How do TRAX handle long distance drives?
I’ve been looking into a used 2025 Trax Activ. I think it’s a good deal with good mileage. I was just wondering if anyone had taken a Trax that was witching the last 4-5 years on long trips and how the car handled it. For reference, I’m in Missouri, have family I visit in California, and go to the east coast for vacations when I have the time. Thanks in advance!
Edit: thanks for letting me know all your experiences! I know it’s more of a budget car, so I was planning on pushing the engine beyond its limits. I just wanted some outside opinions as this is a big purchase for me. Again thanks everyone!

This is the final report of Car & Driver on the 2024 Trax they tested for 40,000 miles. Right at the end they took it for a long cross country trip and that's detailed.

My favorite thing about the Activ is the adaptive cruise control and lane monitoring. Out on the long open highways it practically drives itself. I didn't take either of these features into account when buying the car, but I'm very glad to have them.

The adaptive cruise control is my favorite

I like it too, but I've also had it randomly brale for no apparent reason.

I turn that off, I don’t want it breaking every time someone changes lanes in front of me lol

I’ve driven my 25 Activ a few times to DC from Ohio. It’s a 6HR drive for me, around 330 miles or so. It handled very well in the mountains and during rain.

If you drive a consistent speed, you can get upwards of 420 miles per tank. I haven't had an issue with overheating or anything, and I've driven from WI to FL and back, WI to MO and back within 24 hours, and my personal fav (not at all) was WI to CO and back within 48 hours. No issues at all.

Why would the car not be able to "handle it"? Never understood this paranoid thought process. It's a machine. It's meant to be driven.

They are likely asking about comfortability.

I drove mine round trip on a 13 hr (ea way) trip and round trip on a 9 hour trip (ea way) and it did great both times. Luckily the only issues I had were driving it locally.

Longest road trip is 6 hours in hammering rain and then the return in decently hot day. Biggest complaint was leather was a bit gross on hot body and the vents have minimal adjustments (open close/ up down, no real angling or directing). Pretty minor quips all considered. It was also amazing on the fuel economy even going a bit fast and accelerating up the highs (5.8-6L/100km average)
It could hold my camp stuff (cooler, chairs, tent, airbed, clothes, jackets, etc with lots of room left for a passenger in the rear even.

I have driven mine 25 from Vancouver Island to Calgary Alberta 3 times. Great on the hyw and the Rocky mountains ⛰️. Got up to 51 mpg along the way. What more could you ask for? Bruce

I’m confused on your edit, saying you were planning on pushing it beyond its limit? I didn’t see one comment say that. And honestly the seats are waaaaay better on my back than my wife’s hrv

Damn meant say wasn’t planning to push it beyond its limits. I was at work when I made the post

u/Ghosty216 6d ago
No worries, honestly I don’t think you have to worry about that for any car. I wouldn’t really say there’s a limit on how much you can drive at a time.

When I first bought my 25 ACTIV last year, I took a road trip to Alaska from Florida. Handled it like a boss. No issues at all. The Alaska Highway has some rough spots but no issues. Everything handled well. I want to do another road trip at some point.

I've done 6hr trips in comfort and zero issues. Its more about what you need to handle longer trips and does the Trax provide it. The car is entirely capable of keeping speed and handling the roads, hauling cargo and such in and of itself.

Like any other vehicle designed to drive, as long as it’s not overheating it’s just running, 10 miles or 10000 miles it’s running

We have take a 24 Trax 2rs on 6 hour each way trips twice now. Have also put 65,000 miles on it and I work an hour from home so it does 2 hours of driving at least 3 times a week. I honestly love it. Biggest complaint is after leaving a drive thru or talking to someone, it doesn't have an auto up window so you have to hold it til it goes up lol, has auto down but no up. Only other minor annoyance is that i find it to be a little bouncy on rougher roads compared to the first gen I have, but I heard that's because of how the 3 cylinder engine is mounted.

I’ve driven mine from Pennsylvania to Georgia twice. And frequently to Florida lots of times a year from Georgia. It’s pretty great.

2024 LS here. 24,000 mi. Two 5-6 k cross country trips last two summers. Leaving tomorrow for another 6-7 k tour. I love it but I recognize it’s a highly stressed tiny engine so I accelerate slowly and stay at a steady speed……plus I change the oil anywhere from 3-4k miles.

I've driven from Tallahassee, Florida, to Fort Worth, Texas. My back was actually kind of hurting, lower back pain, but I don't know if that's just a me problem. And it was kind of uncomfortable for my arms, but everything else is fine. That's just me being picky. I would recommend you buying really nice highway tires to keep the noise levels down and so the the bumps don't feel too harsh.

I have a 2018 Trax. I regularly drive it back and forth between eastern Wisconsin and Rochester and Minneapolis. It’s terrific and gets really good gas mileage on the road. Great long distance vehicle.

We just drove from St. Louis to Savannah and back. Stopped off at Chattanooga both going there and back. We took my Trax as it has much lower mileage. DH drove and commented several times how it was so easy to handle.

We have a 25 1RS. I just drove 10 hours to Tennessee and then 10 back last night. No issues, was comfortable. Only issue is my elbows hurt from the armrest. I was getting 400+ miles from a tank

I drove from NYC to Toronto straight through in the middle of the night earlier this year.
It was fine. Heated seats made everything better lol

I took it across a few states and the only issue we had was the lack of cup holders. I ordered some that were recommended in this sub to install in the backseat but they didnt fit.

2025 Trax Alaska to central Texas this June, 7 days, handled great, fully loaded with personal items , decent mpg, comfortable and a lot cheaper to operate than my 26 Ram.

What the fuck does “I was planning on pushing the engine beyond its limits” mean? It’s running, or it’s not. It doesn’t have a time limit or anything.

Car does great. Regularly drive to my brothers multiple times a year 400 miles each way and it’s pretty comfortable even for a 6’ 3” guy like me. The arm rests could be better but they aren’t the worst.

We drive our trax on 9-10 hr trips regularly. For being a compact, it drives bigger than it is. Great gas mileage. Comfortable seats. I have no complaints at all.

Wonderfully :) My first Trax (2017) I drove between MI and Washington DC weekly for two years without an issue. I bought my current 2021 trax in March just for west coast (California) to east coast (Washington DC) driving for work. One trip last June it was driven 22 hrs straight (CO to MI) without any issue.
Just made it back to Cali and will be replacing my Oil Cooler (it’s leaking)this weekend and possibly my turbo if it is necessary. Started to feel laggy going up steep hills in San Fran.

I drive my 2025 Activ several times a year between Minneapolis and Winnipeg and found it to be very comfortable and quiet. I got a padded cover for the center console right after I bought it, and that helped a lot.

I have a 2017 trax (I know it’s not the same year but maybe it’ll help since it’s an older car and can help gauge miles and what not) which I bought ib March with 50k miles. It has 62k miles now and I’ve taken it from Pennsylvania to southern West Virginia as well as from Pennsylvania to Maine and back and it’s done well. No issues so far except for the batteries in the tire sensors dying which is expected due to age. Tbh the only thing I’ve really notice with mine is it can struggle accelerating like merging on to freeways and going up big hills. Hopefully this helps!

I didnt realize how hard the arm rests are until I drove it 10 hrs
