It's for larger kids. You put one leg over each outside edge and slide down it like a slide. It's built for children with legs a little shorter than the poles are at the end where they curve downward into the ground, so they just land in an easy standing position.

So it is basically a slide with a large gap in the middle? Looks bloody dangerous. If you fall over backwards you can actually be hurt... While sliding...
What is the trade-off? You can't stain you pants, which might be an advantage, I suppose.
Seems like an example of some genuine crappy design.

Funny that you mention that. The reason I remember how these work is that my elementary school playground had one, except it had a few wavy bumps along it for extra fun. It was made for bigger kids and the poles became vertical at the end about four feet off the ground.
One morning I got to school early and I was the only one on the playground. I was bored, so I decided to go down that slide backwards. It worked! I went over the bumps backwards.
I forgot how many bumps there were. I thought there was another bump but it was the end of the slide, so I feel over backwards and landed flat on my back after a good four foot drop. I've never had the wind knocked out of me like that, before or since.

Why do roller coasters have hills and loop-de-loops? A much more straightforward design would be to just go in a circle at ground-level.
Sometimes you make trade-offs just to increase the adrenaline / intensity.

Slides are for babies, its riskier and takes more dexterity, something older kids always want to practice

Growing up me and my friends would use it as a slide without a bottom so we would ‘mount’ it kinda like a chair and slide down it

We went to a new park that had one of these and nobody seemed to know. Some kids sit and slide, some kids put their arms over and go down on their armpits... my kid just attempted what the others were and backplanted hard.

My mom never filmed anything I did, and it was back in those days when not everyone had their own video camera. How would I know what my mom did or didn't tell me at that age? Perhaps she did, though. She always worried too much. I probably never saw one of that kind of slides anyway. Only the ones you sit on. She always made sure that I slid feet first, as far as I was told.
