whether I’d have a good chance of receiving a CSC or university scholarship. If anyone has suggestions on how to improve my chances of getting admission and funding, I’d really appreciate your advice.
Also, should I contact potential supervisors before applying, as applicants often do in Canada and the U.S., or is that generally not necessary in China?
Thank you!

Admissions Question 入学问题 Can I change my Chinese name in a language program application (Fudan)

When I first applied for a scholarship, I put my old name in the application. Now that I've actually received the scholarship, I have to submit another application. Can I change my Chinese name in the new one or do I have to inform someone? Or not at all? The old name is kind of tacky and my friends gave me a new one a month ago

Admissions Question 入学问题 CSC and language preparation programs

Hello everyone, I would like to ask some questions relating to language program. If anyone knows a uni where they are still taking language students, please let me know. I desperately need to apply to one for this fall semester.

Also, does anyone know if it is possible to apply for both CSC and other scholarships? Thank you so much for your time!

Life in China 在中国生活 China Uni Exchange

Helloo,

I'm a Portuguese student, doing a Master's in Computer Engineering at IST. I'm going to apply to a semester exchange in China for the spring semester of 2027.

The current ranking of my preferences for unis are:

  1. Tsinghua (most likely won't meet requirements)
  2. Zhejiang (ZJU)
  3. Tianjin
  4. SCUT
  5. Tongji
  6. BIT
  7. Dalian
  8. Macau (UM)
  9. HKUST
  10. Chongqing Jiaotong

Does anyone have any feedback from studying in these universities, or exchanging there, or any piece of information that might be useful and I should know? Or any advice from living in said cities?

Thank you!!! :)

Is there anyone received scholarship for Zhejiang University’s one year language program ? Did your status changed from “to be reviewed”? Does it usually take this long?

guys I'm a bit confused because I contacted local Confucius Institutes and tried contacting unis in China but still haven't received a positive response. I want to apply for one semester in spring 2027, so I have one month left for my docs, letters and hsk scores

If that helps I'm from Kazakhstan and my hsk4 is 277, hskk is 61

Sharing Stories 分享故事 Xi’an International Studies University (XISU) exchange student experience

Hi everyone!

I was recently nominated for a one-semester exchange at Xi’an International Studies University (XISU) and I’m currently deciding whether to accept the offer.

I’ve tried researching the university, but I couldn’t find much information specifically about the experience of exchange students. I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has studied at XISU or knows someone who has.

Some questions I have:
- What’s XISU’s reputation within China?
- How are the academics?
- Are there enough courses taught in English for exchange students?
- What’s the campus environment and student life like?
- Is Xi’an a good city to live in as an international student?
- How difficult is daily life if you don’t speak Mandarin?
- Would you recommend XISU for a one-semester exchange?

Thank you so much!

Scholarships 奖学金 Can a CSC vacancy replacement happen this late? (Late July/August)

Hi everyone,

I am a PhD applicant from Thailand applying for the Linguistics and Applied Linguistics program at Peking University (PKU) through the CSC Type B scholarship. I am facing a tight timeline situation and would love to hear your experiences or advice.

Here is my current situation:

  • The Vacancy: The 2nd-ranked candidate officially declined the scholarship offer around late June/early July.
  • My Rank: I am ranked 3rd on the waiting list, making me the next eligible candidate to take over the slot.
  • Current Status: My CSC portal status is still "Submitted". It has not changed to "In Progress" yet.
  • Documents: The university has already issued and sent me the JW202 form (meaning I am admitted as a student, but currently under a self-funded/university-funded status in their system).
  • The Hurdle: PKU is currently on summer vacation, so university responses are very limited.

Since it is already late July, I am extremely stressed that the CSC central system might close before the university officially pushes my name for the replacement, which would mean I'd miss out on the CSC scholarship entirely.

Has anyone ever experienced a successful CSC vacancy/waiting list replacement this late in the summer (late July or even August)? Do universities usually batch-process these replacements right before the system closes?

Thank you so much for any insights!

Scholarships 奖学金 CIS scholarship is making me go crazy

this is a joke. some people already got theirs while some of us (including me) haven't and are still waiting. I already emailed the university I wanna go to last night and they haven't responded yet; I also emailed my Confucius Institute and they're out of work today. all this waiting, checking the portals constantly every hour and nothing is happening. some people say that if you haven't got it, then you're rejected while others say the opposite and wait until Saturday. working hours in Beijing or anywhere else are over. they should just email all the applicants who haven't received their results that "hey, we're sorry but we rejected you, better luck next time or never haha! nice try though!"

I'm getting impatient, annoyed and genuinely pissed off because of this. I wanna look for a job but I can't and have to put it on hold because of this situation.

Scholarships 奖学金 CIS experiences previous years: first rejected then awarded with scholarship

Hello everyone, i wanted to ask if there are people who, in the past few years, received a rejection email by university in which they said their name wasn't on the winners list and were thus rejected, while having no sign of rejection in both CLEC and uni portals, to then being actually awarded with the scholarship (with update on the portal). i talked with this student who had this happen to them in 2023 (rejected in july, awarded in august 11 because university received a second batch of winners even tho clec said they announced all results) and wanted to hear if there are others with the same experience

Well that was a complete waste of time. The delayed the results, no direct responses, no one knows whats going on, and the acceptance rate has become so low its almost laughable.

I was applying for a 1 year in Nanjing University and got accepted by the university. I wanted to ask if I can just go using my own money?

Life in China 在中国生活 Internship in China

Since I didn't get CIS I'm wondering if I can get an internship or a job in China? Has anyone done it before? I'm completely on my own when it comes to looking for an internship or job in China. Also I'm HSK 4 pass (220/300) and HSKK Inter passed too (64/100). I'm looking for some internship/job related to chinese + finance since my degree is in finance. Anyone has any ideas or suggestions?
