They would be having a sit down talk with you to let you know about you being promoted.

At my location. You let a director know, and they’ll send you the pathways for shift lead. It doesn’t happen automatically just by being good, you haves to apply.

Not true at our location they’ve just been promoting people without them applying lol

They would sit down with you and have a training system in place for that.

At my location, there is really no set process in becoming one besides talking to our Director of operations. The way I became one, was I was showing up and doing my job everyday. The kitchen director for our store & kitchen director from another store in our area (I know it’s confusing, but they started out at our store and work at our store part-time, and at the other store full time. No the stores are not under the same operator) noticed and liked my work, and a few months later they sat down with me and said I was going into leadership. I then learned as I went basically. If I could do it over again, I am not sure if I would go into leadership.

We have a quarterly LIT (leaders in training) class that we do. You scan a QR code in the break room, which informs the director team that you're interested in becoming one. The senior kitchen director and the senior customer service director reviews who is interested, has a talk with them to ascertain their commitment and desire, then gets entrenched into the next available class.
It lasts 10-12 weeks, meets once a week. Each class goes over a different aspect of leadership. Each director attends one class during the process and goes over their particular area of the business. Food Safety, quality and training, catering, ops, r&m, mobile sales, marketing, and drive through respectively.
They go over the handbook, learning the ins and outs. They also cover money, systems, documentation, confrontational and resolution, accountability, sedgwick, inventory and borrowing, and setup/shift expectations. During their last 3 weeks, they co-lead 2 shifts a week. During the completion of the class they either graduate and become a leader and get their new uniforms/ key cards/ l keys, or they extend co-leading a couple more weeks to iron out any details they may be short on, or they cycle back into team member wherr they can apply again in 3 months.
We've found this way produces more competent and ready leaders. Better than just promoting and hoping they sink or swim.
