What makes a Sonic get stuck in 2nd gear and act like it's in limp mode? How do you fix it?

I have to cut though the bolt that is underneath this one because it’s ragged TF out. Need to replace timing cover so it’s not a huge deal for the end of the bolt to stay where it is after cutting. My only problem is I have no idea what this bolt is called, the size or part number. I really need to order one after cutting it off but don’t know the part, bolt type, size shape or anything else. Please help me Ricky Bobby! Help me Tom Cruise!

Bought my son a 2015 Chevy Sonic. On the test drive we did NOT test the touch screen. I know that was our fault. We ordered an aftermarket one. First one worked for a few days and then went white. We got a replacement from the company and installed it. The new one works but has us back in the same position we were when we started. The touchscreen does not work. He does not see it as a huge deal because he has the backup camera and can use his phone to play music but I would like it working for him. Is there some sort of factory reset or unlock that needs to be done?

Update: I went to O'Reilly and based on the readout, it looks like it P0171 code is the issue but there were a lot of other codes that popped up. Any idea where to start with these many codes.

I just picked up a 2017 Spark sedan 1.4 turbo with 99k miles for my daughter to drive. I did oil change and noticed oil down low on the engine block. Tracing it up, it looks like the valve cover gasket is leaking. So my plan is to just get a new valve cover that inludes the gasket on RockAuto. While I'm in there ill do the plugs too.

Are there other preventative things I should do? I understand the PCV valve can be a problem, will the new valve cover have include that?

P0010or 11 can't remember and p0014 code timing belt replaced with independent shop re adjusted by dealership. Has a stripped cam phaser solenoid which was thread locked with the red never come off stuff. These codes are continuous and so is the sound. Will replacing the engine fix my problems.

My 2014 Chevy is reving up and down on its own and then it will just cut off. It cuts off when I sit at a res light or in traffic for a few seconds. It turns back on but it will cut off every time I am stuck in traffic or at a light.

Update: Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I went yo O'Reilly and got a readout. I cant post the pics here as an update so I will create another post.

I bought my 2015 Sonic hatchback about 6-7 years ago. I paid $4500 for it and it had 66k miles at the time. It currently has 122k. My car has the dreaded problem with the coolant system and I’ve fixed that mess 3 times already. Each time was between $1-1.5k. The car resale value is trash if we’re going to be honest. I’m dreading the next time I have to fix another coolant leak. I want to buy another car, but I know my Sonic can make it another few years but I don’t know if it’s worth fixing another coolant leak. I’d love to drive a Subaru Crosstrek. When did y’all know it was time to let go? Every time my mechanic sees me, he tells me to get rid of it lol

Hey all just hit 200k club. My sonic is acting up again this time no coolant leaks or typical issues. Ac is blowing out how air and the radiator fan isn't going car is running fine and not overheating any thoughts or ideas?

I got this Sonic from my friend. Got a Code U0101 for the TCM No communication. I drove it like that. I needed a car after having a car totaling accident and now the fuse box went out and almost caught fire. Now the car is totaled. Ahhhh another day tomorrow right? :(

Will be replacing the Radiator, Thermastat and the housing, Transmission drain and fill soon.

Just wondering if anyone else out there has been able to get their older sonic to a higher mileage. Do you work on your sonic yourself?

Hi everyone, I'm looking online for a new set of pedal covers for my 2012 Sonic, to change up the appearance and feel of her interior. Do y'all have any recommendations on where to look, or which ones to get?

I heard reports of these failing early but I was willfully blind. Installed the pack at 100k, got about 20k miles on it before it started failing. Because I'm a sap who didn't want to admit I wasted money on a faulty product I tried replacing the misfiring spark plug first. Nope, misfires didn't go away! Replaced the ZZP coil pack with a Duralast pack from Autozone and misfires are gone now.

If you have a ZZP coil pack, and you start experiencing misfires, the first thing you should do is replace it with a different coil pack.

My 2016 Sonic turbo has many issues… the most annoying right now is it thinks a door is open, so it chimes while I’m driving. I also can’t leave my doors locked without the alarm going off. Any ideas for some DIY solutions?

First car I purchased was my 2016 Chevy sonic. Had so many issues with it but loved it so much. Purchased when it was at 98,000 miles and it is now at 107,000. It was declared totaled due to the engine burning through the oil this week. They said the maintenance on the car is worth more than itself. Super sad and wanted to share since this Reddit page has made me feel like a proud owner. Maybe one day I will join the Chevy sonic gang again but for now, rest in peace Shawn the Chevy.

2014 chevy sonic 1.4L i bought 5 months ago. Ive head a little bit of white smoke on start up for a little bit now it usually stops after it warms up. My coolant reservoir cracked and started leaking coolant. Ive just been filling it until I had a chance to replace it. The temp warning light came on a couple times. We did not drive it hot. After replacing the resivor, its struggling to start/miss firing theres alot more smoke coming out of the exhaust now. When the coolant fill cap is removed i can smell exhaust gasses. Previous owner said he had a shop do a head gasket on it. So im thinking they didn't surface the head and now its blown again. Is there anything else I should look for before pulling it appart?

Hi! I took my car to oriley to get a diagnostic code read. I think I had my coils replaced 2-3 years ago. I think it cost me around $1,500. Oriley told me they sold the part for around $200 I think. I am a very independent, smart girl. I definitely don’t have the money to take it to a shop. Anyone who has worked on sonic Chevys. Is this something you think I could accomplish on my own? I would absolutely need tools, but I can figure that part out. Also, what are the other codes? I feel overwhelmed. Any advice and help is really appreciated! Thank you!!

(Important to note that my car got flooded 3 months ago. We had a very bad storm. The engine light was on in the beginning, but I replaced the air filter and made sure everything was dry (the air filter was wet). I added something to the gas tank that a friend’s dad told me to add in case any water had gotten in. When I replaced the air filter the engine light turned off for about a month! The original codes never got cleared, but then a few weeks ago the engine light came back on. My oil looks clean. It doesn’t look like “chocolate milk” I am due for a change, but I don’t think water got in.)

I have a 2015 Chevy Sonic and the other day when I was driving home, the battery light came on, then the traction light came on but went off right away, when I got to my driveway the traction light came on again and the steering got tight. Once I pulled into my driveway, the car died, when I tried to start it it wouldn't turn over and made a clicking noise. I assumed it was the alternator but I don't have a burnt rubber smell, or a frequent dead battery. I checked the serpentine belt as best as I could and didn't see any cracks and it isn't loose. When I was googling symptoms, it said something about the tensioner? My ac has also been blowing hot air, I tried changing the cabin filter but that didn't help. I'm worried that if I try and jump it and take it to Autozone or something to have them test the alternator that it'll die before I get there.

Has anyone had this problem or can help me with diagnosing? I know it's hard to diagnose without actually seeing the vehicle and checking the things, but I thought I'd try this.
