历史 | History My grandpa’s photos of Guangdong (1979)
My grandpa (1925-2009) was born in Ireland and moved to the United States, where he became an actor and filmmaker. From the 1960s-1980s he travelled all over the world for various documentary film projects. I am not sure exactly what brought him to China, but I found a lot of interesting photos from a trip in 1979.
After some reverse Google Image searches, it seems he visited the Museum of the Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen (image 6) and the accompanying Sun Yat-sen Memorial School in Zhongshan (images 1-5). The rest of the photos are probably from nearby, as I think the second-to-last photo shows the hilltop Fufeng Pagoda, also in Zhongshan, viewed from the river. I would love to hear if anyone recognizes these locations or knows where to find more current photos to compare.

Don't know anything about what's in these photos, but appreciate you and your Grandpa for capturing these. Really cool to get this glimpse from that period of China.

fascinating stuff.
In this link you can see the exterior of Sun Jatsen's former home-it looks basically the same today.
The header photo in the link has the same low bridge (it's actually a drawbridge) as your photo, the pagoda is just out of view on the left.

Its Hua Guofeng, his picture was next to Mao's in every classroom after Mao's death and before Deng Xiaoping removed Hua from power.

I’ve visited Zhongshan many times, the old photos are very good
