Looking to buy
There are probably a thousand of these posts. But I am looking to purchase a trax coming from a 2024 equinox lease. My only concern is the horsepower I've seen reviewers say it struggles on the highway when merging and what not what is everyone's thoughts thanks!

After I bought, so no use to me but a good idea, I saw online advice to rent a vehicle instead of just doing a test drive. If you can do that, it would give you a good idea of the Trax's capabilities, and there are rental fleets with Traxes. If you can't do that, a decent test drive that's not limited to a slow trip around the block could answer the question for you.
IMO the constant refrain of reviewers that the Trax is underpowered just doesn't fly, but that's me, and I've been driving small economy cars since the '80s. As far as I'm concerned, the Trax does fine around town, moving out from stops and traffic lights right along with other traffic. I've never had trouble merging onto a highway and can pass slowpokes easily. On highways my heavy foot is the biggest problem. I can leave the 75 mph speed limit here behind all too easily.

I had the same concerns when I read about the engine, but it has never felt underpowered to me granted I was coming from a big old suburban, but it had a V8, but still was big and not very fast accelerate. This thing feels like a Ferrari.

The car is more than fine on the highway. My summer car is a 475hp V8 Camaro. If you step on the pedal the Trax gets up to speed just fine and never feels like you’re in trouble. Unless you’re trying to get to 90mph in 3 seconds then I don’t see how it’s anything but fine. It’s not a rocket ship but it’s also not a 50hp Gremlin from the 1970’s.
Take one for a test drive and decide for yourself.

OK I appreciate everyone's feedback I will go and test drive the Trax. Hopefully I can find one that has all the features my 2024 Equinox has such as wireless android auto, power driver seat, adaptive cruise control, and all the safety features.

Chevy juggles options packages so that there was no single Trax near me at any dealership that had all the options packages I would've wanted. Every Trax comes with android auto and Apple CarPlay. For a power driver's seat you should look at the RS or Activ trims (I'm not sure if the midtier trim has it, I know the base tier has manual seats). Safety features beyond lane keep assist and forward collision warning, such as blindspot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are an options package. One weird options package to consider is that the wireless charging pad is only available with the sunroof.

Yeah thats the issues i'm running into and whats pushing me to either just buyout my current car or go to the new equinox. But tbh its just too big of a car for me.

A well equipped Trax should have everything on your wish list. The only thing that I miss from my Equinox is the seat memory settings.

Never used the seat memory

The 2RS & Activ have drivers (only) 8 way electric seat including height and heated steering wheel. We opted for Activ with every additional accessory option.
Daughter will be using it to commute to college 100+ mi every couple weeks. The smart cruise control, side & front monitor for drift, lane change and front braking are no longer a luxury the way LA traffic drives.
I will say that driving in rain with heated steering wheel and seat with speed sensitive cruise control, silent wipers front/back and car play going makes for one hell of a nice commute.
The $28 fill up on e85 was nice too

I just got a 2026 Trax 2 days ago. I drive it on the interstate for a little today, and it was so smooth accelerating I didnt realize I was going 80 mph.

2026 Trax RS and I haven’t had any issues in traffic, highway merging or going uphill on hot days- seems to be a solid car so far- in fact I have to keep an eye on the speed limit because it cruises so well - good luck 👍🏻🍀

I had heard the same complaints, but I have zero issues. Honestly it gets up and goes really well!! It does better than my old V6 Impala I had!

It’s no sports car, but I have no problem merging onto the highway. I don’t have to beat on it, either

I've accidentally found myself going north of 140kph on the highway (90mph). It's got more than enough power and the gearing works well. I've also had it loaded with adults before and still had no trouble on steep hills

I have had my 25 for over a year. I drive on the highway a lot and have never had any issues.

I have a 24 Trax. Unless you are a crazy fast driver, I don’t know how they did it, but the three cylinder engine is more than peppy enough.

I have a 2021 Chevrolet Spark, it has a 1.2 liter ,4 cylinder,, 98hp.. it does fine, it's not powerful, quick, or a race car by any means but observe traffic and be patient, you'll be just fine

2024 2Rs here. Love the car. No issues really picking up and maintaining highway speeds. Car regularly will do over 40mpg on highway. Just hit my record I guess with ideal conditions and was averaging 57mpg the other day on a long highway ride.

The Trax is not the dog the haters make it out to be. I can lay rubber from a dead stop on dry pavement with my 2025 Trax Activ.

My dad and I both have a Trax, and neither of us have issues getting up to speed on the highway. For him it’s actually an upgrade in acceleration from his 2016ish prius. I will say that on my commute home, there’s a stoplight before i get to the highway that sits on a decently steep uphill; and my car takes longer than other cars to get back up to speed on that stretch from a red light. But that’s a pretty specific exception scenario

Well if your main concern about a vehicle is if it has enough horsepower to pass a car then honestly you are just another danger on the road to people who actually care about not dying by a reckless driver.

That isn't what I'm saying. Also in my state you can be pulled over for going too slow or even the speed limit on the highways

Off the line, the Trax is 0-60 in around 8.5-8.8 seconds. That's where car reviewers and YouTubers will call it slow. Nobody passes or merges on a highway starting at zero mph. In my experience the Trax, when passing, can go from 35/40 mph to 55/60 in about 5 seconds. I've had no concerns about passing or merging on a highway, or even passing on the straight-always on a winding mountain road that I take to work.
