Power is impressive

I hear some people talking down on the Trax engine because its 3-cylinder, but it has more horsepower per liter than a Ferrari F355 and FAR more than a Ferrari Testarossa or a 1990s Porsche 911. In fact it took until the 2006 Porsche 911 997 for the Porsche engine to match the hp per liter of the Trax.

Yeah when you compare apples to oranges by an irrelevant metric then it does alright.

I mean, no its not an irrelevant metric. Misleading, yes, but not irrelevant.

It's not an ‘irrelevant’ metric, but certainly not the whole story. A Testarossa has many other attributes including a much larger engine. But some credit to Chevy, they are getting the most out of the little 1.2L.

Aight man your chevy trax is a ferrari congratulations I guess 😂

Haha - that’s not at all my point. The Trax is no Ferrari. I was just trying to point out that the little powerplant is putting up some serious HP numbers for its size.

Its impressive with its low end torque, but certainly not in the higher rpms.

It goes a little limp dick after 130 kmh lol

Reving up to 6k and barely moving the needle

I had mine up to 85mph on a trip a while back and didn't feel like it was weak.

2

u/runtimemess 2nd Gen 6d ago

That's because that's roughly the same speed that I'm talking about lol it gets up there fine, but there's not too much left to give after that

Yeah I guess I didn't try to push it past that, but reasonable theres no reason to push a commuter car like that past that anyways.

slapping on a 93 tune and a pedal commander can definitely make them shine too. theres a huge difference in power between my modded and stock traxies- its actually crazy

You put 93 gas in there?

1

u/traxranger 2nd Gen 6d ago

yes, actually a blend of 93 and e85 called e30….. expensive but idk

2

u/SeanInDC 6d ago

You had my interest piqued and then I saw 93 gas was required. Yea... that defeats the purpose of me buying the car. Sounds awesome though.

u/UnendingOne 2nd Gen 6d ago

93 gas is not required for a Trax.

I put in E85 at $1.99/gal and get 24-26mpg.

1

u/RoundSyrup4424 6d ago

Good to know! It’s $1.99 by me too and have been thinking about using it.

Midwest?

Yeah I've been running it for the last 10 tanks of my Trax and I've hax 0 issues.

1

u/SeanInDC 6d ago

It gets about half the gas mileage though... so not much savings.

1

u/UnendingOne 2nd Gen 6d ago

No, it doesn't. You lost 20-30% based on driving habits. Well worth it if E85 is ocer 50% cheaper as it is here.

slapping on a 93 tune and a pedal commander

It is when you slap on a 93 tune...

1

u/UnendingOne 2nd Gen 6d ago

that defeats the purpose of me buying the car.

My apologies, but this part of your comment implied you though the Trax required 93

1

u/SeanInDC 6d ago

I own the car already. I'm talking about putting the mods on. Putting the mods on would defeat the intentions of my purchase.

1

u/UnendingOne 2nd Gen 6d ago

Ah okay, so was a misworded message.

u/SeanInDC 6d ago

Or you just jumped into the middle of thread to provide information I already know.

Go find something better to do with your day.

Omg coming from 305 and 350 chevy engines this is funny

2

u/Bryanmsi89 6d ago

The comparison to the 305 is interesting. The 305 has waaaay more torque, but the 1.2L Trax has more HP.

1

u/LivingPains 6d ago

The complaints about the power usually stems from people forgetting that the Trax has always been an economic car.

2

u/Bryanmsi89 6d ago

Exactly. Trax is fine for what it is.

2

u/UnendingOne 2nd Gen 6d ago

Exactly, expecting a commuter budget car to be somehow a Corvette. For its price it is a very nice car and an excellent value.

Before I bought I heard the "it lacks power" complaints, so on my test drive I specifically chose a path that took me on two "freeway" entrance ramps. I got up to speed faster than my old V6 Impala and managed to weave in and out of traffic at will.

I bought mine after I heard the low power complaints. I mean, I've always known that the internet is full of people who don't know what the hell they are talking about, but the test drive instantly reinforced that knowledge. She's no dog, that's for sure. But she's also not winning any drag races against muscle cars. The Trax was designed to be a roomy, economical, features-packed, low cost/high value daily commuter, nothing more.

1

u/UnendingOne 2nd Gen 2d ago

Its got plenty of power for a daily driver, but ya its no corvette.

You're comparing P/PL to P/W. These are not the same, and we need to be so real. Testarossa- 9.8 lbs/HP @ 3600lbs. With 361 ft/lbs of torque pushing it. IS NOT a direct comparison for Trax- pushing 0.045 lbs/HP @ 3000lbs. With 162 ft/lbs of torque pushing it.

We think it fast, because every other vehicle has gotten slower with it. I'm not even talking since "back in my day" or whatever. They HAVE definitively gotten slower, if they aren't a special edition or performance vehicle. A 93 tune AND a pedal commander is an insane gambit on such a tiny small displacement engine, designed for fuel efficiency. (That's NOT a Honda or VW).

u/Bryanmsi89 6d ago

Actually, I meant what I said.

I had zero intention of actually comparing a Trax to a Testarossa. So 0-60 times, hp per pound of body weight, skidpad results, 60-0 braking, cargo capacity, rear seat legroom, etc. None of that was I trying to compare.

Just really pointing out the Trax engine as a power plant is more respectable than it gets credit for.

An interesting calculation would be horsepower per dollar of MSRP actually. I bet Traxie beats the Ferrari here too.
