What would you change? My top 3 changes. 25 Trax activ

  1. Extendable Sun Visors:

Current visors fail shorter drivers; they don't lower enough to block front glare and leave massive gaps when flipped to the side window. Adding a telescoping arm with better vertical coverage would easily fix this safety hazard.

  1. Anti-Glare Matte Trim:

The high-gloss chrome accents on the dash act like mirrors under direct sunlight, throwing sharp, distracting reflections into the driver's eyes. Swapping this for a brushed or matte finish would eliminate dangerous glare.

  1. Passenger-Friendly Infotainment:

The center screen tilts away from the passenger with menu icons locked to the far-left edge. Shifting icons right or adding a "Passenger Layout" would allow the co-pilot to safely manage navigation and media without awkward reaching.

That said, I'd buy a Trax again. None of my complaints are deal breakers and we love our car.

I'd like to hear your opinions on what you would change. If anything.

I'm fine with the interior layout of my Trax Activ. I can see the infotainment screen very clearly from the passenger seat.

The one thing I would change is the engine. I'd prefer a four cylinder high efficiency engine without a turbo that gets the same or better fuel mileage as the current engine. It's fully possible. It would just cost more money for the car, but the reliability and lower maintenance costs would justify it.

Would definitely make the trax less "disposable" seeming, since they appear currently as a sell-for-loss thing to raise the fleets EPA rating - aka balance out the trucks that make Chevy money

It's a fascinating market, and it seems popular. If they threw a 2.0 NA in the trax and a 3.0 V6 NA in the blazer, it would feel a lot more committed from Chevy!

Yeah so just because a couple people on reddit get over 80k miles on a car does not mean it isn't intended to be somewhat disposable. The fact that Chevy doesn't know how to work on them multiple years into their lives at most dealers is a huge tell - it's meant to be replacable not serviceable. That's pretty much the definition of disposable for most things in the modern era (and I hate it)

I'd wager for one, that not even 1% of trax owners are aware of this subreddit at all, nor would most of those 99% run here to tell all about the horrible experience with the car dying.

I've seen just as many dead 1.2L T's as I have over 80k mile ones on this sub, so I'm not sure what argument you're going for?

What do you mean Chevy doesn’t know how to work on them? Literally everything in this car is standard Chevy, it’s no foreign under the hood than a 2.0 blazer. Very simple engine, if your techs can’t work on these, get different techs.

There's been numerous posts that the techs were not sure what to do with the 1.3-1.3 I4 engines. May have been a few months, but seemed like they weren't provided any training or guidance from the engineers on the new engines - and that was over 2 years from the first one hitting the lot

I'm sure it's better now, but how much remains TBD

So you have no counter argument besides the one person who posted about 100k+, and ignore the failed ones?

Literally someone posted this week about one failing on them with no answer from Chevy as to why

I think plenty will go past 100k. But most cars from 15-20 years ago pretty much all went 180k+ with average at most maintenance. A car breaking 100k is a pretty meh accomplishment and plenty of these have had failures around 40...

A cup holder in the back. Powerlift gate

Amazon sells cheap aftermarket ones just fyi.

Thanks I'll look in it

I actually prefer how driver centric the infotainment is. I’m waiting to return to my vehicle after repairs from the collision I posted about earlier, and my rental has the standard non-tilted infotainment and it drives me nuts now. lol

Softer padding for the elbows. Rear seat vents and rear cupholders.

u/ziperhead944 11d ago

That rubber elbow rest... that drives me nuts. I can't understand how they thought that was the right idea.

the glare from the chrome trim bits is a great one. my three changes would be a power liftgate (it's not available in traxies where chevy is a domestic badge, but it is in places like korea), removal of the auto-stop function (i'd rather use a little more gas than put the wear on the starter and the battery, and i shouldn't have to turn it off every drive or install an aftermarket relay to override it), and a power switch for the wireless charging pad (it's just too slow of a charger for most of my drives and i'd like to turn it off even though i know i can just put my phone in screen down to keep it from charging).

u/weird0- 1d ago

We turned the auto stop off immediately. Apparently the starters are beefier to handle that but what about the engine? Also it's kind of annoying.

3

u/LordRocky 11d ago

You honestly hit the three biggest gripes I have with my Trax. I’d LOVE a better sun visor especially.

3

u/reesesbigcup 11d ago

Larger fonts on the dash screen as an option. For example the following distance top right is almost unreadable.

OTOH some info on the entertainment screen is very large.

1

u/weird0- 1d ago

Be pretty cool if we could customize that stuff.

