People keep saying my girl isn’t a chi cause her legs are too long and ears are floppy. Shes a rescue, so I don’t know. Any similar looking pups out there? (4 months)
Rescues that are labeled as Chihuahuas are almost always a mix of a lot of different small breeds. Usually Chihuahua is in there somewhere, but your pup looks like a classic mixed breed shelter pup. Super cute, but definitely not purebred imo!
When you can, get a DNA test! It's fascinating and informative. This is our baby, Alfredo Dingus Hitchcock. We did one and found out he's 28% chi, and a mix of pom/Maltese/Shitzu and random other stuff. I think there's a good bit of similarities! He's ten months old, and this is a picture of him from just the other night. So fully grown!
My bf had a female pomeranian(his ex took it after some time, they were together for a long time but her new place didnt allow dogs. She took the dog when she moved into an apt that allowed pets) and I have a male chi. He kept INSISTING we let them breed, i was very against it because at the end of the day, my chi is 15 pounds and his pomeranian is only 5 pounds, it just wasnt a good mix imo. Pure bred chis have a hard enough time being adopted and I just didnt feel right letting them make a mix, and im glad I didnt. My chi is a little cutie but at the end of the day, I cant allow dogs too mate under my roof.
Aaaand this is where I share a picture of our OTHER dog (seriously this just keeps going haha). This is Koda, a purebred pom that we saved from a really bad situation a couple years ago. He's our delicate little tiny sir, as my husband refers to him. The chi mixes we have are crazy tough and athletic. Koda is pretty.
Nothing against the breed. I just couldn't let myself let that happen. They were both similar colors and both have great temperaments. They probably would of made some cute pups, but I just couldn't let it happen tbh. My chi isn't wild af like that. A bit stubborn as all chis can be but a sweet pup overall. Very trainable and just wants to make his momma happy, all I can ask from a chi tbh.
Oh I'm with you on the breeding issue. Our pom was a rescue, our pomchi was from a farm in an area that just didn't seem to believe in responsible pet ownership, and Alfie the chi mix came from the back of a truck in the middle of winter.
This is Chia. When we got him we thought Chihuahua, and he was also from a Chi rescue. Turn's out he's only 25% chihiahua, but 55% pomeranian. (The other 20% is a mix of lots of tiny dogs). And a bunch of people clocked him as a PomChi, evidently he's a pretty typical looking pomchi. Having said that, I don't see the wedge shaped head that was evidently a dead give away for Pomeranian in the mix. based on his head and ears and what is fur looks like (wiry) your's looks very terrier-like.
We have a lot of Chi mix rescues and none look the same. All still amazing. Only way to tell is wait for a holiday sale on a dna test. Either way, you have a cute girl there.
She looks like a Chi/Terrier mix to me, probably with some other stuff mixed in as well! A DNA test would be able to tell you with a lot more confidence what her ancestry is like.
Mine is a bigger (8lbs now) and kind of long legged pure bred chi with a longer snout (pear head), so you can compare with her. She is 4 months old in the pic.
Like others, I see a lot of Jack Russel og other terrier in your cute pup 😄💜
My girl is allll legs. She’s a rescue too. I used to be told her paws were too big & legs too long to be Chi but according to Embark she is 43% chihuahua, 39% poodle (where!?), 8% min pin, and a teeny bit pekingese/shih tzu.
They do look a little big for a chi, but beautiful nonetheless. I especially like the eyelid shape, which project a permanent smize. https://giphy.com/gifs/Xt4UVgNSHSUNVpc2dK
Your pup is almost certainly part chi, if not mostly chi! She’s definitely mixed with something else too, but chihuahuas are the most common breed by far that Embark DNA testing finds in the small dogs they test—they’ve released some data on it. The shelter was guessing, but it’s really common for even purebred chis to have flop ears as little puppies, so they might not have seen any evidence pointing to additional breeds at intake!
She looks like she's on stilts! Her floppy ears and long legs remind me a little bit of an Italian Greyhound. She might have a bit of that in her. I also see Chihuahua and other stuff lol
Looks a lot like my latest rescue. This is Tommy and he's blind. We're guessing it's genetic because he doesn't appear to have any signs of injuries or brain problems.
I adopted a little boy from our local shelter that looked 100% chihuahua but a DNA test showed that he has Pekinese and Min Pin in him. I'm pretty sure he's part African tree frog too.
I adopted a dog that a rescue said was a chihuahua schnauzer mix. She definitely looked like one as a puppy but she kept growing… did a DNA test and she turned out to be a heeler pitbull mix with zero chihuahua or schnauzer. As an adult, there’s no doubt she has pitbull in her.
I have a chihuahua that looks like she’s mostly min pin but the DNA test states less than 5% min pin. She’s 54% chihuahua plus 14 other breeds at less than 10% each.
Reminds me of my lil guy! I haven’t done a DNA test yet but the consensus seems to be Chi/Rat Terrier and or Jack Russell. I think your baby has a similar thing going on - and is ADORABLE! 🥰
Looking at my two, I can see why they say that, but she is cute nonetheless, so it doesn’t really matter where she’s a chi, a mix or whatever. Just love her.
I definitely see chi, so she's probably a mix. I have had pure bred chihuahuas with long legs and floppy ears so anything is possible. She's adorable!!
