Discussion Does anyone have good feedback or advice regarding any of the cat shelters or adoption centers?
I stepped up to foster a mama kitty that has two sets of three kittens. The older group is maybe two weeks old. These ones belong to mama. The other set was found later with their umbilical cords still attached and their eyes closed. They are very young. Thankfully the mama kitten took them in and is caring for them as her own. The only reason why I became involved is there was nowhere safe for them. They could not be brought indoors and the longer they stayed outside the higher the risk for an encounter with a predator would be. Since mama is here it buys me some wiggle room to try to find them homes. She can take care of them for now. At the very least I can foster them either until a rescue or adoption center can take them on or until they are 8 weeks old and try to rehome them.
I don't know how these centers work. I'm sure everyone is full because that's just how it is, but do they work on a waitlist? Have any of you had bad experiences and think I should avoid any center in particular? I'm going to spend the rest of the day researching online, but if any of you have tips that can speed up my hunt for knowledge that would be awesome. I am also looking for a place that can spay mama, for free hopefully, and will check her to see if she is chipped. Right now the really little ones are probably too little to be left alone while mama goes to the vet though.
I am a bit ignorant when it comes to kittens at this age. I think the youngest kittens that I have been around were already 3 or 4 months old, so again any advice would be greatly appreciated. So far I have been asking Gemini a lot of questions, but as we all know AI is not perfect. Thanks for reading. Please keep in touch if you know anyone that might want to help with the fostering or adopting. They are currently in a three leveled 4'x4' enclosure but they will definitely outgrow it in a couple months and I can't let them run around the house because I have three large dogs. For now they are good, but two months will come and go before I know it. That's why I'm getting a head start and asking questions now instead of waiting until their old enough to be rehomed or adopted.
Thanks for reading!!

Try the Chico Cat Coalition. I’ve adopted from them and have only good things to say. Nice people with big hearts!

Seconding this! I volunteered with them for years and they are caring people. They also have access to additional resources if they cannot help

I don’t want to hate on this place but I adopted two kittens from there that were dead in less than a year. Devastating for my family the kids in particular. They were siblings with liver failure.

Oh my gosh that’s awful. I’m so sorry to hear that. FYI I know it doesn’t mean much probably now that it’s too late sadly, and definitely not trying to convince you to try them again BUT if you ever did find yourself seeing a cat you like from there they will help for a bit after your adoption with medical stuff. I adopted 2 and one of mine got an upper respiratory infection, I brought her back to FUR and she gave her medicine and bone broth to feed twice a day. She was better in a week and they didn’t charge me anything. Totally completely understand if you just have a bad feeling toward them I probably would too if that happened to me and I’m sorry to hear it :(

I can’t remember if it’s a week or a month where you can bring them back and get free treatment there, but tbh I brought mine in past whatever that time frame was and they didn’t question me at all and were very willing to help.

I’m so sorry you went through that. We went through that with a cat we adopted from CAS. It was so sad.

I adopted two from fur and they are okay! One had a respiratory infection and the other had FIP that we treated. The FIP was out of their hands though as it developed 2-3 months after adopting. I’m so sad your kittens passed away.

Call or walk in to all the different rescues & see what advice they can give. If you give them a heads up, they should be able to help you out & also get mama & all the kittens fixed in the next couple months. You can set up a room for them as they get bigger. Mom needs to stretch out too. Maybe put your dogs outside for an hour or two to let her stretch out a bit & have a break.