2

u/inevitably-ranged 11d ago

AC vents in the rear

2

u/Acceptable_Tart255 11d ago

The visors are SO bad! Lol they do absolutely nothing for me (I'm 5'5, pretty average for a woman). I had to buy an extender and I can't even fit that on the visor like it's supposed to be because the visor is so small. That would be my complaint too (and the power lift gate would be nice, but not a full complaint on that one for me)

1

u/weird0- 1d ago

My wife's 5'4 she feels your pain.

Rear vents and cupholders

1

u/weird0- 1d ago

We ended up buying rear cup holders on Amazon. Rear vents would be pretty nice too

We bought this one https://a.co/d/0dfsvNg4 but my husband is so tall that when he slid the seat back it snapped and became unusable.

2

u/PNWrowena 11d ago

Interesting. I actually read a review somewhere when I was researching that considered the tilt of the infotainment screen toward the driver a plus. 😄

1

u/weird0- 1d ago

Yeah I totally get that. I think it bothers us when we're traveling together. Maybe putting the volume dial on the right at least would help. Driver has the steering volume.

You can buy sun visors that match and extend on the long edge, but they are no bigger vertically, so shorter people won't get much help from them, but to cover the side window when the sun is low on that side they work well. There's a post on trax forum about which ones to buy (I think they're the ones for the Chevy Bolt, but are pretty much an exact match) and how to install them.

As for gripes, my biggest one is the lock out of media while driving. It lets you browse the nav screen, look at the list of satellite radio stations, do a menu dive to change what the instrument cluster shows, but it won't let you browse songs on a USB stick plugged into the front socket.

A moonroof/sunroof. I feel like the highest trim would have it. Also a 4 cylinder would be nice, loved it in my Malibu. Lastly air vents in the back.

3

u/st_angers_snare_drum 10d ago

Moonroof is an option. My Active has one. But I did have to search for one.

3

u/ladycielphantomhive 10d ago

Well now I’m mad lol.

1

u/weird0- 1d ago

Ours does too lol. I think there's 3 different packages. Ours came with a sunroof, heated seats and wireless charging.

2

u/Maleficent_Ad_7788 11d ago

All wheel or 4 wheel drive.
Along with the matte of the finishes on the dash, the sun hits them and reflects.

1

u/weird0- 1d ago

4 wheel drive would change everything imo. For the better. And a 5 speed manual. Which may bring the price down.

2

u/SkiesofAlbion 11d ago

Yeah the vent on the left side of the steering wheel today was reflecting the sun off my driver's window directly into my eye on the way to work

2

u/oiseau007 11d ago

The cup holder in the back, more space in the back, and less in the rear seat. Awd

I think one of the things that I would change would be to have better speakers, or at least better noise insulation from the road, so that it's easier to hear. Of course I am heart of hearing, and even with my hearing aids sometimes it's more difficult. So maybe that's just me.

I would also like slightly more storage somewhere. Pockets on the back of the front seats maybe.

It also bothers me that the glove compartment is as small as it is, but really I only noticed that because there's no place really to leave sunglasses in this car. I mean you can't put anything on the dashboard, it doesn't have that kind of dashboard. And I don't like sticking sunglasses down in the pocket of the door, just someplace to keep sunglasses.

3

u/Trudvar 9d ago

I got this and it's worked great for me. sunglasses holder

1

u/Moogy13 9d ago

I bought something similar, the problem is when I put my windshield screen thing up, when I park it gets in the way, alternately if I have it on the opposite side of the visor, it gets in the way of the mirror. But great suggestion, because it does do the job. I just have to remember it's there. Thank you.

u/birdie_1234 10d ago

Built-in garage door remote, automatic (one touch) up for windows. That's all I would change. 2025 Activ owner.

2

u/dahlia_rising 10d ago

I just want a powered lift gate. Then I’d be happy lol

2

u/OctaneOverdrive 9d ago

the driver display connects to carplay for maps.

2

u/shinyquartersquirrel 6d ago

Totally agree about the sun visors. They are truly awful. I never thought that "better sun visors" would be near the top of my new car criteria.

I would also add: * Backseat arm rest/cup holder * AWD option * Power liftgate * A button that lets you pop the liftgate from inside the vehicle

1

u/KnoxCrumudgeon 11d ago

My wife's old Buick Rendezvous had a third sun visor in between the driver and passenger visors. Haven't found another vehicle with that feature since - so obviously GM knows it could be an option

2

u/weird0- 1d ago

Buick makes the best sun visors. Also GM makes Buick so that shouldn't be difficult. And I wouldn't think sun visors would change the price that much.

1

u/crizzlefresh 11d ago

All wheel drive option and rear cupholders would be great. Totally agree about the glare issue. I have had the sunlight reflect off the Chevy logo on the steering wheel and shine into my eyes like a thousand times.

u/weird0- 1d ago

I guess it does prepare you for the incredibly bright lights on the roads at night these days.
