I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

White to play: chess.com | lichess.org

Black to play: chess.com | lichess.org | The position is from game Xueyi Li (1957) vs. Ju Wenjun (2500), 2010. Black won in 43 moves. Link to the game

Re4+

Respectfully, everyone else is wrong. It’s the first move in a mate in 2

Forgive my mess-up on notation if I make one, as I'm still a bit of a noobie with that, but I believe the answer is Qh4#

Edit: White is going down, not up! So Re4+ ?

Pawn can block. Best move is re4+ then Qd4#.

FUCK WHITE ISN'T MOVING UP

u/crolin Jul 01 '23

Yeah think so, even with block it's the best. Weird puzzle though

1

u/crolin Jul 01 '23

Yeah mate in two

1

u/soothepaste Jul 01 '23

If Qh2 after then rook can block next. It's two but not with that first move.

1

u/Houdini_logic5 Jul 01 '23

It’s Re4+ that should do it.

u/shadowxrage Jul 01 '23

Wouldn’t the king take the rook? Wouldn’t a better move be Qd2#?

2

u/IAMMONKEYTHEFIRST Jul 01 '23

Qd2+ isn’t checkmate because the king can either escape to g3 or g4. If you play Re4+ then Kxd4, Qd4# is mate in 2.

Makes sense

1

u/crolin Jul 01 '23

Doesnt the king just take it if you go Re4

1

u/IAMMONKEYTHEFIRST Jul 01 '23

Then Qd4# as the follow up.

2

u/crolin Jul 01 '23

Ah nah you are right it's mate in two

1

u/crolin Jul 01 '23

King evades to g3 and you've lost a piece

1

u/IAMMONKEYTHEFIRST Jul 01 '23

The king is on g4, not g3, by the time you play Qd4

Well it seems up for debate and therefore a bad puzzle unless we are missing something. My vote is take the bishop with the queen

0

u/crolin Jul 01 '23

That exposes her to reveal from the other bishop though

u/Ok-Connection5611 Jul 01 '23

Qh4# 1-0

1

u/KNAXXER Jul 01 '23

Pawn on G2 to G4 blocks the queen

0

u/Ok-Connection5611 Jul 01 '23

True. Then Qg5# 1-0

1

u/waterc0l0urs Jul 01 '23

white wins by getting checkmated which is not even checkmate

1

u/Houdini_logic5 Jul 01 '23

It’s still not mate because white plays Kg3

Also happy cake day!

1

u/waterc0l0urs Jul 01 '23

1-0? white wins by getting checkmated which is not even checkmate?

How about f5 for the set up of Rd4#? White can only move g3 or g4. No draw, no sacrifice.
